The Stone Angel | Margaret Laurence
post image

May‘s #roll100 is brought to you by #ALSpine partner recs. The tagged was on @vivastory ‘s list last year (miss you!) and Azadi was not on @Emilymdxn ‘s list, but her review a couple of years ago made me pick it up. Red Pill was a #tob pick I never read. May should be an exciting month!

monalyisha That‘s fun! 1mo

miamorswife Hi. Could someone please explain to me how the roll100 works, please 1mo

BarbaraBB The Margaret Laurence is fantastic 🩷 1mo
BarbaraBB I can‘t remember if I read Red Pill…. I think I did but it doesn‘t ring a bell 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it was a play in round pick during a year none of us were enthusiastic about the play in round. 🤷🏻‍♀️ v excited to read Margaret!! 1mo
Megabooks @miamorswife @PuddleJumper runs it. You make a list of 100 books you want to read. Then Jo rolls three dice sets each month and you try to read the books that correspond to those numbers on your list. It‘s a fun way to get through your TBR! I have 2 lists: one for audiobooks and another for print, which is why I have six books. (edited) 1mo
Megabooks @Singout so excited to read her!! 1mo
Megabooks @monalyisha you‘ve given me some really good matches!! 1mo
monalyisha @Megabooks You‘ve created some really good lists! Well-deserved. 😊 1mo

Well friends, I somewhat petered out on #ToB at the end.
Here‘s my rankings—top are favorites and the middle 2 rows I feel pretty good about in general, and the placement of those could move around at the drop of a hat/reading a judge‘s opinion! (With the exception of 2am —nope!)
The bottom row I didn‘t get finished. I was enjoying Volcano and made it halfway before the library loan was sucked back into Libby. I‘ll finish when I can. Bailed on 3.

Hooked_on_books Sounds like the book choices were pretty successful for you. That‘s great! 3mo
jlhammar Nice! Love seeing The Rabbit Hutch in your tops. I‘d also be happy if Sea and Violin do well. So excited for the tournament kick-off today! 3mo

BkClubCare I am “borrowing” your image! Hope that is okay 😳 3mo
sarahbarnes Yes! Rabbit Hutch is a top pick for me, too. 3mo
Ruthiella 2 AM is my last placed book and I also doubt any judge could make me budge! 😂 3mo
Cinfhen Funny, I didn‘t hate 2Am as much as I disliked some of the others @Ruthiella 3mo
Ruthiella @Cinfhen I didn‘t hate it, it bored me. 😂 3mo
Cinfhen Looks like 2am already got the boot @Ruthiella 🤣 3mo
squirrelbrain Great list! Your top ones are very similar to mine. 3mo

BkClubCare Thinking of you @Megabooks and hoping all is on a positive upswing for you and yours. TY again for this book - I really enjoyed it. ACTUALLY, it came all together for me when he chose what he deserved and got assigned to be a Helper!! 😂 3mo
Megabooks This was definitely an interesting one, and I was happy to get it to you!!! Maali was a thought-provoking character. Thank you so much for the support 💜, and CONGRATULATIONS on being a completist!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 (edited) 3mo

Dinosaurs: A Novel | Lydia Millet

I feel as though a lot of people are not giving this read the time it needs to get going. It is a very slow burn, but beautifully written. You really get to know the main character. #bookspin #tob @TheAromaofBooks

The Shards is taking the coveted favorite book of the month slot for February. I had a feeling this was going to be the case because I LOVED the book and the narration by BEE. March is going to be particularly difficult because I have a few TBRs that look amazing. #ToB #Februarypick #2down

Checkout 19: A Novel | Claire-Louise Bennett

Some parts I loved, some parts I skimmed. These are the notes of a girl growing up, discovering her creative self, becoming a writer. The writing is unique, I enjoyed how she writes about herself and about all those books she‘s read during her life. The stories she has written and shares in the book are less interesting. A light pick, a worthy contender of the #ToB longlist!

