All This Could Be Yours | Jami Attenberg
post image

Family dysfunctional dynamics at its finest. Attenberg crisply depicts her characters with raw realism. I love her writing style. It‘s interesting that this book takes place during the 24 hours after the family‘s patriarch is struck down by a heart attack. In that short time, each family member is well drawn out and many family questions are answered.

BarbaraBB Now that this one has been longlisted for the #ToB I want to read it soon too. Great review! 20h
TheBookStacker I just finished it and it might be my favorite book I‘ve read all year. 19h

🎉NEW BOOK DAY🎉 The world of publishing has begun to wind down for the holidays, but there are still a few great new releases on the way. There are a few more out today that I am excited about, including The Queen of Nothing (The Folk of the Air) by Holly Black, Mary Toft; or, The Rabbit Queen by Dexter Palmer, and Snow: A Scientific and Cultural Exploration by Giles Whittell. What are you excited to read? 📚❤️📚

merelybookish Mary Toft made it to the #tob long list. It looks intriguing! 1d

These are the six I hadn‘t read/looked into already that I liked on the #Toblonglist. I was surprised/happy to see Nothing to See Here on the list. That was a real sleeper hit with me.

I checked out the tagged book from my library. I was honestly surprised they had it. Thanks for the tag @merelybookish 👍🏻📚😁

#tournamentofbooks #tob

Are you judging this year @L_auren ?

readordierachel I started and abandoned Oval. It left me a little cold. 2d
merelybookish I also checked out what was available and was pleased to find at least 10 titles. I downloaded the audio of 2d
Megabooks @readordierachel Thanks for the heads up! Some of these definitely sound different. 2d

Megabooks @merelybookish Jami is usually a buy for me so I‘m waiting for Christmas gift cards to buy hers in hardcover. What do you think of it? 2d
BarbaraBB Another great post! Some of these six caught my eye too. I made a promise not to but any more books this year.. so I‘ll wait for the shortlist, I hope! 2d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB Thanks 😊 Yes! The long list is really long! I‘m going to see what my library has until the shortlist comes out. 2d

Oh #luckystar, it's here! 💫🤩💖And I have some reading to do!! #tob
@cinfhen #MOvember
@reggie @BarbaraBB @thebluestocking @Ruthiella @batsy @mklong @zelma @BkClubCare

merelybookish Initial observation. A lot of short story collections! 2d
mklong I am looking forward to spending some time with the list tonight. There are several on that are new to me, and while I love rooting for my favorites, it‘s finding those new gems that is my favorite part of this comp. (edited) 2d
See All 26 Comments
merelybookish @mklong Agreed! And as usual I haven't read that many on the list! 2d
Cinfhen Waiting to hear what @BarbaraBB thinks!!! Lots of short stories and a few NEVER heard of titles. Happy to see 2d
BarbaraBB I‘ve only read three any have another four on my shelves! Of many I‘ve never even heard. And many short stories indeed. But I‘ve already noticed some I am going to stack! Love it! 2d
Ruthiella I‘ve only read 5 of the 60+. I just put Ducks, Newburyport on hold at the library. I have a feeling it will make the shortlist plus I am super curious about it myself!😀 2d
merelybookish @Cinfhen That's been on my TBR for a while! 2d
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I've read 8. And don't plan to read The Testaments or the Marlon James. But that leaves plenty of options! 2d
merelybookish @Ruthiella I ordered it from the library a while ago but was in no mood to tackle it once it showed up! 🤣 But I might give it another go, maybe over the Xmas holidays. I agree that it seems short-list material. 2d
BarbaraBB What do you think @Cinfhen ? (edited) 2d
BarbaraBB @merelybookish Eight, that‘s good! I am going to read the ones I own and then wait for the shortlist before buying any new books 😉 2d
Emilymdxn Im on 11 plus I‘m currently half way through listening to the water dancer! I‘d love to read all of them cause I love reading lists and comparing them with people but holy budget batman. Home remedies and we cast a shadow are on my library ebook service so I‘ll definitely be able to read those and should be able to track down a couple of others! 2d
merelybookish @Emilymdxn I think I can access most of them through the library but there's always a few obscure titles that are elusive. 2d
Emilymdxn @merelybookish because of my work hours I can almost never get to the library physically, I use library ebooks and audiobooks a lot but that limits my choice a lot more than reading paper books :( 2d
LauraJ That‘s a long list! I‘ve only read two so far. 2d
batsy Haha, well played! And thank you for sharing, going to peruse the list in detail 🧐 2d
Redwritinghood I can‘t believe it‘s out already! It seems like we just finished last year‘s. 2d
Cinfhen I‘ve read 12 @BarbaraBB @merelybookish of the 12 I‘d only like to see 3 continue On Earth, Girl/Woman and Childrens Archive. I own 5 more ( but not sure if I‘ll read MJ or Ducks yet) but will try to get to the other 3: Nickel Boys, Trust Exorcise, Golden State. There are a few I wanted to read regardless but I‘m not planning on buying books just from this long list. BTW: How gorgeous are those field notebooks featuring the National Parks?!?! 1d
BarbaraBB Wow, 12!! I was checking out the reviews of the books and had noticed how many you read but 12 is incredible! On Earth and the Children are faves of mine too. I have a copy of girl/woman and am looking forward to it. I am looking forward to True Exercise and Golden State too, among others. I have stacked many more but am trying to buy no more books this year 🙀 @Cinfhen (edited) 1d
batsy So that list is really interesting. I've read one so far 🤣 I'm worried about all of us who haven't read Ducks... How will we have time for the rest of the books 😅🦆 1d
Zelma I haven‘t read any of them yet, but that‘s not unusual. I love the ToB even when I haven‘t read anything on it. I am just here for the commentary. 🥰 1d
Zelma Slightly disappointed The Testments is on the list but not surprised. I like seeing more obscure titles so I hope it stays off the short list. 1d
merelybookish @Cinfhen That is impressive and makes me want to read Girl, Woman, Other even more. (As opposed to The Testaments..😒) And yes, those field notes are goegeous! 14h
merelybookish @batsy Ducks is a beast! But I'm trapped errr staying with family on a remote island over Xmas. A gigantic book might fit the bill! 14h
merelybookish @Zelma I agree! The commentaries are so nuanced that you don't need to have read the books to appreciate the conversation. 14h

