Essex Serpent
Essex Serpent | Sarah Perry
Costa Book Award Finalist and the Waterstones (UK) Book of the Year 2016"I loved this book. At once numinous, intimate and wise, The Essex Serpent is a marvelous novel about the workings of life, love and belief, about science and religion, secrets, mysteries, and the complicated and unexpected shifts of the human heart--and it contains some of the most beautiful evocations of place and landscape I've ever read. It is so good its pages seem lit from within. As soon as I'd finished it I started reading it again."--Helen MacDonald, author of H is for HawkAn exquisitely talented young British author makes her American debut with this rapturously acclaimed historical novel, set in late nineteenth-century England, about an intellectually minded young widow, a pious vicar, and a rumored mythical serpent that explores questions about science and religion, skepticism, and faith, independence and love. When Cora Seaborne's brilliant, domineering husband dies, she steps into her new life as a widow with as much relief as sadness: her marriage was not a happy one. Wed at nineteen, this woman of exceptional intelligence and curiosity was ill-suited for the role of society wife. Seeking refuge in fresh air and open space in the wake of the funeral, Cora leaves London for a visit to coastal Essex, accompanied by her inquisitive and obsessive eleven-year old son, Francis, and the boy's nanny, Martha, her fiercely protective friend. While admiring the sites, Cora learns of an intriguing rumor that has arisen further up the estuary, of a fearsome creature said to roam the marshes claiming human lives. After nearly 300 years, the mythical Essex Serpent is said to have returned, taking the life of a young man on New Year's Eve. A keen amateur naturalist with no patience for religion or superstition, Cora is immediately enthralled, and certain that what the local people think is a magical sea beast may be a previously undiscovered species. Eager to investigate, she is introduced to local vicar William Ransome. Will, too, is suspicious of the rumors. But unlike Cora, this man of faith is convinced the rumors are caused by moral panic, a flight from true belief. These seeming opposites who agree on nothing soon find themselves inexorably drawn together and torn apart--an intense relationship that will change both of their lives in ways entirely unexpected.Hailed by Sarah Waters as "a work of great intelligence and charm, by a hugely talented author," The Essex Serpent is "irresistible . . . you can feel the influences of Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, and Hilary Mantel channeled by Perry in some sort of Victorian seance. This is the best new novel I've read in years" (Daily Telegraph, London).

For whatever reason, every, single, time I turn this audio on, my mind wanders to a place of it‘s own. I‘m bailing on the audio but still plan to pick the actual book up and read it with my 👀.

Went to the used bookstore today didn't have a lot of time to browse so I grabbed the two books that I have been wanting to read that stuck out. I also didn't have to grab a library copy of the Essex Serpent, but I like the plastic over the jacket. They're both in new condition I just wish that stupid Oprah sticker wasn't there.

Two of my favourite #Green books. The Moon Stallion made quite an impression on me as a 10-year-old. I finally visited one of the locations in the book, Wayland‘s Smithy, some 30 years later and it was exactly as I remembered it from the TV series of the book.

I honestly was expecting something grander and more gothic with some mystery or even supernatural elements. While I did enjoy this book and some characters were quite unique and enjoyable, it really could have been taken in quite a different direction. It focused more on the relationships between the characters and personal development than anything really to do with a more developed plot. I still did enjoy it though.

I love this cover so very much. I think it‘s one of the prettiest books I received last year. Unfortunately I didn‘t fall quite as hard for the story. I gave it about 75 pages, 5 chapters, but I was bored and unattached to most of the characters. 🤷‍♀️. Oh well. How did you all feel about it? Anyone want to tell me what happened in a Spoiler tag in the comments? The only character I wondered about was the little autistic boy.

Tamra It was a “meh” rating for me. I don‘t remember much so that says something. 8mo

I was curious about this as opinions seemed to divide clearly between meh and loved it. Fell definitely into the love camp; though there was some sections that were a a bit of a slog; but new meds may have something to do with that. New widow is finally free to explore and become her own woman; science, hysteria, medicine, poverty, religion, socialism, friendship, love clash and affect a small cross section of Victorian lives. I quite liked it!

Same, Cora Seaborne. Same.

I am all about stories of women who decide they're going to live life how they wanna. Though some choices and characterizations were a little strange (Luke Garrett... I mean, what?), and I wish there had been more meat to the science and religion conversations, I enjoyed this story of a woman learning to live life on her own terms.

Set in 1890‘s Victorian England and tells the tale of love, between friends, husband and wife and other acquaintances. This is such a beautifully written novel and while there is no great plot, there is the Essex Serpent and the hysteria it caused. I began this book in June and it has been a bit of a slog to finish it. Set in Victorian England about Cora and her (autistic?) son who, after the death of her abusive husband travel to Essex and meet the Ransome family- a pastor who is of a scientific mind as is Cora. There are many other characters and the book touches on poverty, new surgical ideas, marxism, superstition, etc. should have loved but I think it went in too many directions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Palimpsest I agree with your review. I wasn‘t sure where my focus should be, on science/ religion/ superstition or the new women‘s movement or housing for the poor or forbidden desires. I wanted to love this book but there was just so much shoved in. 12mo
Booksnchill @Palimpsest Absolutely. I am always disappointed when books that I should love from the blurb fall short.😟 12mo
Traci1 I started this one on audio a few days ago. I'm about an hour (of 15) in and finding it very hard to follow. My thinking was maybe I should just read the paper version, but now I'm wondering if I should bother to finish at all. 12mo

Booksnchill @Traci1 i think it would be harder to follow in audio and there are many pages of letters that might be harder to discern. Many people have loved it and I gave it 3 stars myself for the writing but it was slow going and lots of different directions. Good luck! 12mo
zsuzsanna_reads My problem was that I didn't like or care about any of the characters 🙁 12mo
Booksnchill @zsuzsanna_reads i think I might have liked them but there wasn‘t enough focus on anyone to get a sense of what they were about! 12mo

Mehso-so

Eh. My feelings are that Perry should have focused on fewer plot points in order for us to care for even one of them. This one's getting donated. A disappointment.

Time for #SeptemberTBR! Three still lagging from previous months, 2 #readharder books - 1 paper, 1 from Scribd, two more paper books and two ebooks to help me #readmyowndamnbooks, finishing my last #13books13weeks book, a couple of library books, and a bunch of audios for the road trip part of our Norway trip.

Bklover Wow! This is an impressive goal! (Dostoyevsky!). Have fun on your Norway trip! 🇳🇴 13mo
HannaPolkadots Where in Norway are you traveling? 13mo
janeycanuck @Bklover I started it a month ago and am still only 30 pages in... not so impressive! 12mo
janeycanuck @HannaPolkadots we started in Oslo for a few days and have now driven into the fjords for a few days of hiking (Kjerag, Preikestolen, Trolltunga) before heading into Bergen for a bit and ending with the Norway in a Nutshell tour to get us back to Oslo. We‘re loving it so far!! 12mo
