Black House
Black House | Peter May
From acclaimed author and television dramatist Peter May comes the first book in the Lewis Trilogy--a riveting mystery series set on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, a formidable and forbidding world where tradition rules and people adhere to ancient ways of life. When a grisly murder occurs on the Isle of Lewis that has the hallmarks of a killing he's investigating on the mainland, Edinburgh detective and native islander Fin Macleod is dispatched to see if the two deaths are connected. His return after nearly two decades not only represents a police investigation, but a voyage into his own troubled past. As Fin reconnects with the places and people of his tortured childhood, he feels the island once again asserting its grip on his psyche. And every step forward in solving the murder takes him closer to a dangerous confrontation with the tragic events of the past that shaped--and nearly destroyed--Fin's life. "The Blackhouse" is a thriller of rare power and vision that explores the darkest recesses of the soul."

For me this book had too much back story to much looking back to his childhood, I know that this was important otherwise the novel wouldn't have made as much sense but I feel like their should have been more on the actual investigation and more on the murder. I did find it hard to keep up between reading the past and reading what was currently happening in the novel.

I really enjoyed this one. I listened to the audio book and loved hearing it read with the Scottish accent. It's the first book in the Lewis trilogy and I am interested to read/hear the next one. A great plot with excellent character development. Crime/mystery is not my usual genre either! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Freebie from libro.fm, thought it'd be a good way to see what I thought of this genre on audio. Didn't care for the book at all; it jumps between 1st and 3rd person for no reason. Enjoyed the 1st person flashbacks about life on a small Scottish island for a while but the treatment of all the female characters got really gross. The 3rd person present day murder investigation was a total McGuffin.

AnneFindsJoy darn, too bad! I downloaded that freebie too! Now it will get added to the rest of freebies that I've never read/listened to because I think they're going to be “mediocre“ at best reading experiences. 6mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @AnneFindsJoy glad I could save you some time! I did really like the Mother's Group short story if you picked that one up as well. 6mo

@jhod I'm so sorry - my horrendous book slump has caused me to forget about sending you the next installment of #whodunituk. I'm so so sorry. I promise (hand on heart) that I'll post it on Monday.
I also want to apologise to @Christine11 and @RachelO because I can't commit to another round of #LMPBC.
And if anyone finds my reading mojo, please send it to me. I'm feeling kind of lost without it 😭😭

jhod Don't worry! Hope you get out of your slump soon... 7mo
RachelO Hi Helen! Hope your mojo returns soon. As Jess and I are both running late anyway (sorry! I‘ll get Hill House back to you this week, honest!), and @Christine11 sounds mega-busy, we wondered whether it would help to just pause this month, and start again next month? No pressure, of course, if you just want to stop. What do you both think? @jhod 7mo

Thank you @Caroline2 for putting this on my radar for #newyearwhodis. I absolutely loved it. Undoubtedly one of the most well written mysteries I‘ve read in a LONG time.

I loved the desolate atmosphere, the deep character studies, and the expertly paced unraveling of the mystery. And the last paragraph brought tears to me eyes. I will be adding the next book in the series to my TBR.

