The book is far better than the movie. While the dialogue can make you cringe, admittedly I learned much about this time period- peoples, places, origins of good/bad/ugly customs & events. The character story of Scarlett is chilling and sad and .... can touch home with anyone who loses their way or gets caught up in false pretenses. Rhett is an interesting character- all too real before his time. I‘m so glad I read this for so, so many reasons!

1. Gone with the Wind
2. Scarlett had little use these days for honesty in herself, but the less she valued it in herself the more she was beginning to value it in others. [I came here to post this blurb, still trying to find my way in LitsyLand, thought I‘d try one of these!]

A book that portrays the KKK as a victim and enslaved people as being thrilled and happy to serve a pretty mistress from a good family is not historically accurate, but it is racist AF.

Today‘s Prompt

Ghost: Name a character you would like to visit you as a ghost.

This prompt confused me lol. I don‘t know if they mean like a dead character visit that visits you or just a character in general. I choose Scarlet O‘Hara. Of course, she didn‘t die in the book, but I guess since it took place in the Civil War she would technically be dead now.🤷‍♀️

My mother had told me how during her time in convent school, Gone with the Wind was the most circulated book among the girls in the dorm. It has been on my list ever since. I read it recently, during my trip to Melbourne.

Most people fail to see any redeeming qualities in Scarlett, and for much of the book, I felt so too. But by the end, I came to appreciate her resilience and how she willed things into happening. Terrible taste in men though!

I spent two months reading this book section by section between other books. Overall, i enjoyed it very much. The writing is detailed and the characters come to life with their individual personalities. Of course, there is a lot of casual racism included in the book, but that was the way things were in this period, and i don‘t fault the author for capturing the sentiment of the day. Not sure if i loved or hated the ending.

I am enjoying this story of Scarlett and the Civil War from the confederate perspective, but occasionally the author throws in a line like this and i don‘t know what to do:

“Her kind black face sad with the uncomprehending sadness of a monkey‘s face.”

THAT IS REALLY HOW IT ENDS?

I can‘t even explain my feelings for this book. So well-written and powerful, but the racism is appalling. Scarlett is infuriatingly stupid and selfish but also so strong. Poor weak Melly is the best of them all. I feel like the book is pro-confederacy, but I also wonder if Mitchell wasn‘t trying to show just how backwards it was.

I‘m very conflicted, but I loved this novel, despite the end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

phyhill I think all the horrible bits would be easier to digest if Margaret Mitchell had actually lived through the Civil War. How do you review this?

I want to go straight back to the beginning and start reading it again! Even though Scarlett is a piece of work, I loved her determination, her relationships, the conversations, & experiencing the oh-so-rapidly-changing world through her eyes. And it‘s made me want to read contemporary writing from the Reconstruction era, through other eyes (suggestions pls?)

RachelO I‘d expected racism, of course - but hadn‘t realised the scale of it, or the impact of hearing it from the narrator, rather than the characters.

This was a holiday read for me, which is obviously the way to go with chunksters. It‘s made me want to dive into some mord of the books I‘ve been putting off because of their size.

I‘m at a loss for words over how to feel about this book.

It is horribly racist. Scarlet is a terrible character. She‘s selfish, mean, and childish.

However, this book broke my heart a little. It has a cast of characters I won‘t soon forget. It is possibly one of the most interesting epic novels I‘ve ever read. I devoured it. Despite its flaw, I‘m almost certain, when the dust in my brain settles, that this will be a favorite novel.

Samplergal Yep. That‘s about right. 😂 6mo

I‘m taking a 90 minute orange theory class at ten am and then after will be devoted to meal prep and CPA studying.

Sneaking in coffee and book while my breakfast cooks.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Excellent goals!! Fitness of body and mind! Meanwhile, I‘m a total slack off...but I was a Finance girl who worked out at Gold‘s gym back in the day. Keep that up, it will serve you well👌🏽 7mo
rretzler Good luck with your CPA exam. I was a CPA for 30+ years before retirement. 7mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @JanuarieTimewalker13 Thanks! I love to spend my free time at the gym almost as much as I love to spend it with books. Such a great way to de stress. 7mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @rretzler Thank you! It feels overwhelming right now. Like I‘ll never learn or remember enough to pass. But people do it everyday. So I just keep working at it. 7mo
rretzler Just keep studying and take lots of practice exams, if you can. I‘m sure you‘ll do fine. 7mo

(Day 25 - #DontGoBreakingMyHeart)

*As Ashley breaks Scarlett‘s heart, she, in turn, breaks Rhett‘s...and finally Rhett breaks Scarlett‘s, in a way. But then, she‘ll always have Tara!

Reviewsbylola The greatest love story of all time!! 7mo
Mdargusch I was going to use this one too but I use it too much. 😂 7mo
gradcat @Reviewsbylola I think it‘s an example of great heartache! Ahhh, so sad, yet kind of triumphant in the end...”After all, tomorrow is another day!” 7mo

gradcat @Mdargusch Is there ever too much “Gone With the Wind?” 🌬 😂 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm Haha! I was going to use this too! 7mo
Cinfhen Ha!!! If it‘s not crazy Amy from Gone Girl than it‘s crazy Scarlett @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola 7mo
Mdargusch You‘re so right @Cinfhen ! 7mo
gradcat @erzascarletbookgasm I guess we think alike...sorry I took your idea, though... 😘 7mo
gradcat @Cinfhen Yes, crazy Amy is a particularly crazy type, isn‘t she? Good for many (crazy) occasions! 😂 7mo
emilyhaldi Love this love story 💞 7mo
Reviewsbylola Pretty sure I could make GWTW work for just about any prompt. 😆 @cinfhen 7mo
gradcat @Reviewsbylola I know, right? Don‘t be mad at me today! Wait until you see what I did for Rick Astley‘s song! 😏 7mo
gradcat @emilyhaldi Me too...it just never gets old! 7mo

Ruthiella I was curious about the UK cover of GWTW you mentioned. That is pretty neat!😀 7mo
ReadingEnvy @Ruthiella rather clever! 7mo
Lcsmcat That‘s a Cather I haven‘t read yet. 7mo
ReadingEnvy @Lcsmcat me too, looking forward to it? 7mo
Centique I‘m in love with the cover of that Willa Cather. There‘s a bunch of Vintage Classics I am dying to buy because of these great retro covers. My budget is holding me back...just! 7mo

Reading Envy Podcast Episode 149: TBR Explode!

Jenny kicks off a short bonus episode with a joint readalong announcement, and covers three months of her TBR Explode project.

ShyBookOwl Ooh! Never heard of this podcast 8mo
RachelO Oooh, good! I‘ll be joining you for the readalong - I tried (unsuccessfully) to get through this on my own last year. With my readalong success rate (maybe 10%) and my chunkster-finishing rate (maybe 3%), what could possibly go wrong?! 8mo
ReadingEnvy @ShyBookOwl I hope you give it a try! I've had a lot of Litsy peeps on as guests 8mo

ReadingEnvy @RachelO I've never tried reading it but I may regret the edition I bought - a more compact size but what looks like tiny text, ope 8mo
ShyBookOwl @ReadingEnvy neat! I will 8mo
RachelO @ReadingEnvy I‘m away for part of May, so have invested in a Kindle version as well (I‘m not lugging that round Europe with me!). I might also have to confess to buying a page magnifier last month, which feels incredibly old lady, but honestly! Who wants to read print that small?! 8mo
