So this happened yesterday; I hit 100 books for the year. I know that there are many here on Litsy that read many more books, but this is the first time I have ever read 100 books in a calendar year. I thank the Litsy community for inspiring me to read and for giving me permission to spend so much time reading unapologetically.

Bklover This is wonderful!! Congratulations!! 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Congratulations! Litsy is inspiring. I love seeing all the ways we squeeze reading into our busy lives. 5y

When Goodreads keeps it real about how behind you are. 😅 But hey, 100 books down, right? 😜📚🎉 #goodreadschallenge

Pamwurtzler Yes! Don‘t let them stress you. 6y
ephemeralwaltz That's a VERY impressive number!! Don't mind goodreads😂 5y
KrystleTheBookSlayer Either way, you read more than me! Good job and don't stress! 😊 5y

MatchlessMarie @Pamwurtzler @ephemeralwaltz @KrystleTheBookSlayer I always keep my goal number kind of high since I count picture books I read to my kid too. About 40 books I‘ve read this year are picture books 😜 (edited) 5y
HKGirl @MatchlessMarie I count picture books too, and I don't even have kids yet 😂 I just love discovering good picture books. 5y

#192019challenge started as a personal reading resolution and has grown to include so many lovely littens!

For those who don't know #192019, here's a quick rundown:

🔹the aim is to read a book published in each year from 1920 to 2019
🔹target completion is anytime in 2019 (I'm aiming for my birthday in April)
🔹most of us seem to be reading in random order
🔹hashtags in use are #192019challenge and #192019

That's it! All welcome to join us!

Marchpane I tagged anyone who's used the hashtags. If I missed someone, please let me know! 7y
CocoReads Yep--I'm super random. I just read a book and if it fits then I throw it in there. I'm probably going to need to focus better though, if I'm going to complete it. 7y
queerbookreader Question 🙋🏻 Do books that you have already read count or no? Like I've read some Nancy Drew books before in the last few years, does that count towards those years or do I have to read new books now for it to count 7y
See All 27 Comments
Sweettartlaura I'm loving it! Thanks, @Marchpane 🙌🏻 7y
readordierachel How many years have you completed so far? 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Here it is @Gezemice 😉👍 7y
christineandbooks Having lots of fun with this challenge! Thanks for sharing the idea with us, @Marchpane 😊 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CocoReads That's what I've been doing this year too. I figure by next year this time I'll have to start looking for books for missing years. 7y
Yeah_I_Read This sounds awesome! I'm down for it 7y
Marchpane @ReadOrDieRachel I started last October and have read 36 out of 100! On track to meet my April 2019 deadline 😉 7y
Marchpane @lemonlime799 I didn't count books read prior to starting, but I know some people have just joined in & are counting books read since the start of this year. But honestly, do whatever works for you! There are no hard and fast rules 😊 7y
Marchpane @CocoReads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think the randomness really helps - I need that flexibility! 😂 7y
Marchpane @Sweettartlaura @christineandbooks thanks for joining in - it's more fun with friends! 😊 7y
Marchpane @Yeah_I_Read Yay! Excited to have you join us 👍😁 7y
Gezemice This looks like fun! I will go back but not sure for how much. Thanks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa (edited) 7y
azulaco Definitely not as far along as I'd like to be with this challenge...hopefully will do better in the latter part of this year. 7y
Kristel I might start this challenge this month 7y

Marchpane @Gezemice @Kristel @SaraBeagle @TheDaysGoBy @Jerdencon Welcome all! So exciting to have more friends joining in 😁 7y
Wife I love ❤️ this idea! How long ago did you start? 7y
Marchpane @wife I started in October last year so it's been 10 months now. Chugging steadily along! 7y
Wife I'm in. Trying to decide if I want to include books I've already read this year or start fresh. 🤔 7y

Ok, seeing @Marchpane 's posts convinced me that I want to try out her #192919challenge over the next couple of years. I too have a milestone birthday in 2019, and I've also been lamenting the fact that I read so many newer books and don't always take the time out to read older books. I did go back 8 months and filled in some books I have read that fit various years. Sure enough, heavy on books from 1998 on. Excited about this!

dariazeoli 2019 is a big one for me, too. Maybe I'll join you guys 🤔 7y
GypsyKat Hmm, I have a milestone next year, but 1919-2018 doesn't seem to have the same ring to it. 7y
See All 9 Comments
celtichik @GypsyKat I'm a 2018 milestone as well... perhaps a 1918-2018? 7y
GypsyKat @celtichik that may work! 😊 7y
HannaPolkadots Wow - I love this idea! Alas milestonewise I just passed one , but how milestoney does it have to be anyway? 😉 7y
christineandbooks @HannaPolkadots @GypsyKat @celtichik I don't think it has to be a milestone year for you to participate in the challenge. It was just mentioned by @Marchpane in the initial post explaining the challenge and how she came up with the idea. ☺ 7y
celtichik It's such a great challenge idea 7y
Marchpane @christineandbooks Yay! So awesome you decided to do it! Can't wait to see some of your book choices 😄 @HannaPolkadots No milestone required, it was just a good motivator for me 😊 @dariazeoli @GypsyKat @celtichik Hope you can join in! 7y

Needed a visual to track my progress on the #192019challenge, so I made this card. It's filling up - 30 books down, 70 to go!

