Day 11 - #KeenKarma #LadderToTheSky #JohnBoyne #AugustABC

Karma gets him in the end:
Maurice has had a taste of literary fame, he knows he can stop at nothing in pursuit of that high. From the Amalfi Coast, where he matches wits with Gore Vidal, to Manhattan & London, Maurice hones his talent for deceit & manipulation, preying on the talented & vulnerable in his cold-blooded climb to the top. But the higher he climbs, the further he has to fall…

1. John Boyne is just SO good
2. Barbie, of course. (Don‘t even try it now though!)
3. Depends on the cuisine - fried calamari came to mind first
4. Work tomorrow and genealogical research Sunday
5. Three passably and I‘ll attempt whatever someone wants to teach me

#friyayintro @howjessreads

Lcsmcat I didn‘t know you did genealogy! So do I. We‘ll have to see if we‘re connected. 😀 2w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lcsmcat I‘ve been lazy about it for a long while. But now I have a bug up my butt again. Wouldn‘t it be wild if we were related?!?! 2w
Lcsmcat @BarbaraTheBibliophage I tend to do it in spurts too. Right now I‘m trying to find the mother of an ancestor who was born out of wedlock. Strangely I know his father, but even he didn‘t seem to know who his mother was. 2w
See All 8 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lcsmcat Wow. That‘s a challenge. I‘m working on hard documentation of a couple of generations on my dad‘s side. We thought we knew when my grandfather was born. But I can‘t find an actual birth certificate. So I‘m going to the Maryland archives week after next. Luckily it‘s just 2.5 hrs away. While I‘m there, I hope to also get my grandfather‘s death certificate. 2w
Lcsmcat @BarbaraTheBibliophage Good luck! If you can‘t find a birth certificate maybe you can find a christening record. 2w
Amiable I also do genealogy research—it‘s addictive once you get started, isn‘t it? A few months ago my husband, son and I took a heritage trip to Sweden to track down the sites where my great-grandparents and my husband‘s great-great-grandparents were born and raised. It was an amazing experience. 2w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amiable Oh I‘m envious! That sounds amazing! 🇸🇪 2w

I am wary of novels about writers and writing but this one was funny in a dark way and I found it hard to put down. I didn‘t like Maurice but kinda sympathize with loving language and stories yet not having one to write. He was completely amoral and it was fascinating to see what lengths he would go to get a story idea. And I felt bad for his poor victims. And I want to check out more Gore Vidal novels.

After reading just 2 of his books, Boyne is one of my favorite authors. He has no trouble telling a good story. Imagine Boyne sitting around one day saying, “What‘s the worst thing a writer could do? Right. Steal other people‘s stories! Let‘s play around with that and see what happens.” Reading Ladder is enjoying the fruits of that labor. 4.5 enthusiastic stars

A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne is a Five star read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the most diabolical villains in literature EVER. I‘m just SICK about how all this went down. You‘ve got to pick this book up ASAP! It‘s disgustingly fantastic. 😈
Synopsis is in the comments.⚠️

BookBumming Synopsis;
Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for success. The one thing he doesn't have is talent - but he's not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don't need to be his own.
Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann.
2mo
BookBumming He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war. Perfect material for Maurice's first novel.
Once Maurice has had a taste of literary fame, he knows he can stop at nothing in pursuit of that high.
2mo
BookBumming Moving from the Amalfi Coast, where he matches wits with Gore Vidal, to Manhattan and London, Maurice hones his talent for deceit and manipulation, preying on the talented and vulnerable in his cold-blooded climb to the top. But the higher he climbs, the further he has to fall.. 2mo

I thought since June is “Pride Month🏳️‍🌈” I would read a book featuring some gay main characters. The author John Boyne also wrote The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas which makes this read feel promising. The main reason this book caught my interest was the fact that the central character is not truly a protagonist of this story but mostly the antagonist. explanation in the comments. ⚠️

BookBumming Maurice, a fame hungry aspiring writer but essentially a talentless young man, finds a way to climb to the top of the literary world using a A 66 year old virgin novelist, who grew up in Berlin during the rise of Hitler, even wearing a swastika armband along with his friends as a teen and working as a clerk in one of the army headquarter buildings during the war. 2mo
BookBumming I‘m curious to see how this plays out and if Maurice is able to attain AND maintain the notoriety he is desperately seeking.

My “bachelorette week” without Mr. B is coming to a close. So I‘m shifting back to longer books. (And writing a LOT of book reviews!) I finished 5 books (3 under 200 pgs), and 4 short audiobooks and Audible Originals.

This one is finally on Scribd so I‘m going to give a go. I know a lot of you thought the MC was nasty. But...John Boyne...and I can finally finish the #irishauthor prompt for #booked2019!

He is very generous. I only give a writer about 50 pages before I decide if I‘m going to keep reading the book.

suvata @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @twohectobooks I usually give it a 1-star rating on Goodreads and make a notation that I didn‘t finish it. That way, I won‘t accidentally read it again. There have also been times when I gave it another chance after reading others thoughts on it. 5mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's fair, and to each their own. All just personal preferences. I totally get not wanting to waste time on a book you're not feeling. So many book so little time!! 5mo
SharonAlger I stick it out until the end, if I can, because I learn so much about writing, when I do this. Otherwise, if it weren‘t for my writing, I‘d bail a long time before 100 pages. 5mo
laurenslibrary I give it somewhere between 50 and 100 pages, depending on how bad/annoying it is. 5mo
suvata @laurenslibrary 👌🏻 5mo
suvata @SharonAlger So, it looks like about half of the people stick it out till the end and the other half will bail If they are not in joying it. (edited) 5mo

4.5/5👏🏻. Boyne never fails to entice the reader and produce a wonderful story. From the first section you are hooked and invested in the characters (even if it is a deep hatred). Each section uses a unique voice and dialogue flow. I also loved the small reference to his previous adult release The Hearts Invisible Furies🥰. Did anyone else catch that? Definitely read!

3.5⭐️ Boyne does a great job at painting a character and writing dialogue. The plot is often a little too coincidental, though. While I loved ‘The Heart‘s Invisible Furies‘, which suffered from similar issues, the lack of insight into the character Maurice Swift in this book made the coincidences less tolerable. Swift‘s motivations seemed very superficial and I think could have been explored more. Overall, though, I enjoyed reading this.

Redheadrambles Glad you enjoyed this one Jerrie. I think overall I liked it better than The Italian Teacher but still that‘s not saying too much ! 5mo
Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles Yes, better than The Italian Teacher, but neither of those would make my ‘best of‘ list. 5mo

#wontgetfooledagain | Actually, people will get fooled. That Maurice is diabolical. I loved this book. So darkly humorous.

BlameJennyJane I really need to read this! NetGalley was kind enough to give me an arc of it and I was intimidated by the size and wanted to really focus on it. The universe keeps sending me signs to read it already! 6mo
