Heidi (Illustrated by Alice Carsey)
Heidi (Illustrated by Alice Carsey) | Johanna Spyri
First published in Swiss German in 1881, Johanna Spyri's "Heidi" is the classic children's story which has delighted readers both young and old ever since its original publication. It is the story of its titular character, Heidi, a girl orphaned at the age of five, who is sent to live with her Grandfather in the Swiss Alps by her Aunt Detie. Her Grandfather has the reputation of having a nasty disposition but Heidi quickly warms up to him. Heidi soon befriends her neighbors and residents of the mountain town, however after three years, Aunt Detie returns to bring Heidi to Frankfurt to be a hired companion to a girl named Clara Sesemann, the daughter of a wealthy family, who is regarded as an invalid. While the two become close friends, Heidi eventually develops an intense case of home sickness for the mountain home of her Grandfather and when the family doctor realizes the stress that she is under it is advised that she return to the mountains before she becomes terribly ill. A charming and uplifting story, "Heidi" is a classic coming of age story which addresses the difficulty in overcoming tragedy and finding one's place in the world. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and is illustrated by Alice Carsey.

Thx so much @TheBookHippie for including Heidi in this month‘s #ChildrensClassicRead2024. I finally read this gem for the first time and loved it! 🙌🏻 I also watched the film version (on VHS!) with my Mom. Of course, the book is so much better, but the movie is perfectly cast with Shirley Temple as Heidi & it‘s quite amusing too. What a heartwarming adventure!
P.S. Count me in when we all move to the mountains and tend our goats!🐐

I enjoyed this book. I'm a little tempted to move to a Swiss village with the smell of fresh air, surrounded by flowers and goats and no technology. I'll be daydreaming about that while I'm stuck in front of my computer for too many hours tomorrow. #childrensclassicread2024 @TheBookHippie

I absolutely loved this book. It reminded me of Little Lord Fauntleroy in that Heidi is such a ray of sunshine that she makes everyone around her happier, but not in such a sickly sweet way as Fauntleroy. I loved the gorgeous Swiss setting in the Alps; I loved the characters; I loved the plot and the happy things that result from people being good to each other. Books intended for children don‘t need to be for just children!

Yesterday was a gloomy, rainy day, and I was home for most of it, so I actually finished another book from my #BookSpinBonanza list!! Heidi is very old-fashioned and gently religious, but it has lost none of its charm in the 140 years since it was published.

runswithscissors007 It was one of my favourite Shirley temple movies. I will have to read the book! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @runswithscissors007 - it was published in 1880 and you can tell (lol) but it is still a very adorable book and I got choked up over more than one chapter. I didn't mind the religious parts since my faith is important to me, but I can see that aspect being rather eye-roll inducing to someone who doesn't share those beliefs. But I was surprised at easy this one was to read overall - I quite enjoyed it!! 4y
runswithscissors007 Thanks for reminding me of it! I will be keeping my eyes open for a copy. 🏔 ⛰ (edited) 4y

This was my #doublespin pick. Oh! I enjoyed the beautiful description of Swiss mountains especially during this period where we can‘t step outside. It is a light n quick reading, feels like fresh air, with lots of positive thoughts n hopes. Little Heidi‘s character is very cute one. One can learn about the power of prayers as well. 4⭐️

TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle - thanks for hosting!! I've never tried this type of challenge, so I'm excited about it. And it's even inspired me to finally start cataloguing all my books onto LibraryThing so I can sort them by location more easily! 4y
See All 13 Comments
BarbaraBB That‘s a nice job for the weekend, cataloguing your books 😍 4y
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraBB - I'm always looking for new ways to track them haha I do technically have every title entered in a spreadsheet so that I can track if/when they have been read. But entering them via LibraryThing means I can also sort them by tags, which is pretty nifty. Over a thousand of them so it will take a little time!! 4y
Librarybelle I love LibraryThing, and I heavily use the tagging feature. Very time consuming, but also very rewarding! 4y
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks Me too, I love LT for cataloguing and tagging! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB - while we are on the topic of LT and tags, do either of you happen to know if it's possible to just copy community tags for a book onto mine? For instance, I add a book I own. I can look at the book on LT and see what tags other members have used for the same book. Is there a way to bulk add those tags, or do I just need to add tags for each title on my own? Lots of times other members have much better tags than I do! 4y
Librarybelle That‘s a good question! I‘ve not tried to do that on my account. I usually just retype any tag I like better than mine. If you do discover a way, please let me know. That would save some time! 4y
BarbaraBB I don‘t know either. But we can always ask @TimSpalding 4y
TimSpalding @BarbaraBB No. I understand why you might want it, and I think it might be good if we made community tags—or at the least the top X tags per book—available in this way. But part of the point of tags is to encourage members to use what comes to their mind for books, and develop their own system. If we allowed members to skip that, and use each other's tags, we'd get less interesting tags—and I think members would have less interesting tags too. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @TimSpalding - thank you! That does make sense, although it may be helpful to have a handful of common tags to “checkbox add“ for starters. I'm really enjoying getting my books added into the system!! 4y

I never read Heidi as a child, so I don‘t have any sentimental strings attached. I don‘t feel this one has aged as well as other children‘s books from the mid to late 1800‘s, like Little Women. It was also quite preachy, esp the 2nd half. It is a sweet story.

It did fill a lot of prompts!

LibrarianRyan I agree. 5y
Cinfhen I‘m not sure if I could make it through a preachy tome written in the late 1800s 😜 sounds like torture 5y
alisiakae @Cinfhen It wasn‘t too heavy-handed, and it was all in the 2nd half, so I was already committed by the time I reached it. I probably would have bailed if Heidi didn‘t ✔️ so many reading challenge prompts! And it‘s a quick read. 5y
alisiakae @Cinfhen It does make the very short list of books I won‘t recommend to Maya. 😂 5y

I started off thinking I‘d rate this read of it (an audio) 4 stars, I decided on 3.5 (good). I suspect it might have been better to read it, rather than listen; however, fond memories remain. I did enjoy the reminder of what actually happened in the book (although it does seem I missed bits and pieces, here and there – I suspect I wouldn‘t have if I‘d not listened to the audio).

StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks no but I‘d like to. I recently bought this copy of the book - I‘ll keep my eyes out for the others 🙂 5y
TheAromaofBooks Since the others weren't written by Spyri, I don't think they were quite as popular. I remember enjoying Heidi Grows Up, but don't really member much about it. I haven't found a copy of Heidi's Children yet. I have a few other Spyri books on the shelves that I have picked up at secondhand shops over the years, but have never actually read! 5y

Heidi, by Johanna Spyro, Best Children‘s Literature, literary fiction, read aloud. The story is an orphan girl, Heidi was sent to live with her grandfather who went to live in the Alps. Heidi books on my shelves for #theheidiproject @KassKho

On "my" shelves but taken from my sister many years ago; it's all water under the bridge now. ? The Heidi book (right) is by an Indian press, St. Paul Publications, and it's from 1976 with illustrations by Ian Pinto. And I just realised that Heidi Grows Up was written by Charles Tritten, Spyri's translator. This edition is also from 1976, by The Children's Press.

batsy @KassKho The translator is not credited in these editions either! I only know that he was the translator because I looked him up as the author of Heidi Grows Up (I wasn't aware that Spyri wasn't the author of the follow-up 😳) 7y