Seems I've been neglecting the 1940's and 1980's thus far 🤔🤔

Lacythebookworm Do you have a goal set for when you to be finished? 7y
Marchpane @Lacythebookworm I'm aiming for April 2019 (my birthday) but I'm happy with anytime in 2019. It's a long haul challenge! 7y
llwheeler This is such a cool challenge, I might give it a try 7y
See All 20 Comments
Lacythebookworm That's great! Did you create this challenge? 7y
Ms_T Now that's a challenge. Good luck! 7y
Marchpane @llwheeler it's really satisfying, I've found so many gems too! @Lacythebookworm I did! I'd seen similar ones that were "the 20th century in books" so it's a modified version of that. There are a few others on Litsy participating too. 7y
Librarybelle What a fun idea! This is something that really piques my interest. 7y
DivineDiana Such a clever challenge! 7y
Nat_Reads I like this a lot! 7y
quirkyreader Welcome to the world of Forgotten Fiction. I am glad that you are enjoying it. 🐸🐙 7y
drokka I suspect WWII years might be a little tougher to fill. 7y
Lcsmcat That chart makes me want to take up this challenge! 7y
christineandbooks I've seen this referred to a few times. Didn't know you created the challenge...such a cool idea! I'd be curious to see what I've read over the past 8 months that fit in these years. Do you know when you started the challenge? 7y
Marchpane @drokka interesting point! Maybe a noticeable difference between early 40s and late 40s? 7y
Marchpane @christineandbooks I started on 4 October but only started posting on Litsy about a month later. 7y
Bklover Just learned about this one. May give it a try. I'll see what I have that fits from this year. Brilliant! 7y
quietlycuriouskate @Marchpane I've only just heard about this challenge (not been on Litsy long). Have I got this right: it's one book from each year 1920 - 2019 and the aim is to complete it sometime in 2019? 7y
Marchpane Hi @River_Voice 👋 You've got it exactly! It was designed to be a slow burn of a challenge. 7y
quietlycuriouskate Thanks @Marchpane Sounds like my kind of challenge: count me in! ☺ 7y
Marchpane @River_Voice Awesome! Look forward to seeing your posts 😊 Good luck 👍 7y

I enjoy crossing things off a list, so my #bookishresolutions all have to do with challenges:

✔️read 100 books for GR challenge
✔️complete #LitsyAtoZ challenge
✔️complete #MMDchallenge
✔️complete #ERmadlibs challenge
✔️read 35 books for #192019challenge

Wow.....it's going to be the year of reading challenges 📚📚

B.Reader It will be fun!! 7y
Marchpane Very ambitious! Good luck 🍀 7y
Chasing_Pages Wow, I want to up my GR challenge this year but I barely finished my goal of 42 this year. Wish I read faster. Good luck! 7y

I'm thrilled to bits to have people join me in this challenge! NB please feel free to SET YOUR OWN PARAMETERS 😁

🔹Read books published between 1920 and 2019

🔹pick your target - I'm aiming for all 100 years but you could pick read 50, or 2 per decade, whatever works

🔹I'm hoping to finish by April 2019, but a longer timeframe is fine. Again do what works for you.

🔹plan in advance, or not 😁

🔹please use tags #192019challenge & @Marchpane

BookishFeminist This looks fun, why not 😂 I won't say no to reading challenges this year 7y
Ksvz As a hint, look for original publish date as I found out last night as I tallied this year's haul. The book showed published in 2012 but was actually from 1946. 7y
Marchpane @Ksvz excellent tip, I've found on Goodreads it's easiest to go to the desktop site rather than the app to find original pub date. 7y