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yey! 👏👏👏 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB Should get Whiteout and Echoes in the beginning of the week. Ready to start Whiteout immediately when it gets here. How far are you with Echoes? 10mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We should be finishing part 2 tonight but I‘m behind on it. 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Got the books for Feb. how does it work? When do we read them? 10mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We tend to read three books a month. One usually starting in the first week of the month, the second starting mid month with the aim to finish before the 19th, and a third which we vote on in the last week of the month. The voting page usually goes up in he last week of the previous month. We usually read them over five days with questions posted daily, sometimes do it over 4 or 6 days depending on the length of the book. @EadieB (edited) 10mo
Andrew65 Forgot to say we tend to read the third book in the last week of the month, for example we are starting The Restless Dead tomorrow. 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I am now checking the books and requesting the ones the library doesn‘t have! @EadieB 10mo
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 Damn, should have been active earlier. There is a free copy, but can‘t get to that library tomorrow. My library system has 63 libraries, and I can request all 3,4 million books for free to the library of my choice. It just takes a few days. 10mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Just bear in mind we are part way through the series with the 2 books posted for each month. Because we are current,y reading so many Series it‘s usually 3-4 months if not more between books in the series, so will give you time to catch up in the series if you want to. You can see we are reading the second Lacey Flint series in May. We try to read a mixture of crime books and adventure / thriller books. 10mo
Andrew65 The vote is for a standalone as we are already reading so many series! Each person can nominate up to two books and when we vote everyone gets two votes. 10mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads What a great library system. If we order a book even from a neighbouring library it costs us 55p. Not a lot but not free! 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Sometimes the library gets the books immediately. Sometimes overdrive needs to figure out the rights for Finland. Sometimes they don‘t get the books. Sometimes the book can be in Finnish/Swedish. Complicated! 10mo
Andrew65 Most probably be reading The Restless Dead Saturday - Wednesday so if talking about that book there will still be time to catch up. 😊 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 5 years ago it was 50 cents. I save a lot of money now! We should get a nationwide elibrary this year, with every single ebook we have in the country! 10mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Definitely, our library systems are creaking badly due to the cuts over the last few years. (edited) 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Saturday Feb 2? I would get it by then! 10mo
Andrew65 If you are talking about The Restless Dead that starts tomorrow. 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Too late. Hate when this happens! Ah well, we‘ve got Mo, Jane and Adrian. Will join Kate on LT. Plus, Susanna, when it comes to Hisfic. Should we do a triple read thing with hisfic as well? I feel we have so many options out there we have not read!!! @EadieB 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Forgot SJ Parris. I guess we only need one more then! 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Or is it enough that we have all.the.follet. stand alone a? 10mo
Andrew65 Think we may have enough at the moment. 10mo
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 Getting old? Giving up? 🤔😂 10mo
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Possibly both! But possibly also being a realist as I am behind on a few books at the moment. Need o make great progress on them this weekend during the #24B4Monday Readathon 10mo
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Happens. I need to learn to bail. It‘s against my nature. Reading a book from every single country can be a drag at times, and I‘ve read some books I would never ever choose if it wasn‘t for the challenge. 10mo
Tove_Reads @EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m trying to use LT. Not sure I‘m really getting it yet. 10mo
EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘ve noticed! Doing good! Takes time to get used to. I‘ve read other Peter May books but somehow missed this trilogy, set in the Outer Hebrides. I loved the atmosphere, the characters, the secrets. Can you ever escape your past? Detective Macleod returns to his native island to solve a murder but ends up facing his own demons too. 🎧 Peter Forbes‘s performance was terrific and I loved hearing how the Gaelic is pronounced. Looking forward to book 2 (w/ a wee dram & shortbread)

Day 10 #AdventRecommends
This is more a recommendation for a trilogy (it is really part of one big story) rather than a book. The Lewis Trilogy is one of my favourite trilogies. Love the rural feel of these books and the very feel of being on the Isle of Lewis. Throughly recommend all three books and tagged the first book in the trilogy. The Chess Men though (book 3) delivers one of the biggest shocks I know in books, left my chin on the floor!

rwmg I've got an omnibus of the trilogy on my virtual TBR shelf 11mo

A hesitant pick. I didn't like some of the chapters that went into Fin's childhood memories (although I understand why they are in there) & some of them felt unnecessary to the plot. It also felt like it took an age to get to the solving of the crime, (the book, for me, has a slow start), but once it got interesting I couldn't stop reading. It's also the first #whodunituk book I've managed to guess the correct killer for. 4 ⭐

This is one of the best murder mystery books I have ever read! The plot was fast paced, dark & unpredictable. The characters are all fascinating, well written and I feel like I know them! The setting of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland is richly described; now I‘m dying to go visit it! As for the writing, it is rich, profound and completely absorbing!! I loved this book so much & I can‘t wait to read the rest in the series! #whodunituk

This month‘s #whodunituk selection was The Blackhouse by Peter May. This book is the first of a trilogy of murder mysteries set in the Scottish Hebridean Isle of Lewis.

The island is beautifully described, so much so that I hope to travel there some day. The story didn‘t really hold water for me, but I still feel enriched to learn about such a beautiful place!

Thanks for choosing this book, @thegirlwiththebookishcandle . Off to @Caroline2 😊.

