Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (Updated)
Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (Updated) | Anthony Bourdain
An updated and revised edition of Anthony Bourdain's mega-bestselling Kitchen Confidential, with new material from the original editionAlmost two decades ago, the New Yorker published a now infamous article, "Don't Eat before You Read This," by then little-known chef Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain spared no one's appetite as he revealed what happens behind the kitchen door. The article was a sensation, and the book it spawned, the now classic Kitchen Confidential, became an even bigger sensation, a megabestseller with over one million copies in print. Frankly confessional, addictively acerbic, and utterly unsparing, Bourdain pulls no punches in this memoir of his years in the restaurant business.Fans will love to return to this deliciously funny, delectably shocking banquet of wild-but-true tales of life in the culinary trade from Chef Anthony Bourdain, laying out his more than a quarter-century of drugs, sex, and haute cuisine--this time with never-before-published material.

This is a fascinating and (at times) horrifying look at cooking on a professional level. The audio, read by Bourdain himself, was great. Be aware going in that his tone is blunt, and his language is rough. His critiques of others and himself are unflinching. It was a little sad reading this knowing how his story ended, but I‘m very glad I read it.

Leftcoastzen I miss him , I‘m still heartbroken. Great read though. 3mo

I had no idea that this book was going to be so brash, and not in a good way. I thought the beginning was very boring, but as it got into Bourdain's addictions I started to get more interested. Rather than being about what it's like to be a chef or work in the industry, it's very specific to his experiences. Also, in later chapters he mentions other cooks dying by suicide rather crassly, which was very strange, especially on audiobook

I finally finished this tonight. I started about a year ago after Anthony Bourdain died. I finished it on audiobook because it was comforting being read to. My Alex was a fan of Bourdain as well. I miss Alex so much. He was so smart and funny. Early mornings like this when I‘d get off work, sometimes Alex would wait up for me and we‘d talk or listen to music. Maybe he‘s had the opportunity to meet Bourdain in the hereafter. I hope so. 💔

1. Crab cake eggs benedict or some Eggo waffles with butter and syrup. Or a croissant!

2. I had a hard time with this one, but I am just so confused by the concept of sushi burritos. Why????

3. If I'm eating alone then absolutely! Anything for more reading time!

4. Starbucks vanilla latte. Or any vanilla latte would work.

5. Short on time today, so this one is for anyone who wants to share their own!

Seems I am getting more reading done on travel these days. Picked this one off my shelf on a whim this morning before I left for the airport even though I had two others planned. I was instantly hooked. Turns out it's Anthony Bourdain day (his birthday). I have not read anything by him or seen more than a snippet of one episode of his TV shows, but from this narrative, I can see why he was beloved.

Samplergal Loved the book. And him. Still miss him and his show. 6mo

That creepy feeling you get when you finish a book, immediately look up the author/subject on Wikipedia, and realize you finished his book on the one year anniversary of his death. 😮

This is a fascinating look into what goes on in a restaurant kitchen. I don‘t think I‘ll be as cavalier when eating out—it certainly makes you wonder about what‘s going on in the kitchen! And sadly I doubt I‘ll ever order mussels or hollandaise Sauce again. 😭

BarbaraTheBibliophage That‘s a sad coincidence. 😰 6mo

Now that's how you write a memoir! Bourdain is unflinching when it comes to assessing his character, choices and the environment he works in. He comes across as such a paradox - a nice guy with a tough exterior. It's so sad that he's no longer with us but from this book it seems like he lived his life the way he wanted to so hopefully died with few regrets.

Would you care for some Tongue en Madere? I'd ask through clenched teeth, my face a rictus of faux #cheer as I'd have to repeat and repeat for the hard-of-hearing captains of industry who ate the same spread of sauce-disguised leftovers every lunch and for whom the hot entree was clearly the highlight of their day. 'Boiled beef with horseradish sauce, sir?' I'd chirp. 'And would you care for a steamed potato with that?'

Finally reading Kitchen Confidential, and while it's as entertaining as expected, man, could it use a copy editor. I'm less than 20% in, and I have already seen enough missing words, wrong words, and lack of proper punctuation to make me despair. I'm really surprised to see this kind of work in such a hugely popular, bestselling book.

Does anyone else find their reading experience marred by poor copy editing? Or am I the only nerd?

candority Oh, that drives me nuts! 10mo
Soubhiville Usually I‘m annoyed by it, but I don‘t remember noticing any while reading this... I have the kindle version so maybe it‘s been edited or updated? Actually I‘m probably not the best judge this time as I read it during my surgery recovery last summer, probably not completely coherently... 🤪 10mo
Susannah I see errors in books all the time, and it drives me crazy. I wish I could find data related to the number of copy editors in the book industry over the past 20 years to see if it has declined. Whether a book is fiction or nonfiction, poor copy editing takes me right out of a book. 🤦‍♀️ 10mo
See All 9 Comments
JazzFeathers @Susannah l do see mistakes (usually typos) more than l used to. I do think this is a service publishers are shrinking on. 10mo
kalinichta @candority Especially when you have to re-read a sentence three times to figure out what that heck it means. 10mo
kalinichta @Soubhiville 😃 I'm reading a Kindle version, too. I've taken to highlighting instances now, and I found three within an hour's reading. I may get my hands on a paper copy to compare because it's really astounding to me. 10mo
kalinichta @Susannah I know with the growing popularity of the internet, I'd seen numerous online articles that clearly hadn't been copy edited, but to see it increasing in books is distressing. 10mo
SamAnne Agreed. And I‘m doing the audio. 7mo

Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Anthony Bourdain is probably aware that he was a self styled rebel with incredible charisma and admirable swagger. This translates beautifully in his writing, although this earlier work lacks some of his later-in-life self awareness.

To be honest I could have done with less kitchen and more confidential, but that‘s definitely my problem, not his.

I‘m still so saddened by the passing of Anthony Bourdain, and I figured I was overdue on this one. The fact that the audiobook is read by him is a delight. There‘s a lot of uncouth and fairly predictably bad stuff about race (mostly essentializing people, e.g. lots of talk about “hard working Ecuadorians” and unfortunate attempt to imitate accents) but I still loved it. What a writer. We‘re worse off without him around. [painting by Thomas Evans!]

I listened to Anthony Bourdain narrate this and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not much of a foodie, so I preferred the parts about Bourdain's escapades in the many kitchens he was a part of. I also enjoyed hearing about what goes into making a kitchen run as well as getting a restaurant up and running. Bourdain's candor and gritty storytelling made this a good one to listen to.⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