squirrelbrain Great review! 3mo

Sea of Tranquility: A Novel | Emily St. John Mandel
post image

Finished my 10th (and probably final) #tob23 book. I went in with low expectations (not sure why since I loved Station Eleven) & was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. A time travel book about a pandemic. Clearly Mandel had some fun with this. I enjoyed how all the pieces came together even if I'm unclear on the meaning. But there's no question that Mandel can write. There's a confidence to her prose that's reassuring. Pic of Obie who 👇

merelybookish who might be one of the featured TOB pets. (A new fundraising they are running. Each day of the tournament a reading companion is going to be profiled.) I'll be so proud! 😸 3mo
LeahBergen Go, Obie!! 3mo

Ruthiella How exciting that you have entered Obie as a contender! 😸 I like your review. I really enjoyed reading the book, even if I‘m not sure what it all meant. 3mo
sarahbarnes Yes I saw that! Rooting for Obie! And glad you liked the book - I did too. 3mo
Leftcoastzen Cool Obie! 3mo
Hooked_on_books I liked this one, too. And go Obie! 3mo
jlhammar I‘d love to see sweet Obie featured! I really liked this one as well. 3mo
Suet624 Yippee for Obie!! 3mo
Aimeesue I loved this one, and I love how Mandel has recurring characters in many of her books. I read this one and The Glass Hôtel back to back, which was neat. 3mo
BkClubCare @merelybookish - how fun!! (Do you have to come up with the cute commentary description of your pet?) 3mo
Megabooks Good luck Obie!! 🤩 3mo
BarbaraBB I‘d be definitely rooting for Obie! I was surprised I enjoyed this book as much as I did too! 3mo
batsy Rooting for Obie! 😸 I need to read Station Eleven! 3mo
Cinfhen Awww, Obie is too cute!!! This was a good book but my expectations were a bit too high. Agreed, Mandel is a clever gifted storyteller- I‘ll read whatever she writes!! 3mo
merelybookish @LeahBergen @Megabooks @Suet624 @Leftcoastzen Thanks! I will definitely share if he makes the cut! 😺 3mo
merelybookish @Ruthiella Thanks! If there was an overall message it eluded me but still enjoyed it! 🤷😅 3mo
merelybookish @sarahbarnes @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Interesting that so many of us like it and yet my perception was (is?) no one is very excited about it being in the #tob. 3mo
merelybookish @Aimeesue I haven't read The Glass Hotel but am more curious about it now. Fun that she has repeating characters! 3mo
merelybookish @BkClubCare I do! My kids have been helping me. My son is convinced Obie's favourite book is Moby Dick. 😁 3mo
merelybookish @batsy I really loved it when I read but have always worried it wouldn't stand up to scrutiny which may be why I have avoided her books since then. But I feel more confident now that she is the real deal. 3mo
merelybookish @Cinfhen Well said! You can trust she knows what she's doing! 3mo
BkClubCare @merelybookish - fun! I look forward to the spotlight on Obie. 3mo
BarbaraBB @merelybookish I really liked it a lot but I read it right after it was published so that is probably why I‘m not that excited to see it in the ToB but that‘s not the book‘s fault 😉 3mo
BkClubCare OBIE!!! 2mo
merelybookish @BkClubCare ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 2mo

Here‘s my own #tob list, in order of best to worst. That means that Seven Moons, at the bottom of my list of books that I actually read, is likely to win, just as it did the Booker! 🤣

Interestingly, whilst I loved my top 3 reads, I kind of felt that none of them were ‘different‘, ‘quirky‘ or ‘challenging‘ enough to have made the shortlist. I think that Nightcrawling, Rabbit Hutch and Volcano are the sort of books that should be on there.

Cinfhen Ohhh, I like that you ranked your books😍I really hope Seven Moons doesn‘t win, only because it already won an award 🤓 3mo
BarbaraBB Oooh so interesting! I have to read Seven Moons yet (or at least try to) and then I‘ll post mine too! 3mo
Hooked_on_books Seven Moons won‘t win, the Passenger will. 😜 I love that you loved The Violin Conspiracy. Me too! It was one of my favorites of 2022. I read it in the spring and it‘s still with me. Marvelous book. I have one left to go (Goose) and look forward to ranking my books after I finish that one, inspired by you! 3mo

