October: The Story of the Russian Revolution | China Miville
132 posts | 19 read | 3 reading | 62 to read
Acclaimed fantasy author China Miville plunges us into the year the world was turned upside down The renowned fantasy and science fiction writer China Miville has long been inspired by the ideals of the Russian Revolution and here, on the centenary of the revolution, he provides his own distinctive take on its history. In February 1917, in the midst of bloody war, Russia was still an autocratic monarchy: nine months later, it became the first socialist state in world history. How did this unimaginable transformation take place? How was a ravaged and backward country, swept up in a desperately unpopular war, rocked by not one but two revolutions? This is the story of the extraordinary months between those upheavals, in February and October, of the forces and individuals who made 1917 so epochal a year, of their intrigues, negotiations, conflicts and catastrophes. From familiar names like Lenin and Trotsky to their opponents Kornilov and Kerensky; from the byzantine squabbles of urban activists to the remotest villages of a sprawling empire; from the revolutionary railroad Sublime to the ciphers and static of coup by telegram; from grand sweep to forgotten detail. Historians have debated the revolution for a hundred years, its portents and possibilities: the mass of literature can be daunting. But here is a book for those new to the events, told not only in their historical import but in all their passion and drama and strangeness. Because as well as a political event of profound and ongoing consequence, Miville reveals the Russian Revolution as a breathtaking story.

Here are my results for October‘s #BookSpinBingo: I completed my #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin (and also belatedly finished September‘s BookSpin and DoubleSpin!), but came up just short of a bingo. (I‘m so close—halfway through Clouds of Witness, which would have accomplished a bingo!)

All in all an interesting read, I've learned some new things. BUT I guess it was more written for students of history or people who live in Russia. The book goes very much into details, with names I've never heard of (and I've read a lot of books about the Russian Revolution), with discussions and meetings etc. etc. Therefore, I had a somewhat hard time with this book...

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaOfBooks

Buechersuechtling But you made your way through. Congratulations on that‼️👏🏼 1y
Jari-chan @Buechersuechtling Thank you 😄 1y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! I'm not any kind of Russian expert, but I really enjoyed this one. It's dense but somehow felt approachable, and there is a fantastic chapter about what a totalitarian government is and how they come into power. 1y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks That really sounds like a readworthy book! Guess my TBR grows a little further ;) 1y
TheAromaofBooks A constant danger!! 😂 1y

An immensely readable and impeccable researched account of one of the most consequential events of the 20th century. The inclusion of an index of names is much appreciated as is the thoughtful reflection on the events transpired provided in the epilogue. Some may be put off by what can be seen as a bias toward the Bolsheviks in the telling of the story, but hey, they won, what can ya do?

Oh gosh @Avanders this is an Amazing package!!!! I am so excited for my #stacationintime #sit to Russia! Everything is perfect. You did such a cool job with the theme. The composition book is hilarious, the map is sooo cool, the candle smells great. The chocolate will be eaten shortly and I am super excited about these books! Also impressed you chose one I was reading!!!

So far this book is brilliant. If someone would have told me I would find myself emotionally enveloped in a telling of the Russian Revolution, I'd have said that person was mad. That being said, this is one of my favorite authors telling the story, so perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised. To say I am deeply mystified by its unique narrative is an understatement.
