Running with Scissors: A Memoir
Running with Scissors: A Memoir | Augusten Burroughs
"Running with Scissors" is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her psychiatrist, a dead-ringer for Santa and a lunatic in the bargain. Suddenly, at age twelve, Augusten Burroughs found himself living in a dilapidated Victorian in perfect squalor. The doctor's bizarre family, a few patients, and a pedophile living in the backyard shed completed the tableau. Here, there were no rules, there was no school. The Christmas tree stayed up until summer, and Valium was eaten like Pez. And when things got dull, there was always the vintage electroshock therapy machine under the stairs.... "Running with Scissors" is at turns foul and harrowing, compelling and maniacally funny. But above all, it chronicles an ordinary boy's survival under the most extraordinary circumstances. Running with Scissors AcknowledgmentsGratitude doesn't begin to describe it: Jennifer Enderlin, Christopher Schelling, John Murphy, Gregg Sullivan, Kim Cardascia, Michael Storrings, and everyone at St. Martin's Press. Thank you: Lawrence David, Suzanne Finnamore, Robert Rodi, Bret Easton Ellis, Jon Pepoon, Lee Lodes, Jeff Soares, Kevin Weidenbacher, Lynda Pearson, Lona Walburn, Lori Greenburg, John DePretis, and Sheila Cobb. I would also like to express my appreciation to my mother and father for, no matter how inadvertently, giving me such a memorable childhood. Additionally, I would like to thank the real-life members of the family portrayed in this book for taking me into their home and accepting me as one of their own. I recognize that their memories of the events described in this book are different than my own. They are each fine, decent, and hard-working people. The book was not intended to hurt the family. Both my publisher and I regret any unintentional harm resulting from the publishing and marketing of Running with Scissors. Most of all, I would like to thank my brother for demonstrating, by example, the importance of being wholly unique.

This will be book 6 of my year. I remember reading his book Magical Thinking and absolutely adoring the crap out of how honest a writer he is. So I definitely think I will enjoy this one.

Caffeinated_Reader If he could get through that...he can get through anything. He‘s definitely got a PhD in survival. His story was so sad and real and tragically terrifying yet hilarious and full of so much questionable shit. I am so happy he became a writer and balanced out his life. What a shit start he had. I can absolutely relate to that. 11mo

Still working away at this one. Very interesting, but sometimes have to set it down when I get overwhelmed by the fact it is a memoir and not fiction. Some truly bizarre things happening - and that is in *addition* to the downright abusive elements.

Enjoying my coffee with it this morning though. And FYI, Margaret Atwood has her own bird friendly coffee that supports the Pelee Island Bird Observatory in Ontario (Canada, not California 😅)

I give this book and this author a 5 star rating. It was a super book and it was hilarious. It has actually inspired me to write my own memoir because if his book was that funny then mine would be hilarious!🤣 I have no idea what it was about this book but it really brough4 me back and it reminded me a lot of my child hood in ways. I read this book the first time when I went to prison for the first time.

I disliked this book intensely. In my opinion there was nothing humorous here only criminal. Regardless if this was 100% authentic or even 1% true it was beyond deplorable. I‘m not easily offended or scandalized but this story was so outrageous , I received zero entertainment from it. I‘m sickened that the author had such a traumatic childhood (real or imagined)**The “Finch‘s” filed a law suit for defamation & a settlement was reached**

Started this awhile ago but wasn‘t feeling it however it caught my eye, so here I go #RoundTwo! Has this been proven to be all true or is it embellished???

Karkar I have a hard time believing it is all true. Some of this book is so out there....would be interested to know if anyone knows how much is real and how much is made up. 2y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola and I both love this book, so good luck @Cinfhen ! 😜 As with any memoir, I take it simply as the way he remembers he it. This was the very first memoir I ever read and from there it became one of my favorite genres. Hope you enjoy! 2y

LauraBeth I‘m with @Reviewsbylola and @britt_brooke on this one! I love it and never doubted for once that it wasn‘t true - primarily because I know of two women whose fathers were psychiatrists who both had a similar growing up experience and they told me their stories prior to when this book was released - so I believe every word of it! 2y
britt_brooke @LauraBeth 🙌🏻🙌🏻 2y
Cinfhen @LauraBeth I believe author believes this story is all true and I don‘t doubt that evil exists in this world but I 100% believe LARGE parts of this story were embellished and I did NOT enjoy ANY parts of this memoir, be it true or false‼️I HATED this read, I‘m still trying to figure out what left me with such a bad taste. #funhouse makes me think of one of my favorite memoirs, RWS. Although I wouldn‘t really classify the Turcotte home as “fun”.