Chelsea.Poole I have neglected Seven Moons and even managed to read the McCarthy ahead of it because I'm dreading it so lol...I like your rankings! I really liked Violin and Olga as well. 3mo
Ruthiella Nice! Is great to see them arrayed like that. I‘ll try to do the same when I‘m done, but I have 4 books still to read. 😅 (edited) 3mo
Megabooks Love the visuals and the explanation!! We agree on some and not others, but yes, Olga, Violin, and even Dinosaurs are very blah for the tob, especially when there were books like How High We Go… and Our Wives Under the Sea that didn‘t even make the longlist. Btw, I‘m still keeping an eye out for Grown Ups, but it hasn‘t arrived. Thanks for sending it!! 3mo
squirrelbrain So difficult to rank them @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella @Chelsea.Poole - I‘ve changed my mind several times already since posting, and will probably keep changing it! 3mo
squirrelbrain @Megabooks - I posted it only the day before Royal Mail announced the cyber attack that stopped all international outgoing mail for the last month (and is still ongoing). I would imagine it‘s right at the bottom of a big heap of parcels, although they are working through the backlog now apparently. (We still can‘t take new international parcels to the PO). 🙄 3mo
ashw21 Loved so many of these books..Violin Conspiracy and Tomorrow X3 were in my top 10 last year! Seven Moons was a 4-star read for me as were Babel, Nightcrawling, book of goose! 3mo
jlhammar So great to see your wrap-up! I‘m hoping to tackle a few more over the next couple of weeks. Can‘t wait to see what the ToB judges make of these. @Megabooks Yes! I was kind of surprised that How High and Our Wives weren‘t chosen as they seem like exactly the kinds of books they might have gravitated towards in the past. Definitely kind of a strange ToB year. 3mo
Librarybelle Awesome! Love to see your overall ranking! 3mo
Suet624 Love this! 3mo
batsy Fun! I have something like personal beef with Seven Moons, so I'm hoping it doesn't win 😅 3mo
squirrelbrain @ashw21 - you‘ve read so many! Are you joining in with our own Tournament of Books here on Litsy? We all vote on the brackets and see how our choices compare with the actual ToB judges. Tagging @BarbaraBB as she is our wonderful host! 3mo
BarbaraBB Thanks for the tag Helen! You‘re very welcome to join us @ashw21 ! 3mo
ashw21 @squirrelbrain thank you so much .. would love to.. I am very new to Litsy so still learning !! 3mo
ashw21 @BarbaraBB thank you so much! So lovely to be part of this wonderful community.. I am very new to Litsy so still learning .. thank you will try and join 3mo

BarbaraBB @ashw21 I‘ll tag you in upcoming posts about #tob23b 3mo
Larkken Interesting wrap up! I am not sure I‘ll be able to finish them all in time, myself. I‘ll have to compare my list to yours when I get there though! 3mo

I decided against reading this when it first came out after seeing tepid reviews, so I wasn‘t excited when it popped up on the #tob2023. But, turns out, I really liked it! Some parts were a bit heavy handed and others could have been explored more thoroughly, but overall it was a satisfying story with the heft and messiness of real life.

#ReadingAmericas2023 #PuertoRico

Chelsea.Poole I agree! I passed it up when it first came out too but ended up really enjoying it for tob. 3mo
squirrelbrain I really liked this one too, and I agree with your review. There were some unnecessary plot lines and some of it was a bit ‘in your face‘ but it‘ll be quite high up on my list. 3mo
Soubhiville I saw the author speak at TX Bookfest and bought the book. Still haven‘t read it but looking forward to it! 3mo

Librarybelle I too have seen tepid and mixed reviews on this one, but seeing other reviews from the #tob readers here makes me want to reconsider this one. I love the vibrancy of the cover! 3mo
Ruthiella I felt that the weaker aspects were outweighed by the positive points. I liked Olga and Prieto, as imperfect as they were. 3mo
BarbaraBB I was pleasantly surprised by this book too! 3mo
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville I‘m guessing she was fabulous, since you bought the book. I love that! I‘m looking forward to whatever she happens to do next. 3mo
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle isn‘t that cover great? I actually didn‘t really see all the detail in it until another TOBer did an extreme close up in their review, and I love it. 3mo
Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella I liked their relationship. I felt it was emblematic of a brother/sister relationship in so many ways. So many things in this book felt real, and that really worked for me. 3mo
Megabooks I‘m glad you enjoyed it! 3mo