I‘m in China at the moment (on a school trip) and Litsy hasn‘t been working, but it is now so I‘m catching up! Anyway, really enjoyed this book and will definitely read the next two. Love love love the rugged Scottish Island scenery which is why I love the series Shetland as well. Peter May is another of my favorite authors and I have read every book he has written I enjoyed this beautifully written book very much. It was an interesting view of an isolated island and its habitants. The characters were memorable and the story was a definite page-turner. The ending was not expected and a complete surprise. I look forward to reading the other books in the trilogy (#2 The Lewis Man and #3 The Chessman)

arubabookwoman I loved this series! 2y
EadieB @arubabookwoman I know it‘s great! Did you ever read his Enzo Files which takes place in China? Or his standalones; I‘ll keep you safe, coffin road, cast iron, entry island and runaway? They are all great books! (edited) 2y

Okay this was a very well done mystery. Finn a detective with Edinburgh police department in mourning over the death of his son is forced to return to his home the Isle of Lewis after many years to participate in a murder investigation. While on the isle he is forced to confront the ghosts of his past in the form of friends his has abandoned, locals who seem more aware of his past than he is, and a woman who he may still love.

JazzFeathers It does sound very intriguing 2y
Oblomov26 @JazzFeathers it is very good, but I would say it does not involve a lot of detecting and no action. Much more about a character confronting his past and the effects of his actions upon the people that he left behind. 2y
Andrew65 I loved this trilogy and book 3 has an incredibly jaw dropping moment in it that I didn‘t see coming! 2y

#Black Has to be the first book in my favourite trilogy, which is the Lewis Trilogy by Peter May. The first book is called (appropriately) The Blackhouse. #Rocktober

Cinfhen You are a masterclass reader!!! 🙌🏻 2y
Cathythoughts I like the look of this book 📖 2y
Andrew65 @Cathythoughts It is a great trilogy, and the third book of the series gave me one of the biggest shocks in literature, with an event I never saw coming! I love Peter May's writing and that is his very best. I also loved the following standalone which is great if you need a Canada book for a challenge. 2y

Thank you for the tag @LeahBergen I miss doing these photo challenges. Had to do some digging, but was able to find 5 I hope are successful #FiveStarPredictions

I haven't seen who has been tagged so I'm going to leave off annoying people 😂 But I will say, this was fun.

LeahBergen My husband loved The Long Ships (but I haven't read it yet). I also have The Blackhouse waiting for me. Great picks! 2y
drokka @LeahBergen I've had the Long Ships for years, I really need to start reading the books I've got, I'm beginning to think I'm the one losing out by not enjoying them (edited) 2y
Owlizabeth Tigana was the book that got me to admit I was a fantasy junkie. 💜💜💜 2y

Overall very good. I liked the atmosphere of the island and the tension of the close-quarters environments. I would maybe class this as a thriller more than a mystery; it's more about one man's past secrets than a whodunnit. Looking forward to reading the second book.

rabbitprincess I also liked how skilfully May revealed the truth about what happened on the island. There had been no hints in Fin's earlier narration, but when you think back on it, things click into place. 2y
RidgewayGirl I've got this on my tbr. Sounds like i'll like it. 2y
rabbitprincess @RidgewayGirl I hope you do! 😊 2y

#bookanddinner, rainy Sunday edition. Fish and chips with extremely yummy pink lemonade from Bill's, a restaurant with locations in Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay.

TrishB We have a Bill's too in Liverpool. That's my husbands name so we like to buy things from there with his name on! 2y
rabbitprincess @TrishB There's one in Liverpool? I know where I'm going for dinner next time I am there! 😄 I bought a tin of tea for a friend to go with some Doctor Who merch I bought her (Bill being the name of last season's companion). 2y

Up late reading because I'm getting a cold and can't sleep properly ☹️ And naturally I start to get a cold right before a day trip on a coach tour! Hope there's a chemist with cold meds somewhere along the way.

Mimi28 Hope you feel better!! ❤️❤️😊😊 2y
LauraBrook I'm sorry you're getting sick! There has to be a pharmacy somewhere so you can get some medication. Hope you feel better soon so you can enjoy the coach trip! 2y

May beskriver väldigt levande landskapet och livet på öarna i Norra Skottland. Dessutom en mycket bra deckare.

This crime novel, set on the Isle of Lewis, was a thrift shop find and still on my TBR. Any fans? #HomeByTheSea #RockinMay

Oryx Yes. I don't read lots of crime, but have this on audio book, and it was a pretty good story. Slow reveal, and really interesting to learn about life in a remote place. 3y
TrishB Have on my kindle but not yet read any! 3y

I truly enjoyed this character driven mystery set on Lewis Island in the Hebrides of Scotland. The descriptions of the landscapes and the people made this a quick and enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this! It was a mystery, but it was more about the main character coming to terms with things from his past. I will definitely read the next in the series.