Marchpane @BookishFeminist Hooray!! So happy to have you with us 😊 7y

CocoReads What's one more challenge? At least it's a long running one! It's my year of challenges apparently. 😄📚 7y
KarenUK 🙌🙌🙌💕what a great challenge! 7y
Marchpane @Sweettartlaura exactly 😄 I've never flipped to the copyright page so much in my life! @cocoreads that's the spirit! @KarenUK Thank you, I'm excited 😊 7y
CocoReads I'm thinking at least 1 book from each year starting 1/1/17 and ending 12/31/19. 7y
LitHousewife What a fun idea! 7y
Bookworm83 I'm in for this challenge! I'm going to go for all 100 📚📚 7y
heatherkaz This sounds like so much fun! I don't know if I could do 100, but I'm down for challenging myself to a few per decade 7y
Michelle_mck I'm doing my birthday challenge this year, maybe i can incorporate into this for a broader challenge! That's for the inspo 7y
Marchpane @Bookworm83 @heatherkaz Yay! Welcome to the fun 👋 @Michelle_mck A few people have mentioned piggybacking off the birthday challenge too! 7y
DreesReads @Marchpane I have my spreadsheet ready! It's empty, because I don't plan anything. I am hoping to read 1 book for every year--and have requested a couple from the library, they'll be here next week. 7y
Sweettartlaura Just think of all the classics/award winners/etc. we now have a reason to make front & center the next few years😍 Yay!!!❤️ 7y

A personal reading challenge I set for myself, I'm going to try to read one book published in each year from 1920 to 2019! Why those dates:

🔹a milestone birthday coming up in 2019
🔹I wanted to include backlist from the 2000's, as well as the 20th century
🔹gives me three years to complete the challenge
🔹mostly, I like the symmetry of it: 1920:2019 😁

Got a favourite book? Please recommend it to me! And wish me luck!

