Tulip Fever
Tulip Fever | Deborah Moggach
A tale of art, beauty, lust, greed, deception and retribution -- set in a refined society ablaze with tulip fever. In 1630s Amsterdam, tulipomania has seized the populace. Everywhere men are seduced by the fantastic exotic flower. But for wealthy merchant Cornelis Sandvoort, it is his young and beautiful wife, Sophia, who stirs his soul. She is the prize he desires, the woman he hopes will bring him the joy that not even his considerable fortune can buy. Cornelis yearns for an heir, but so far he and Sophia have failed to produce one. In a bid for immortality, he commissions a portrait of them both by the talented young painter Jan van Loos. But as Van Loos begins to capture Sophia's likeness on canvas, a slow passion begins to burn between the beautiful young wife and the talented artist. As the portrait unfolds, so a slow dance is begun among the household's inhabitants. Ambitions, desires, and dreams breed a grand deception -- and as the lies multiply, events move toward a thrilling and tragic climax. In this richly imagined international bestseller, Deborah Moggach has created the rarest of novels -- a lush, lyrical work of fiction that is also compulsively readable. Seldom has a novel so vividly evoked a time, a place, and a passion. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This book was soooo bad! None of the characters‘ motivations made any sense, the epigraphs throughout the chapters were super eclectic, and so on. The only good thing about this book was that it was a quick read. Had it not been a book club pick, I wouldn‘t have bothered.

🌟🌟 I love her writing style but the story was way too easy to figure out. There was little mystery and no thrills.

I did like it, but, as it happens with these books which are similar in subject, themes and time period (The Miniaturist, Girl in Hyacinth Blue), my first temptation is to compare them all with Girl with a Pearl Earring, which is SO exquisite and probably my favorite art-inspired book. Oh, forget my ramble, pick it up, it's fast and entertaining.

LaviniaG @BarbaraBB are you Dutch? There was this interesting tradition mentioned in the book: when people died, all the paintings in the house were turned with their face to the walls. Why was that? Thx! 6y
BarbaraBB Yes I am Dutch but I‘ve never heard of this tradition. I googled it and I couldn‘t find anything about it either... I‘m sorry! 6y
LaviniaG @BarbaraBB Oh, don't worry. I hope the author didn't just invent that for the book's sake. Thanks anyway! 6y
TheBookHippie That‘s a Friesian.. byleauwe spirits folklore tradition Germanic in origin I think ? I‘ll ask my dad if he remembers (he‘s 80) my grandma was French Fries (Jewish) but I do remember some weird funeral superstitions she told us about when she was a girl that her neighbors did ... totally forget until I read this post! 4y

This was a gift and I read it on a plane journey. I really enjoyed it. Love books that take true facts and make a fiction story. Loved it all. I watched the movie when I got home. The book was way better. @MrsMalaprop

Relaxing in one of my favourite cities. This was my plane read. I would have finished it but got seduced into watching a movie. I‘ll get it finished today. Though @MrsMalaprop once again I feel like I‘ve read it before. 😊.
It is another of my birthday presents from last year. I try to read one a month .

MrsMalaprop Enjoy Singapore. We have our high tea with Michelle Johnston this afternoon 😍📚. Will try to remember to take a photo & post it on here for you 😊. 6y
Jeg @MrsMalaprop thanks I‘d love that. Michelle has my copy to get signed. I think I might get to hear her in June. I think she will be at the local library. Fingers crossed. I‘m missing two book things and I‘m only away 4 days!! 6y

This book was ok. Short, predictable read. A bit boring really. I'm wondering if the movie was any better. Has anyone seen It?

DivineDiana No, but I love tulips! 💐 6y

Always a good sign when you can buy tulips in the supermarket again. No way near the end of winter but the end is in sight!

Last year for our anniversary we were going on a week long vacation. So I told my hubby don't waste money on flowers since I wouldn't be able to enjoy them. He surprised me with a bouqet of books with flowers in the title. The perfect gift for a reader. Ever since he has given me "flower books" for each holiday. I keep all the books and write down when I got them. These are my books for my annivesary this year.

I read Tulip Fever this year because of my interest with Tulipomania and Dutch and Flemish art. It's really more of a soap opera love story than anything else, but I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it is; I read it in two days. I'm interested in seeing how it translates to film. #artrelatedbooks #seasonsreadings2016
