The Essex Serpent
The Essex Serpent | Sarah Perry
Set in Victorian London and an Essex village in the 1890's, and enlivened by the debates on scientific and medical discovery which defined the era, The Essex Serpent has at its heart the story of two extraordinary people who fall for each other, but not in the usual way. They are Cora Seaborne and Will Ransome. Cora is a well-to-do London widow who moves to the Essex parish of Aldwinter, and Will is the local vicar. They meet as their village is engulfed by rumours that the mythical Essex Serpent, once said to roam the marshes claiming human lives, has returned. Cora, a keen amateur naturalist is enthralled, convinced the beast may be a real undiscovered species. But Will sees his parishioners' agitation as a moral panic, a deviation from true faith. Although they can agree on absolutely nothing, as the seasons turn around them in this quiet corner of England, they find themselves inexorably drawn together and torn apart. Told with exquisite grace and intelligence, this novel is most of all a celebration of love, and the many different guises it can take.

Freed from the confines of an abusive marriage, Cora moves to the countryside in search of fossils, and hears of the legendary Essex serpent. Her magnetic presence and flouting of convention make waves in the village as she strikes up an unlikely friendship with the local reverend. I can see why they made a show based on this book--great characters and an intriguing plot.

Ok, I may seem a little obsessed with this (I am) but I would love to know others opinions on book/ TV adaptation. It's on Apple TV and I've just finished. I'm so divided ... would highly recommend though 💛👍

I have meant to get to this one for a while. It is well written with well formed characters confronting science and religion and gender roles of the era not to mention class. I think it plodded on a bit but still I‘m glad I read it. Now time to watch the limited series with Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston.

I wanted to listen to this book before watching the Apple TV show. I hate to do it but this just isn‘t keeping my interest at the moment. From the show trailer I assumed this was more of a mystery/thriller but it‘s very slow. I made it about halfway through and it‘s just so dry. I‘ll try to pick it up again at a later date but I think I‘ll still give the show a try.

Sparklemn I made it maybe 5% through before I lost my patience with the narrator on the audio version. She would go back and forth between shouting and a quiet and mild voice. I had to turn it up so loud in my car to hear the quiet that the shouts would startle me. #librofm actually refunded my money. Lesson learned - listen to the sample before purchase! I'll give the e-book version a try sometime. 5mo

Palimpsest @ErikasMindfulShelf I think so. I really enjoyed the book, but I also love all things Victorian and books that were written in that time period and about it are some of my favorites so I‘m a bit biased! It has a lot of thought provoking elements that work such as thinking about religion, superstition, and science, as well as new practices in medicine and also class divisions and naturalism that was popular at this time as a hobby. 7mo

I am happy to report that the book I purchased mainly for the pretty cover (checks Goodreads) fully FIVE years ago has made the cut: it‘s good enough it will stay on my forever shelf and not be donated.

I do love historical fiction with alternating POVs and this one is written so beautifully. I loved the story, I loved that Perry is doing a lot of different things with it, and I absolutely adored every single character.

Okay okay. So I might have complained a bit in my review of this book a few years ago that I thought the book took on too many different ideas because I liked the religion and science part, but it became more of a social novel towards the end, but I still overall thought it was great. Anyway, the trailer has been released for Apple TV and it looks good! Too bad I don‘t have Apple TV, ha! https://youtu.be/A5GqOeELRFU

AmyG I just read this and enjoyed it. I don‘t have Apple Tv either. 😢 7mo
Ddzmini So I have Apple TV because I don‘t have cable (it‘s cheaper) so I‘m adding it to my viewing list 🤗📖 and I‘ll have to get the book to read before watching 🤨📖 7mo

Palimpsest @Ddzmini Absolutely agree about the actors! I‘m going to have to watch this I think! 😄 7mo
Palimpsest @vivastory I forgot Macbeth is on Apple. I did see it and thought it was amazing. I keyed in on the German Expressionism cinema effects which I loved and I loved Denzel‘s performance as well as the witches. Well, all of it!I forgot that I want to watch Coda. Thanks! This adaptation looks a little different, but I love films almost as much as books and especially love to watch book adaptations! Hey, whatever happened with The Master and Margarita? 7mo
Palimpsest @AmyG Glad you enjoyed the novel! I love Victorian historical fiction novels and this one definitely is among my favorites. 7mo
vivastory I have heard great things about the MacBeth adaptation. My expectations are high since it is my favorite of Shakespeare's plays & so far the Patrick Stewart version is my favorite. A couple of weeks ago my cousin, who has watched the Stewart adaptation, told me that he thinks the one with Denzel has equal strengths. So I'm def. intrigued. I would like to see Master & Margarita adapted, but honestly I would def like to see someone else than (edited) 7mo
vivastory Luhrman bring it to life. I'm not a big fan of his work. 7mo
Palimpsest @vivastory I‘m embarrassed that I haven‘t seen the Stewart adaptation, only the Fassbender. I‘d always been partial to The Tempest, Twelfth Night, and a few others, but this new Macbeth adaptation really elevated this play for me, which is sometimes harder for me to envision while reading. 7mo

