This book is a Pulitzer Prize winner. Truthfully, I tried and tried to get into the story, but just couldn't. For others, it might be a great read, but it just wasn't my style.

megnews I felt the same. Everyone‘s got different taste but I couldn‘t understand the appeal. 3w

Bailedbailed

I bailed with 100 pages to go. I figured I‘d read enough to be able to fully engage in our book club discussion. On the flip side, I was tired of trying to follow and engage in the meandering prose and I didn‘t even care how it ended, so I knew it was time to bail.

On the flip side, G spent 20 minutes reading excerpts from it tonight and was convinced she would like it more than me. 🤣

Beautiful reflection on life and faith, told through the letters of an aging, small-town pastor to his young son. Robinson's sentences are breathtaking, and I savored entire passages wrestling with how to live a faithful, spiritual life in the messiness of reality. I see why this is one of President Obama's favorites.

Mehso-so

I enjoyed parts of this book, and there were some thought-provoking parts, some sad parts and even some funny parts. However I found the theological elements difficult to read and understand, therefore only a so-so.

This fits for #iowa in #ReadingUSA2019. It‘s weeks since I added a state to my list - need to get a move on!

Graywacke I read this twice. First it was so-so for me too. Second time was a kind of “wow”. I never did take in the theology stuff - except maybe for some notes on his atheist brother. 7mo
aquariusnat A few years ago I read most of it and was kind of bored too. I intend to give it another chance . 7mo

She was born and raised in Idaho, but I feel like I can claim Marilynne Robinson as my favorite local author... she was a long-time professor at the Iowa Writers‘ Workshop at my alma mater, the University of Iowa, and I believe still lives in Iowa. Her Gilead books are set in Iowa as well.

I found an interview where she said Moby Dick was a favorite that influenced her.

My favorite of hers is Gilead. ❤️

The fictional writings of an elderly preacher to his young son. Married to his second wife late in life, and became a father to a son he won‘t be able to see come of age, Rev. John Ames shares tidbits of daily life as well as family history. This is one of those books with moments of brilliance and quiet musings to ponder. Chelsea.Poole @AllenTStClair @Lcsmcat it is seriously the easiest and most delicious recipe I do! BUT you must have fresh from the garden produce or it won‘t turn out even half as nice. I just slice up yellow squash and zucchini and a big juicy red tomato (as much as you want, I usually try to have equal amounts) place alternating in a casserole dish and sprinkle olive oil, herbs(also best if fresh), garlic powder moz. & parm. chs. Bake 375 until golden brown. 1y

Been long overdue on this title, and am happy to have finally read it. Nick Hornby said of the book in his review that it evoked the kind of Christianity few christians seem capable of embodying. Between this and her essays, I can say that Marilynne Robinson's perspective of theosophy is well worth exploring by anyone, religious or no.

I spent 90% of this book resentful at having it in my TBR. I was wrong. Know how something touches you in a way that you didn‘t realize you were holding your breath—so you find yourself suddenly taking a deep inhalation? That was the ending of this book for me. All the struggling I did to read this book built to a realization about how we all struggle to reconcile our faith against the trials we face in this world. This one took my breath away.

Cinfhen Beautiful review ❤️it‘s still on my TBR but now you‘ve made me want to read it 1y
AllenTStClair @Cinfhen Thank you! I won‘t lie...this book takes AWHILE to build. It was hard for me to keep reading. But when I got to the last 15-ish pages, my eyes welled up. Supremely moving. I guess it‘s up to each reader to decide if it was worth it. For me, it was. 1y
CindyE09 How religiously based is this book? I don‘t mind characters being religious, but I am put off when books have overwhelming religious messages in the narration. That‘s why I have never read this one though I have heard good things and it has been on my shelves for awhile. 1y
See All 9 Comments
AllenTStClair @CindyE09 It‘s pretty religious—but it‘s not trying to convert anyone. At least not in my opinion. But there are A LOT of Bible passages and “Bible-speak” in it. But, it really shows the folly in blind adherence to doctrine and the fallibility of religion and holy men. If it helps, I‘m not religious at all...but I still adored the messages. (edited) 1y

Leftcoastzen Awesome! I drew up a #GARBingo card , this is on it and may be next. 1y
AllenTStClair @Leftcoastzen Overall, I‘m still on the fence, halfway through...but this passage stood out. 1y
Leftcoastzen I finished her earlier one and admired the writing but still felt kinda meh. 1y

AllenTStClair @Leftcoastzen I think that may be my final thoughts when I‘m done. But we‘ll see... 1y
BookNAround Unpopular opinion but I find her books to be insomnia cures for me. 1y
AllenTStClair @BookNAround 🤣 I‘m struggling with this book, so we can be in the #unpopularopinion club together. 1y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Im so appreciating these comments. I tried one (which one was it 🤔) and it was just too Mayberry for me, if that makes sense. Too much “pull up a rocking chair on the porch and sit for a spell”. Nah, Im good. @BookNAround (edited) 1y
AllenTStClair @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I‘m about 65% done...and if I weren‘t so close to the end, I might consider bailing. 😬 1y
Zelma @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I was already uninterested but this description solidifies it for me. I always suspected that her writing is wonderful but stories were not for me. 1y

This #thisorthat was kinda hard. Had trouble deciding between essay collection/picture book and graphic novel/poetry—because the subject matter matters. But...here we are. 🤣

Currently reading "Gilead" by Marilynne Robinson.
I think it is going to be my best friend.
Also, I just got "Would you Rather" in the mail, so that's exciting!

Bailedbailed

Bailed!! Dropped it off in the neighborhood Free Little Library on my home from the pool. I don‘t mind serious reads at the pool, but I could tell this one is not for me. #GARbingo

AmyG I bailed too. 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Uh oh. Not a good sign for me. Maybe I should pull it off my shelf soon so I can decide. 😜 1y
LeeRHarry I couldn‘t finish this one either..., 1y
sudi I'm so glad i didn't pick this 😄 1y

Enjoying time to myself at the pool on the last day of school!

But I brought Gilead, which I just started, and I really don‘t like it. As I read, the words just turn into blah, blah, blah.

Someone tell me why I should give this book more time rather than dropping it at p. 20?

Alas, this is the only book I brought to the pool. 😫😩

TrishB Not read this one. The one I‘ve read of hers was bleak and probably not a pool read! 1y
Bklover Life‘s too short. Bail. 1y
4thhouseontheleft @TrishB This one isn‘t bleak. Faith is a major component of the story. That‘s not always an issue, but I‘m not a big fan of this variety, which seems to assume that the Christian faith is the only way to perceive the world. It‘s incredibly well written, but I am bored, bored, bored bored. Interestingly, most Pulitzer winners that I have read I haven‘t liked, and this book continues that trend. But I always love the Man Booker winners! 1y

Suzze I read the whole thing and never got into it. I don‘t know why so many readers loved it. 1y
Kaye Chuck it into the pool. That‘s the good thing about a kindle. Start one and it‘s not good, click on another. I usually bring at least 2 or 3 in the car, only because it‘s so hard to find one that holds my attention lately. 1y
TrishB Yeah, just bail! Life‘s too short!! 1y
ravenlee I generally don't like when faith in books is overbearing, usually at the expense of plot or character development. Bail and maybe try again another time (or just chuck it!). 1y
DivineDiana It took me awhile to get into the rhythm of this book. But once I did, I was overcome by its beauty. A rare ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me! But I agree with @TrishB that it‘s probably not a pool read. 😉 (edited) 1y
irre Bail. I didn‘t really like it. Very slow. 1y
