Cover Story: A Novel | Susan Rigetti

Catch Me If You Can meets Sweetbitter in this debut novel about an ambitious young woman who gets caught up in a charismatic con artists scam. Its grifter season in New York City and no one is safe. After a rough year at NYU, aspiring writer Lora Ricci is thrilled to land a summer internship at ELLE magazine where she meets Cat Wolff, contributing editor and enigmatic daughter of a clean-energy mogul. Cat takes Lora under her wing, soliciting her help with side projects and encouraging her writing. As a friendship emerges between the two women, Lora opens up to Cat about her desperate struggles and lost scholarship. Cats solution: Drop out of NYU and become her ghostwriter. Lora agrees and, when the internship ends, she moves into Cats suite at the opulent Plaza Hotel. Writing during the day and accompanying Cat to extravagant parties at night, Loras life quickly shifts from looming nightmare to dream-come-true. But as Lora is drawn into Cats glamorous lifestyle, Cats perfect exterior cracks, exposing an illicit, shady world. A whip-smart and delightfully inventive writer, Susan Rigetti brilliantly pieces together a perceptive, humorous caper full of sharp observations about scam culture. Composed of diary entries, emails, FBI correspondence, and more, Cover Story is a fresh, fun, and wholly original novel that takes readers deep into the codependency and deceit found in a relationship built on power imbalance and lies.

Love the format and twists of this story of a con artist. Great summer read! Rigetti makes a great story teller.

COVER STORY by Susan Rigetti is a book of mysterious schemes, the writing is fairly simple and the pages read quickly (due to the format...like half-page emails) I found it a little boring but, it had a nice twist at the end. If you're a fan of con-artist story, add this one to your bookshelf.

Mixed feelings on this one. It's a great binge read and a fun ride! But felt perhaps too much borrowed from Anna Delvey?? I definitely didn't see the ending coming but in thinking back on it afterwards, it was foreshadowed in so many ways. So overall, I give it a pick!

I heard someone rave about this one on a podcast of 2022 wrap up (not sure which one), so I thought I‘d give it a try. It was fun (though doesn‘t lend well to the audio format due to multiple visual elements) and then the end arrived. It changes the book entirely and didn‘t work at all for me. I felt it made the entire thing completely ridiculous. I‘m so glad I didn‘t buy this!

This was a lot of fun. Anyone else read their books at 1.55 speed? I got used to it really fast. But it was a bit odd for this one with so many emails and texts. Lots of fun though!

thebacklistbook It depends on the narrator. Most I listen to at 1.25 but for Lauren Graham I had to use 1.5 1y

I picked this one up as it‘s one of the #Timemagazinetop100readsof2022 and I‘m doing this reading challenge this year. I wouldn‘t have picked this one up on my own and that would‘ve been a loss on my part. It was a smart, funny and sassy read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I highly recommend reading this one WITHOUT reading the back, or any reviews that might have spoilers. I would liken it to The Devil Wears Prada meets Anna Sorokin.

Okay, so hear me out... I really liked this one in the beginning but the more I read it, the more I felt like I had read it before. Then it hit me: My Friend Anna. Once that got in my head, I felt like the surprise of Cat's identity was spoiled. Although there are glaring differences, specifically the ending, the book lost its luster when I couldn't shake the deja vu feeling. 🫤 ⭐⭐⭐ I know art imitates life or whatever but this was too close.

This wasn‘t even on my radar until I kept seeing it on Bookstagram. This is the kind of story that you need to go into blind…the less you know the better. It was really quite fun, and rather cleverly crafted. All in all, you‘ll have some WTF moments that will leave you confused…but go with it because it‘ll get there in the end.

🎙️Carlotta Brentan 📣She was fantastic at bringing this story to life, she also had some decent accents when needed.

So many sources said the ending of this was unforgettable (for better or for worse…) that I felt bookish peer-pressured to read it! And to continue reading it, because it didn‘t really grab me from the start and felt a little unoriginal…but that‘s probably because I had watched Inventing Anna not long ago. It did grow on me a bit. I hesitate to comment on the ending for spoilery reasons! Narrowly a pick for me. (Still very fond of the cover! 😎💙)

This is truly ripped from the headlines almost too closely. I found parts of this book so obviously taken from the Anna Delvey case, yet I couldn‘t stop listening. It was super short with a clever ending so a soft pick #BorrowNotBuy #Scribd

thereadingpal @Cinfhen oooh nice. I'm in a non-Jewish home so I won't do that unfortunately but I'd love to. Meanwhile I'm reading a biography of a convert to Conservative Judaism. I'm converting to Reform, but it's still very interesting to see similar experiences 2y

I picked this book up to help get me out of a reading slump and it did. I read it in a day, not necessarily because I couldn‘t put it down but because it was a quick, simple read. It reads like a fan-fiction of Netflix‘s Inventing Anna. If you want a quick, simple read this is the one for you but I wouldn‘t rush to it.

I guess #ConArtistLit is having a moment. 🤷‍♀️ I kept marveling at Lora's naivete and wondering what she would do when the rug was pulled out from under her, then- that ending! I didn't actually like the way it ended but I was definitely surprised. This was entertaining, I'll give it that but IMO it's a #BorrowNotBuy

Perhaps it will be clearer later but I think it's kind of weird that social media posts from this minor character are sprinkled throughout this book. Esp since they're blank. Maybe it's because I spend too much time scrolling Instagram but every time I come across one of these it feels like an error and pulls me out of the story.

Told through diary entries, emails, texts, articles, and memos, this book tells a story that is ripped from the headlines about Anna Sorokin (Inventing Anna & My Friend Anna fame) but publishing and fashion industries. Who doesn't love reading about a con artist - and in fiction there is the extra perk that you can have all the answers and twists that the real life story isn't as quick to provide.
I couldn't put this down, and the ending was !!

Caroline2 Oh thanks for the heads up. I do love a good con story. 😆 2y

I haven‘t felt particularly compelled to write this review, which says something. I liked the fun epistolary format, but the plot was just okay, and the ending pissed me off. Truly a so-so.

Lora is excited to start her internship at Elle, even though she doesn‘t quite fit into the fashion scene. When Cat Wolff, a wealthy heiress editor, takes an interest in Lora, she may be in over her head. A riff on the Anna Delvey story.

KristiAhlers I was going to say it sounded a bit like The Devil Wears Prada. 2y
Megabooks @KristiAhlers yes, I can see that, and Lora references Andie‘s experiences in one of her diary her diary entries. 2y

Picture of the book where it landed when I threw it across the room! Is there going to be a sequel because I hate open ended novels?? If you‘ve read it please discuss the ending in spoilers.

*no actual books (or dogs) were harmed in the writing of this post

+I love our new landscaping!

Megabooks Is Lora a fabrication or is the letter from her parents faked? If so, is Lora another Cat alias or accomplice? Did Cat kill Lora (or Vice versa)? 2y

Megabooks @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain I‘ve read a few that end open this year. I kind of felt the same way about this book a few years ago and it ended up being a series, so we‘ll see. I hate the limbo of not knowing whether the story will continue or not. (edited) 2y