Mehso-so

The pretty writing saved this from being a Pan, but for most of this overly expositional novel, I found myself annoyed and frustrated. There is so much head hopping that it becomes dizzying, everything is explained to the reader rather than shown and the characters are irritating clichés.

After reading two Sarah Perry books, I think her writing probably isn't for me. She's poetic with language, but there's no dynamism or flow.

⭐⭐ 2 stars

Ruthiella Totally agree! I thought this book would hit my historical fiction sweet spot, but it didn‘t. Clara never did any science. She just stomped around in her boots. And there was little reals/interesting debate with the vicar about faith vs science. Lots of flash and smoke but not enough substance for me. 9mo
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella Yes, you're right. "Wearing a man's coat" seemed to be her main personality feature and there's only a vague mention of her collecting fossils and whatnot. I can see why others would like it, but it didn't work at all for me! 9mo
Branwen Melmoth is honestly the best of her works! 9mo

RaeLovesToRead @Branwen After me comes the flood had such an intriguing start, but by the end it was a 2 star read. I think I'll just conclude that she's not my cup of tea. I can see why someone would like them - she does create a kind of dreamscape - but I need more substance! 9mo

Finished this off while #audioknitting an appropriately Victorian kit purchased through the Dickens Fair. Perry‘s novel takes a nuanced look at the Victorian era tension between science, religion, and magic and the interplay of class and gender with all three. It‘s a moody book and the plot meanders quite a lot but there‘s very fine writing here that asks big questions and applies a modern sensibility while still capturing the spirit of the age.

vivastory It's really bad. I believe they said it's the longest cold period on record in KC. With wind chill it's close to -30 F today 2y
MsMelissa @vivastory Ok, that is definitely the kind of weather that would keep me inside 🥶 We‘ve been really lucky this winter. Less snow than usual, and only a few really frigid days (granted, people not used to true winter weather would think everyday is freezing here, but for us it‘s not been very cold 🤣) 2y
vivastory @MsMelissa We were lucky too. Until the last couple of weeks anyways. 2y
LeahBergen Perfect. 👌🏻 2y
KVanRead @MsMelissa @LeahBergen Finally got started tonight and really intrigued! 2y
MsMelissa @KVanRead @LeahBergen I‘m about at the halfway point. Enjoying it, but not sure what the book is actually supposed to be about. There is lots going on. 2y

I‘m starting to get into the flow of this one now and I think I‘m really going to enjoy it. 🤞🏻

How are you finding it, my fellow buddy readers? @MsMelissa @KVanRead 😊

tenar I just set this on hold at the library! I‘m looking forward to y‘all‘s thoughts. 2y
Leftcoastzen I haven‘t read it , but I love that cover! 2y

vivastory I hope you love it!! 2y
KVanRead Just about to start! Have it on audio as well so hope to make some headway doing chores tomorrow 😊 2y
MsMelissa I have finished January, and am intrigued by what I‘ve read so far. I took tomorrow off work since it‘s a holiday for most people anyway, and my plan is to spend a good chunk of my day reading the book 😊 2y
SamAnne This has been in my TBR stack for awhile. 2y
Singout I really enjoyed it! But then I have a penchant for legends and rural clergy. 2y
veritysalter I really enjoyed this one, I love when folklore is woven in to stories. Stacey Halls and Laura Purcell are two other contemporary authors who write in this style. Happy reading 📖♥️ 2y
Amiable Such a gorgeous cover 😍 2y
emilyhaldi Definitely a slow burn, but I ended up loving this one 🖤 2y

I‘m trying so hard to be a one (physical) book at time person, but all four of these novels are calling to me right now. I don‘t know if I‘ll be able to wait until I finish City of Dragons before I start my next read 😬 #bookwormproblems