So Much Blue: A Novel | Percival Everett
post image

Kevin Pace, a 56-year-old painter, works on an enormous canvas that he will permit no one, not even his wife or his best friend, to see. The painting is dominated by #TrueBlue, a color with which Kevin is not comfortable and which he hardly ever used. “I could never control it,” he says. “Regardless that blue was so likable, a color that so many loved or liked — no one hated blue — I could not use it.”

I loved this book. #MOvember

Cinfhen I love that passage. Super intrigued 3d
squirrelbrain Sounds great - stacked! 3d
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain I can definitely recommend this book! 3d

batsy Loved this too 💙 3d
lele1432 I'm so glad to see someone else post about him! I love what I've read from him so far. I've got to read this book! 3d
BarbaraBB @lele1432 This is the only book I read by him but I‘d love to read more. Any suggestions where to start? 3d
lele1432 I have this tagged collection of short stories. I haven't read through them all because I wanted to really savor each one so I set it down when things got too busy. I need to pick it back up! A piece in it titled "The Appropriation of Cultures" is the most perfect piece of satire. 3d
BarbaraBB @lele1432 Great, thanks, I‘ll look it up! 3d
merelybookish Yes! One of those authors I never would have read if not for #tob! 3d
BarbaraBB @merelybookish That goes for me too! I am so looking forward to Tuesday!! 3d

BkClubCare So, do we know when Super Rooster is going to be? 1w
thebluestocking I cannot wait!!!! 💙💙 1w
merelybookish @BkClubCare I don't know! What is the super rooster? 1w
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Thank you! I couldn't remember all the #tobers on her. 1w
merelybookish @Emilymdxn Yes,.it's always a great list of popular, obscure, and in-between! 1w
BarbaraBB @merelybookish the Super Rooster is a bonus ToB composed of all 16 previous winners. It will take place after the regular ToB I read somewhere @BkClubCare 💕 1w
Reggie Me too!!!! 1w
Zelma I can‘t wait for Super Rooster! 😃😍 1w
merelybookish @BarbaraBB @zelma Wow! That is exciting!! (Early prediction. Cloud Atlas wins it all! 😉) 1w
BarbaraBB That‘s quite a prediction! I have to check out who those 16 were!! But I did love Cloud Atlas 😀 7d
Zelma @merelybookish @BarbaraBB I think I am going with a sleeper. Fever Dream to won and shocks everyone. 7d
BkClubCare @merelybookish - I have 3 yet to read (and revisit a few that I DNF‘d) for #SuperRooster. I have no predictions but I will be such fun! I think my favorite is The Good Lord Bird but I have many favorites. Might have to reread Cloud Atlas. 6d