PatriciaU You are in for a treat! I did a 100 Years.100 Books reading project in 2011 in honor of my library's centennial. I read one book from every year the library existed, and it was the most adventurous and wonderful reading I've ever done. There were so many excellent books published in those years that have been relatively forgotten. If you want to see any of books I read, you can go to my blog, http://itsallaboutthebook.org and search for 100 books. 7y
Marchpane @Notafraidofwords @Lindy Thank you both! I'm stacking books all over the place here! 7y
Marchpane @PatriciaU Awesome, I will check out your blog for sure! I'm hoping to both 'catch up' on some more well-known books, and discover some gems 🤓 7y
DreesReads Won the Pulitzer that year, I found it because it plays a part in 2011's Violets if March. I liked years of grace better--the language is a bit dated. 7y
shawnmooney What a great idea and a wonderfully ambitious project! 7y
Lindy Great project! I'm sure you will keep us posted. 😊 7y
Marchpane @JPeterson Thanks, that CS Lewis looks intriguing! @AudreyMorris Looks great and 1930s recs are very welcome! 7y
DebinHawaii Such a great project! It will be fun to see your posts. 👍📚❤️ 7y
Marchpane @Lindy I've already read True Grit and loved it, what a terrific suggestion @shawnmooney thanks, I'll be sure to post updates 😁 7y
Marchpane Cheers @DebinHawaii ! Everyone's comments have got me really excited about it! Still gonna read new releases too of course 😉 7y
JPeterson @Marchpane I read Till We Have Faces probably over 10 years ago, and still keep going back to it! 7y
storiesandstethoscopes I love this idea! I'll be celebrating my 21st birthday in 2019! Best of luck to you 😊 7y
KarenUK What a wonderful challenge! 1948 - 7y
Bluestocking I love this idea! I'll be 60 in January and I'm going to think about this as a way to mark the big year. 👍 7y
lovelybookshelf What a cool challenge!! 7y
DreesReads I turn 50 in 2019 so maybe I should consider joining you! 7y
Marchpane @KarenUK yes! I've been meaning to read that forever so it's perfect 👌 7y
Marchpane @AudreyMorris hey that would be great, we could be challenge buddies! 7y
Marchpane @Betty Stacked it! Great suggestion 👍 7y
LiteraryinLawrence What an awesome idea! 7y
Kimzey @Marchpane and @KarenUK I'll second I Capture the Castle. Recommend 2004 Pulitzer Prize winner 7y
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader I love challenges, plus I'll be 30 in 2019 ;) you can definitely count me in! 7y
Marchpane @Kimzey added it to my list, thank you 😊 @JulietteGF I made a hashtag if you want to join in: #192019challenge ! 7y
Cinfhen Great idea❣️I'm currently doing the #birthdaychallenge ~ basically you begin reading a book that was published in your birth year and continue in chronological order. My first book is kind of dragging.... 7y
Marchpane @Cinfhen cool, there'll be some overlap then with our challenges! Too bad your first one hasn't grabbed you 😟 I won't be going chronologically, just random order. 7y
Izai.Amorim Try one of Herman Hesse's books for early 20th European. Demian 1920 for example. A world gone forever. Klaus Mann's Mephisto is also wonderful (1936 I guess). The Nazis had just recently taken power but one could already see where it would end, if one wanted to. Leon Feuchtwanger's Success 1930 is also about this time. 7y
Redheadrambles I will be following this with great interest 7y
Redheadrambles I should contribute by saying for my own year of 1975 I recently read "Heat and Dust" the winner of the Booker prize for that year. It's a slim novel and I found it quite lovely especially if you like E.M Forster's "A passage to India" and also if you need a quick read from the 70s ? 7y
Marchpane @Redheadrambles Thanks for the suggestion! I've added it to my list. 7y
Marchpane @Izai.amorim thank you! Older books can be harder to find but hopefully I'll be able to find at least one of those 😀 7y
GlitteryOtters That is awesome! Next year is a milestone birthday for me, so I'm planning on doing the birthday challenge with 40 years of books, and I thought *i* was being ambitious...you have me beat! Will hit you up later (post Thanksgiving feast, possibly tomorrow) with some suggestions (I have a ton of books on the early end of your timeframe, so I'll throw some titles your way in case they are interesting to you) 7y
Marchpane @GlitteryOtters haha well it is a little daunting but I've three years to get it done and Litsy to keep me going 🤓 A few people are doing the birthday challenge so we can cheer each other on! Look forward to seeing your picks 👍 7y
Faibka Awesome idea!! I highly recommend one of the best books I've read which was published in 1965: 7y
Buddys_Momma What an interesting challenge! 7y
britt_brooke Creative idea! 👍🏻👍🏻 7y
GlitteryOtters Sorry I didn't get these to you sooner, things have been insanely busy here due to the holiday weekend (we weren't traveling so I thought it wouldn't be so insane, but I was wrong! 🙄🙄). I'll give you suggestions in roughly chronological order. All of these are books I'd rate 3.5 to 5+ stars out of 5, many are my favorites. Some are kids, some adults. Many are British, most of the rest are US pubbed. Dates are 1st publication dates in any country 7y
GlitteryOtters 1920: The Happy Foreigner by Enid Bagnold, Glinda of Oz by L. Frank Baum. 1921: Vera by Elizabeth Von Arnim. 1925: Vera by Elizabeth Von Arnim. 1926: Introduction to Sally by Elizabeth Von Arnim. 1928: The Twelve Chairs by Ilf & Petrov. 1929: Goodbye to All That by Robert Graves. 1930: Her Privates We by Private # 19022 (AKA Frederic Manning) & Not So Quiet by Helen Zenna Smith (one of my all time fave WWI-related books) 7y
GlitteryOtters Oops, forgot this one from 1922: The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim. Back to the Thirties...one last 1930 title: Miss Mike by E.H. Young. 1931: Skyscraper by Faith Baldwin, Poor Caroline by Winfred Holtby, The Brontës Went to Woolworths by Rachel Ferguson (one of my all time favorite books). 1932: Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder 7y
GlitteryOtters 1933: Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain, Frost In May by Antonia White. 1934: The Unpossessed by Tess Slesinger, Jasmine Farm by Elizabeth Von Arnim. 1935: Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. 1936: South Riding by Winifred Holtby, All the Dogs of my Life by Elizabeth Von Arnim. 1937: Ballet Shoes & Tennis Shoes, both by Noel Streatfeild (her 1st two books--she was very prolific from this year onward. If stumped for a book... 7y
GlitteryOtters ..in one of the subsequent years, check her bibliography (full one is online if you google it), you should be able to find a title by her for most of the next 40+ years). Also in 1937: On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder. 1938: The Squire by Enid Bagnold. 1939: One Pair of Hands by Monica Dickens. 1942: Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner & Emily Kimbrough (a fun, quick & easy read, one of my favorite travelogues) 7y
GlitteryOtters 1946: The Happy Prisoner by Monica Dickens. 1947: Sisters By a River by Barbara Comyns, Chatterton Square by E.H. Young. 1950: Our Spoons Came From Woolworths by Barbara Comyns, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. That is my 1920-1950 list. If you want any post 1950 books, let me know where you have gaps, I'll send you more titles-I find most people don't know before 1950 well, but know 1950+! 7y
GlitteryOtters Oh yes, almost every book listed here is either currently in print, has been in print somewhere in the past 20 years and/or was so widely printed by, like, Penguin or something that it is easy to find used copies for very little. If you are looking for late 1930s to late 1970s books, Monica Dickens wrote a ton & had many published by Penguin paperbacks. I haven't spent more than $2 USD when buying any of her books, even titles not published in US! 7y
Marchpane @GlitteryOtters WOW! Thank you SO much for all those recommendations! I will take some time to look through them all but sure to be some fantastic reads there. 😁 7y
GlitteryOtters Corrections to errors (I knew i couldn't type up that list without some typos or autocorrect fails...?): the 1925 Elizabeth Von Arnim book is Love, not Vera (whoops!) and autocorrect turned 1930 title Miss Mole into Miss Mike (I guess my phone has learned that I use the name Mike often, the word "mole", not so much ?) 7y
escapinginpaper I love this idea! 7y