BookishMarginalia I‘m a many-at-a-time any-medium person myself. I‘m a mood reader, so having many going at once just feels natural. 2y
Ruthiella I can‘t stick to one at a time either! 😀 2y
TrishB Just can‘t do that 🤷‍♀️ 2y
MsMelissa @BookishMarginalia @Ruthiella @TrishB I go through phases where I‘ll have more than one book on the go at a time, but I don‘t like to do it as a general rule. I think it takes me longer to get through each individual book. 2y
bthegood I always have a few physical, and one audio (for car and walks) - going at one time - I like the variety (like @BookishMarginalia) for my moods🙂 2y

Oh my gosh, with everything that happened today (😢) I forgot to open my #littlechristmasswap package! @Readergrrl you spoiled me rotten! This book is gorgeous and I'm so excited to try all your (I think?) local chocolates! I'm going to have a lazy day on Saturday and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!!! And thanks to @bookish_wookish for hosting!

Readergrrl I‘m so glad you like everything! Yes, Munson‘s has fantastic chocolate!! I loved The Essex Serpent too!! Enjoy! 2y

Day 5 of #12Booksof2020 When I reviewed this I commented that it would be the perfect winter book. Seems fitting for me to post it on the first day of snow & ice this season. An atmospheric novel full of potentially malevolent attacks & filled with complex characters. @andrew65

MsMelissa I can‘t wait to read it with @LeahBergen and @KVanRead in February 😊 2y
Andrew65 One I keep meaning to read. 2y

Having just finished Where The Crawdads Sing, I saw this book mentioned by @vivastory on my feed. From the summary this seemed like something I‘d be interested in and it has become my next read.
#TheEssexSerpent #SarahPerry #book #ebook #kindle #reading

aa_guer2021 I did this as a buddy read with a group of folks on Litsy. The cover sold me. Overall, a great book. Hopefully it‘s enjoyable for you! 2y
Fr3NcHtOaSt @ruskigurl16 I keep finding other books that I end up reading before this and I have tried to read it. Only got 5 pages in and just need to read it instead of finding other books to read first lol 2y
aa_guer2021 @Fr3NcHtOaSt that‘s a never-ending struggle here, too. I have fond memories, so I hope you find the time! 👍🏻 2y

Freshly widowed Cora Seaborne & her eccentric son Frances move to Essex after Cora hears about a strange sea creature that has supposedly attacked the villagers & their livestock, As a paleontologist, although she is referred to as a naturalist, Cora suspects that the titular creature that has paralyzed the village is a descendent of an icthyosaur. Cora & her companion Martha meet & befriend a wide cast of characters, notably the vicar William👇

vivastory & the physician Luke. The characterization in Essex Serpent is rich & immensely rewarding. What I found particularly compelling about the characters was the complexity of the relationships on display. The paranoia & dread that seizes Aldwinter, plus truly wonderful descriptions of marshes & cold rainy days makes for an atmospheric read. Perfect for the long winter months ahead! 2y
LeahBergen I vow to get to it soon... okay, in 2021 then. 😆 2y
rachaich I liked much of it but struggled with other parts. 2y

Fr3NcHtOaSt Having just finished Where The Crawdads Sing, I‘m going to read this next based on your summary. 2y
KVanRead Ooh 👏 such a good review! Maybe this will be the winter I finally get to this one. @Book_Fiend_Melissa @LeahBergen Maybe we should plan a buddy read? 2y
MsMelissa @KVanRead @LeahBergen Ok, fine, twist my arm. I‘m in 😉 2y

sprainedbrain I bought that book for the gorgeous cover... it‘s still on my tbr shelf. 😳 i will look forward to your review! 2y
vivastory @sprainedbrain Now I don't feel bad 😂 Although I have unread books from when I first joined Litsy 4 years ago. 2y

