Britt-Marie Was Here
Britt-Marie Was Here | Fredrik Backman
For as long as anyone can remember, Britt-Marie has been an acquired taste. It's not that she's judgemental, or fussy, or difficult - she just expects things to be done in a certain way. A cutlery drawer should be arranged in the right order, for example (knives, forks, then spoons). We're not animals, are we? But behind the passive-aggressive, socially awkward, absurdly pedantic busybody is a woman who has more imagination, bigger dreams and a warmer heart than anyone around her realizes. So when Britt-Marie finds herself unemployed, separated from her husband of 20 years, left to fend for herself in the miserable provincial backwater that is Borg - of which the kindest thing one can say is that it has a road going through it - and somehow tasked with running the local football team, she is a little unprepared. But she will learn that life may have more to offer her that she's ever realised, and love might be found in the most unexpected of places. The number 1 European bestseller by the author of A Man Called Ove, Britt-Marie was Here is a funny, poignant and uplifting tale of love, community, and second chances.

Cinfhen Just read this and really loved it!!! Took a few chapters before I warmed up to Britt Marie now
Texreader @Cinfhen Thanks for the heads-up! I recall starting this book before and I think she annoyed me. (I have no idea where or when since I didn‘t own the book, maybe in a bookstore deciding whether to get it?) But now I‘ve read, and loved Ove with all my heart. I‘m more patient with this writer now. now

Britt Marie is a self proclaimed“nag-bag” but one that you can‘t help loving. As we slowly discover her childhood and path into adulthood it‘s easy to understand what makes Britt Marie tick. A story about loneliness, second chances, finding your voice & community, it gave me #AllTheFeels 🥰very similar to Eleanor Oliphant and Beartown 💕 And if you love footie then this book is a total SCORE⚽️🏆So good!!!!! 👇🏽

Cinfhen @TrishB @arlenefinnigan have you read this one??? I think for love of the game you BOTH #NeedToRead this book!!! 1d

Librarybelle Great! And, @TrishB ...I‘m not a big fan either (said in quiet voice). I have been told, though, that I must read this one, as it‘s different than his others. 1d

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds good. The only Backman I‘ve read is Ove. 1d
Cinfhen @Nikki_E I think that‘s initially why I skipped this book - I really didn‘t like My Grandmother and I remember I hated Britt Marie in the story but now it all makes sense!!! I think you‘d both like it @Librarybelle @BarbaraTheBibliophage 1d
Cinfhen It did take me 8 chapters before I got caught up in the story @Crazeedi but once I did, I had to keep listening 1d
TrishB @Librarybelle I guess we need to make our own mind up! 1d
erzascarletbookgasm It took me a while to warm up to Britt-Marie. I loved Beartown, Ove was okay for me. This one, I‘m glad it turned around after her childhood is revealed. Glad it‘s a Pick for you too! 22h

Britt-Marie is socially awkward and she can be annoying as she hates a mess. She has a great imagination, big dreams and a warm heart. Backman's characters are very rich. I loved Ove and Britt-Marie is up there too. This book made me laugh out loud. She has lots of wisdom and I loved all the many uses for baking soda. I look forward to reading more of Backman's books as he is truly an excellent writer. Highly recommended!

People call Britt-Marie a ‘nag-bag‘. She‘s certainly strange & I did not warm up to her immediately. Her past is slowly revealed (why she has a fixation for cleaning is also explained) as she came to a town with not much hope & pride left except for a group of young soccer players. I‘m not a big fan of Backman‘s writing style here but I liked his take on criticising some real issues👇

Another fantastic story by Backman, although I admit Brit-Marie did remind me of the muggle version of Dolores Umbridge. She did grow a lot and change some. I learned a bunch of cleaning hacks with bicarbonate of soda or baking soda as we call it in the States 😸

Britt-Marie is annoying and clueless. She‘s one of those people who makes you want to bang your head against a wall. Then she‘s thrown into a poverty stricken town that lives for football. She adapts and becomes a quirky yet nurturing woman and while I never really root for her, I do want the people around her to do well. And that is why I kept reading and enjoyed the story.

Oh wow. This book packs some punch. When Britt-Marie leaves her husband, due to his wandering affections toward another woman, she finds herself alone and without all of the things that keep her grounded and safe. No more balcony. No more well organised cutlery draw. No more being a passenger in the car. So she takes a temporary job in Borg. And from there, magic springs! A bold story of how one person can make a massive difference. Loved it.

Buechersuechtling Thanks a lot for this review. Do you do it, I may give this author another try – even if I decided long time before (after “Ove”) to not read any more of his books. Hopefully I find it in my library‘s stock. 5mo

She may not have found #TrueLove in the traditional sense (screw you, Kent!) but she did find it when she boarded the “Hot Mess Express” to Borg! Such a great assortment of characters. Also, who knew bicarbonate of soda had SO MANY uses?!

Thanks for the tag @avanders.
I've also read a lot of really good books so far this year, but I've narrowed it down to the #top6reads.
Britt Marie is still by far my favorite of this year, possibly my favorite since I was a kid and Watership Down.
I've loved following this hashtag because I've found new people to follow & new books to read..

I HATED Britt-Marie when I read My grandmother asked me to tell you she‘s sorry, but you learn to (slowly) love and understand her here.

#BookFitnessChallenge Week 4 check-in

I didn‘t get to 10000 steps every day. Had a couple excellent days & a couple I-could‘ve-done-more days.

More importantly, my nutrition is better. I‘m being more conscientious & making better choices.

I am loving my 10 min AM yoga. Helps me clear my sleepy head and warms up my muscles to get me focused for the day.

Audiobooks: 4/6, so right on track.

bewareofwords That‘s great! Sounds like you‘re making great progress. 👏🏽 7mo
TheSpineView Great job! 7mo

After reading My Grandmother, I had to go back and reread (or listen to) Britt-Marie. ❤️

Audiobook 4/6 #BFC #BookFitnessChallenge

Read4life I have enjoyed all of his books I‘ve read. I think the audiobooks are exceptionally well done. 💙 8mo
wanderinglynn @Read4life Agree. Joan Walker is a fabulous narrator. 8mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Britt-Marie was endearing and a pinch neurotic. Back man sure knows how to create a feast of characters and can make a boring town interesting.

A busy weekend kept me from finishing To Say Nothing of the Dog until tonight, but it was very fun (and completely different from the well-wriiten but emotionally taxing Doomsday Book), so I think I'm going to order some more books by Connie Willis!
In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy visiting with Britt-Marie again... she was quite the character in My Grandmother Asked Me...

wanderinglynn I read Britt-Marie last year, but just now listening to the audio book of My Grandmother. I wondered if it was the same character. 9mo
EastWind76 @wanderinglynn it is! She's something else, isn't she?? 9mo

Clwojick I still need to read this one. I just gave a copy to my mother in law too. I love Backman 9mo
kellyann28 @Clwojick It's a good read! Follows the same trend as Ove, for some funny humor and sad bits as well! 9mo
JackOBotts Backman is pretty great. As are his characters and their journeys. 🤗 9mo