I‘ve loved Burroughs ever since I read this book. He has such a dry but witty voice and He is at the top of my list of authors I would love to meet. On the flip side, the Turcotte family was devastated by the publication of this book. If you haven‘t read the Vanity Fair article about them, do it! #getmovin

When I first started the book I was not sure how much I would enjoy it. I was caught off guard by the memoir and slightly skeptical that any of it had ever happened. As the story continued the more unbelievable details were, the more it made me actually believe the story was true (as true as it can be from the author‘s perception). I would suggest this as a must read for others.

I have this fear of cutting myself. It's ridiculous. I know it doesn't make sense, still I avoid sharp objects whenever I can.

Pics from internet.

Tamra We all have quirks! The first question that popped into my mind was whether you liked to cook and how do you deal with the slicing, dicing etc? These days we have more alternatives re: tools. 2y
julesG @Tamra I love cooking and I have pretty large and sharp knives. I have cut myself maybe only a few times in the past 15 years and it was never with a knife. Once with a mandolin and twice on broken glass - that's what I remember. 2y
Tamra @julesG that‘s a good record! I think I burn my fingers on the oven more than cut them. I have also scraped them on the grater which hurts more than cutting! 😩 (edited) 2y

I *think* I first read this in 2007. I enjoyed this #audiobook as a #reread, but after now listening to two of his narrations, I can say I'm not a great fan when he does the voices of other folks. He's great as himself, but he sounds ridiculous as - for example - Dr. Finch, like a mall Santa Claus or something. But, I still adore him. I'll always credit this book for getting me into memoirs, one of my favorite genres.

Cortg I read this way back when and it's been a favorite ever since. I'll make sure NOT to listen to it though 🤣 2y

dariazeoli I got a copy of this from a Little Free Library a couple weeks ago. May have to save it for later if it's tough 2y
JenP @britt_brooke yeah, I know lots of people who love him. This particularly book touched a nerve for me. I read it for a book club and at the time all the members were psychology doctors students and we all had bad reactions to it. Given that I work in the field, I sometimes find it hard to find humor in certain types of topics. 2y
britt_brooke @JenP You definitely have a different perspective on it. And that makes sense. 2y
britt_brooke @dariazeoli It's also funny. It's a weird combination. 2y

Mix The Royal Tenenbaums with The Big Bang Theory and you have a quirky book about family dysfunction, humorous introverts, and the need to find ones own place in the world. Reviewsbylola I loved all but the HP (which I haven't read). 3y
Lmstraubie @Reviewsbylola I have to say I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the HP series, bit was not a big fan of The Cursed Child. It kind of fell flat for me. 3y
Reviewsbylola I read the first two HP but it's just not really my thing plus I have a horrible track record for finishing series. I have to love it to go beyond the second book. 3y

Running with Scissors: A Memoir | Augusten Burroughs

I hated this book. It was awful. Disgusting, outrageous, and sad. And not in a way that could help people or change something for good, or that makes you think or... anything. Just bad.

vandeblogger I read this years ago, but I had basically the same reaction. Not a fan. 3y
AnnabelleSpeaks Same. Goodreads tells me I read that in 2008 and ranked It one star. By memory I finished it only so I could rank it one star, since I only rank books I finish. I read one other book by him and ranked it two stars, then gave up. Not my thing. 3y

Running with Scissors: A Memoir | Augusten Burroughs
Pickpick

This book is intense! It's a memoir about being a gay boy growing up with a crazy mother who leaves her son with a crazier family. There are funny moments, and heartbreaking ones as well and plenty of scenes that make you audibly say "what the f*ck?!"

I'm not good with memoirs because I start to doubt them after a while. They seem too detailed and I call BS. This, however, wasn't funny and maybe that's because I now have kids. I felt so badly for Augusten & disgusted by all the situations everyone was involved in. I see why people like it but I thought it was just sad and depressing.