Voting for the #GoodreadsChoiceAwards is open now. I‘m disappointed again by the nominated books. They are so middle of the road, so predictable and uninspired. I know it‘s based on added and reviewed books on the platform itself, so I shouldn‘t be surprised, yet I do think these Awards do add nothing to what we already know without voting. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Kalalalatja I feel you. I haven‘t even looked at the nominated books yet, and I already know, I won‘t be surprised.. 2w
Cinfhen I agree; these awards are usually uninspiring!!! I haven‘t looked but I guarantee Testaments and Crawdad‘s are going to win 🙄 2w
Cinfhen I guess Crawdad‘s was on the list last year🤷🏼‍♀️did it win??? 2w
See All 25 Comments
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen It must have been on the list last year, it‘s one of those predictable nominees indeed. Give me the #ToB longlist over this one any time! 💕 (edited) 2w
LeahBergen These lists are always so “meh” for me, too. 😐 2w
Reggie What‘s a book you would like to see win some award? 2w
BarbaraBB @Reggie I‘m not sure if they were all published in this timeframe but I loved 2w
BarbaraBB To name a few! 2w
Reggie I haven‘t read any of them, booooo, I‘ll have to change that. 2w
Birdsong28 You can add your own suggestion 2w
batsy Agreed! Because it's based on GR data it'll inevitably be the most hyped books that end up there. 2w
Ms_T Litsy should do a Best Books of 2019, the list would contain a much greater variety of literature. 2w
Amiable I agree. I‘m usually uninspired by the choices. 2w
BarbaraBB @Ms_T Litsy does! I think it‘s organized by @LibrarianRyan (edited) 2w
LibrarianRyan @BarbaraBB @Ms_T yep. Nominations for the #LitsyAwards will start Dec 1. I have the form ready and everything. Click through the hashtag to see the last two years worth of awards. 2w
Ms_T @LibrarianRyan @BarbaraBB Great, I‘ll check it out! 2w
MicheleinPhilly I completely agree. These “awards” are just silly. I have this list bookmarked as they update it every month. It‘s fantastic: https://www.realsimple.com/work-life/entertainment/best-books-2019 2w
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly Wow, that is a fantastic site. I know what I‘m gonna go tonight 😎😜 2w
lele1432 Yeah, I'm writing in a YA book I'm almost finished with that's not listed sadly, due to not enough hype, but it's fantastic! I'm excited for the #LitsyAwards! 2w
BarbaraBB @lele1432 That one sounds good! I do have a weak spot for everything related to Haïti ?? 2w
BarbaraBB @LibrarianRyan Thanks! Looking forward to it! 2w
lele1432 I thought it was so good! I hadn't read anything related to Haiti before. 😊 2w

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this surprise of a novella. The story pans around a family during a big day in the life of their granddaughter and tells how they all came to be where they are. The writing was gorgeous and built to something small but significant.

ManyWordsLater I‘m reading this now! SO GOOD! 1mo
thebluestocking @ManyWordsLater Right? Love the writing. 💙 1mo
BarbaraBB Stacking! Just read @cinfhen ‘s review too. Equally enthusiastic! 1mo

thebluestocking @BarbaraBB I really hope you enjoy it. And I hope it catches the attention of the ToB selectors. 💙 3w
Cinfhen Oh yes!!!! Definitely a contender for #ToB #ReadARooster 3w

This wasn‘t an “easy” book to read, but I had to give it 5* for the impression it made and the length of time I suspect it will stay with me. #ToB

Cathythoughts That‘s a good 5 🌟 rating ...I like your reasons 1mo
rmaclean4 This book has really stuck with me! Great review. 1mo
Readerann @Cathythoughts @rmaclean4 Thanks. I don‘t give many books 5* ratings, but it‘s usually the ones I keep thinking about. This book was fiction, but we all know what‘s happening. I just want to DO something. 😢 1mo
rmaclean4 @Readerann I have had the same response. I have been looking into so volunteer opportunities because of this book ...and what is happening in our world. 1mo
