Bellewether | Susanna Kearsley
From the bestselling author of A Desperate Fortune and The Firebird, comes an entrancing new novel of love, war, and historical intrigue. Some houses seem to want to hold their secrets. Its 1759 and the world is at war, pulling the North American colonies of Britain and France into the conflict. The times are complicated, as are the loyalties of many New York merchants who have secretly been trading with the French for years, defying Britains colonial laws in a game growing ever more treacherous. When captured French officers are brought to Long Island to be billeted in private homes on their parole of honour, it upends the lives of the Wilde familydeeply involved in the treasonous trade and already divided by war. Lydia Wilde, struggling to keep the peace in her fracturing family following her mothers death, has little time or kindness to spare for her unwanted guests. And Canadian lieutenant Jean-Philippe de Sabran has little desire to be there. But by the wars end theyll both learn love, honour, and duty can form tangled bonds that are not broken easily. Their doomed romance becomes a local legend, told and re-told through the years until the present day, when conflict of a different kind brings Charley Van Hoek to Long Island to be the new curator of the Wilde House Museum. Charley doesnt believe in ghosts. But as she starts to delve into the history of Lydia and her French officer, it becomes clear that the Wilde House holds more than just secrets, and Charley discovers the legend might not have been telling the whole story...or the whole truth.

A gentle story to relax with. A focus on a time period under represented in literature. The duel timelines helped make the point regarding historical authenticity vs. alternative tellings of facts. Unfortunately, the characters were dry, the romance was underwhelming(the couple couldn't even speak to one another until 3/4ths of the way through), and it got slow in parts that didn't really contribute to the story development.

Started off good then the details going from past to present bogged this story down for me. Charley gets the job of renewing an old house that has a past. Ghosts are abound as she tries to get the townsfolk on board to help with the job. I just wanted more dialogue in this book. Last chapter was good!!!🥴

Hey ladies! Here are the books I was thinking of for the Historical Fiction #LMPBC round.

If you don‘t like any of these, I have a couple of others. However, a lot of the historical fiction books I have are 2 timelines with 1 historic and 1 is present day.

See All 6 Comments
megnews I just read Moloka‘i for round 6 of #lmpbc. I have Carnegie‘s Maid on my tbr. Bellewether sounds good too. 1mo
Chrissyreadit I was considering Moloka‘i too! But @megnews answered that- I‘ve read Bellewether- Susannah Kearsley is one of my favorite authors. Carnegie‘s Maid would be my first choice. Tulip Fever a second. I will try to post some options later today. 1mo
Butterfinger Hah never mind about Moloka'i. That's funny. I have not read any of these. 1mo

So my weekend of doing nothing has sort of turned into a bookshop hopping vacation. My (non-reader) husband keeps enabling me by saying "do you want to go to this one?" Um, yeah, course I do. We've been to three so far. One indie, one Barnes and Noble, and one used shop. And I have tried sooo hard to be good. I have not been good. But look at all the pretty things. I wonder what housekeeping must think.

Dragon Nice haul! I enjoyed Husband‘s Secret and Wonder Woman 😀🐉 . Enjoy! 6mo

Susanna Kearsley is one of my favorite historical fiction authors. Her characters are very relatable, and her storylines are so delicately intertwined with actual history that I never realize I'm learning about real history. Truly engaging and always lovely ♡

Now I remember why I‘ve always enjoyed Kearsley‘s books—sometimes you just want to escape into a historical fiction/romantic suspense book. Modern storyline follows Charlotte, new curator at the Wilde House Museum, as she supervises the renovation of the house & preparations for a new exhibit on Captain Benjamin Wilde‘s life. 18th c. storyline follows a captured French officer & Lydia Wilde. Ghosts, family secrets, history make this a good read.

Ok, I admit it...my next read was a pick based on the cover. I‘ve been reading Kearsley for ages, though nothing in the past few years, and I‘m excited to read another one of her books. I suspect this one was added to my TBR after our trip to Canada during the summer as it has to do with a captured French Canadian lieutenant and the daughter of the house who isn‘t too happy to have him there...

Got this YA title from my library's New Books shelf & stayed up last night to finish it before I had to return it today. Difficult & painful to read but a very good & still hopeful look at a family torn apart in the aftermath of a rape. Explores rape culture & the impact on the rape survivor & her family through the perspectives of Ashley & her brother Derek-whose testimony at his football teammate's trial helps lessen his sentence. Powerful.💜

I can‘t wait to read New York Times bestselling author Suzanna Kearsley‘s new book, Bellewether. Love Susanna Kearsley, and this book was right in line with her previous books. The main difference in this one was that it took place in the Americas instead of Europe and dealt with themes of this place at a turbulent time - 1760 - before the Revolutionary War when the British, French, Colonists from US and Canada, slaves, Indigenous Peoples, etc. all lived and fought and died here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

RaimeyGallant Interesting. Must have taken a lot of research. 14mo

Just finished. I loved this book. I love stories that take place in two time periods. I love history. I loved that this took place on Long Island, and when they left the belt because of traffic and got back on just before the Verrazano I knew exactly where they were. It‘s the little things in a book that draw me in. I loved the characters, and the depth I felt of character development. I loved the romance even though it was slow.

I wish I had the best words to encourage you to read this book. It‘s vibrantly beautiful, modern and maybe Kearsley‘s best work to date. I loved the relationship between Sam & Charley - how it‘s relaxed edges mirrored the tone of the novel - we‘ve got all the time in the world to just be.