Palimpsest Curious to see your review. I loved parts like the religion/ science, but almost felt like too much is happening towards the end of the book (don‘t want to spoil it but class is brought into it) and I wasn‘t sure exactly where my focus was supposed to be. Still a pick as I love historical fiction during the Victorian period. ☺️ 2y
vivastory @Palimpsest It's still early days for me & I can't really tell what direction it's heading in, but I can appreciate books that take risks. I'm hopeful. 2y
DimeryRene I‘ve had this since it came out and haven‘t gotten to it!! 2y
LeahBergen I‘ve shamefully had this on my shelves for ages, too. 😬 2y
batsy @LeahBergen Same 😂 2y
saresmoore I hope you continue to enjoy it! Some have said it fizzled out for them about ⅔ of the way through, but I thought it was weird and delicious right to the end. And @batsy & @LeahBergen (depending on Scott‘s review), I think you both would really like this one! 🙂 Also, Scott, I‘ve been cataloging my books lately and I don‘t care to share the percentage of which are unread, even after a rather brutal cull. 😬 2y
readordierachel One of my favorites! 2y
vivastory @readordierachel That def bodes well! Have you read her other books? Apparently her most recent one is based on Melmoth the Wanderer. 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen @batsy No shame at all! 😂 2y
vivastory @saresmoore Oof, I need to do a cull soon. I currently have 3 shelf bookcases. I could get 5 shelf but I know I could make room by donating/selling books I either no longer have any interest in or have read & don't want to read again. 2y
readordierachel I have Melmoth but haven't gotten to it yet. I'm also interested in her memoir 2y
saresmoore It is very cathartic! That‘s exactly what I got rid of, too. Those unread books that I didn‘t want to read were so judgey from the shelves. 👀 2y
saresmoore @readordierachel I plan to start Melmoth soon, but hadn‘t heard about her memoir. Stacked! 2y
readordierachel @saresmoore It sounds really good but like it might be a tough read subject-wise 😬 2y
saresmoore @readordierachel Yeah, I stack a lot of those types of books... 2y

Not quite what I was expecting, but really freaking beautiful! One of those slow burns with an intricate story and a touch of gothic atmosphere. A perfect fall read. 🐉🧡

I also listened to her kind of feminist manifesto Essex Girls. So good! 💚💚💚

Moving and cant always put my hand on the print book I want. But The Essex Serpent is one of those rare books I keep abandoning and then wanting to finish. Trying again with the audiobook. Too good to leave unfinished but so many rivals...

I had forgotten I had this tucked away from a sale buy in Audible. Interesting little “year in the life” sort of story surrounding a group of unlikely friends/acquaintances set in 1893. Driven more by character and social relationships than by suspense, this book may not be for everyone. I enjoyed the audiobook very much, but I‘m not sure if I‘d have felt the same reading the book.

AutumnRLS Picked this up after it was recommended forever ago on The Reading Glasses podcast, but still haven't gotten to it. I've only heard good things. 2y

Here are three books I DNF‘ed. I may try them again someday, but there are so many other books to get to! If anyone wants to plead the case for one of these I‘m open to being persuaded.

#3Books #DNF

OriginalCyn620 I haven‘t attempted any of these so I can‘t make a case! 2y
SamAnne I did enjoy Let The Great World Spin. I like the historic moment in time the story was set. I picked up a used copy of The Essex Serpent but it‘s been sitting on my shelf for a couple years now. 2y
merelybookish Bleak House is a beast! 2y

MallenNC @SamAnne I have started Let the Great World Spin a couple of times but didn‘t get far. I may still try again! 2y
MallenNC @merelybookish Yes, and that was not in its favor. I think I could try it as an audiobook. Sometimes classics work better for me that way. 2y
SamAnne @MallenNC Well wait a second here. My memory is bad. It was a book club pick. I enjoyed the half I read but actually DNFd now that I think about. And I don‘t remember is work travel or what got in the way. 😀😬😏 2y
RamsFan1963 I had to read Bleak House for an English Lit class in college, otherwise I never would have read it or forced myself to finish it. 2y
MallenNC @SamAnne Ha! Maybe we will both finish it someday. 2y
MallenNC @RamsFan1963 That‘s true with a lot of those giant classics. 2y
AlaMich Bleak House seems to be one of those books that people either love or hate...not a lot of middle ground. My uncle and aunt took our family on a cruise a long time ago, and my uncle spent quite a bit of time in his cabin reading it. 2y
Leftcoastzen I love Bleak House & Let the Great World Spin . Never tried Essex , but love the cover! 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks The cover of The Essex Serpent is so beautiful!!! 2y
MallenNC @Leftcoastzen Bleak House feels like a winter read to me, so maybe I‘ll try it again! The cover of The Essex Serpent is so pretty! 2y

3.5⭐️ The Essex Serpent was a pleasant enough read. I was a little disappointed, having hoped for more magic but there was a good level of suspense and curiosity on top of a (quaint?) story about people coming together despite their differences - in interest, identity, station. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a similar ‘feel‘ to, for example, Once Upon a River. They share more in common than the jacket styling...

I‘ve never bought a book solely for its cover. However, these are three books that disappointed me after reading and that I purchased in hardcover because they were so pretty and I thought (based on reviews) they would be keepers.
