Miller's Valley
Miller's Valley: A Novel | Anna Quindlen
In a small town on the verge of big change, a young woman unearths deep secrets about her family and unexpected truths about herself. Filled with insights that are the hallmark of Anna Quindlens bestsellers, Millers Valley is an emotionally powerful story about a family you will never forget. For generations the Millers have lived in Millers Valley. Mimi Miller tells about her life with intimacy and honesty. As Mimi eavesdrops on her parents and quietly observes the people around her, she discovers more and more about the toxicity of family secrets, the dangers of gossip, the flaws of marriage, the inequalities of friendship and the risks of passion, loyalty, and love. Home, as Mimi begins to realize, can be a place where its just as easy to feel lost as it is to feel content. Millers Valley is a masterly study of family, memory, loss, and, ultimately, discovery, of finding true identity and a new vision of home. As Mimi says, No one ever leaves the town where they grew up, even if they go. Millers Valley reminds us that the place where you grew up can disappear, and the people in it too, but all will live on in your heart forever. Mimi Miller narrates the story of her life in a place that is bound to disappear, because the government needs it as a reservoir in a water management project and slowly but surely floods it.
What is the biggest fear of most inhabitants turns out to be not that important after all, because so much has changed in the intervening years.
Mimi is a great observer of herself, her family and the community in this quietly, powerful novel.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Ok, that‘s good to know!! Thank you. I remember one thing from one of her books, don‘t remember the ones I read, but I read at least 2 (she was a fellow Hoboken resident back in the day, not sure now, I moved), and it was something like this: the greatest guy (the ones who help out and are good) is basically just an average woman. That struck me. Because it‘s true. If a guy looks after anyone, he‘s a great guy, but you never hear anyone praise a 2y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Woman for the same work. It‘s expected of them. 2y
Lizpixie I just commented on your first post! I‘m so happy you liked it lovely🙌♥️ 2y
BarbaraBB @JanuarieTimewalker13 I may have read that one too, it sounds familiar somehow. And you‘re right about expectations of women! 2y
JanuarieTimewalker13 It was AQ that made me aware of that. I just accepted what society spoon fed me. That‘s a book I can say was eye opening. And luckily, I was still relatively young (32) when this aha moment kicked in. 2y

We had our monthly meeting of the #OmnivorousBookClub tonight 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Held at one of our branches, we always get a great turn-out from patrons. Tonight‘s theme was “Books Set in Pennsylvania”! Mine was the tagged book and “Imaginary Friend”, the former set in the eastern part of the state, and the latter set in the western part.

#LitsyLovesLibraries

Scochrane26 My library does a traditional book club that I attend monthly. Then, they do Books & Bites, but I usually can‘t attend because of work (it‘s during the day). They make a podcast for that one, too. They talk about books along a theme & share recipes that go along w/ each book. 3y

#MayMovieMagic #WhenTheLeveeBreaks #BeatleMaynia #CarryThatWeight Mimi Miller is reflecting on her life as she looks back to the year the US government decides to flood her family land creating a diversion that will ultimately become a reservoir. As the river is allowed in, dampening the ground, loosening ties, it seems to drown people little by little forcing secrets to float up to the surface. A quiet but powerful story of home and belonging.

Finished this just in time for #bookclub tomorrow evening. loved it. It‘s a wonderful story told in a very non-dramatic way. This is Mimi‘s coming of age story, the daughter of a farmer and nurse who live in a valley their ancestors have inhabited for the past 200 years. This valley experiences flooding often and the government intervenes. A story of home, family, perseverance, secrets, and most definitely love. There were tears on my part!

One thing I would have liked fleshed out was the relationship between Mimi's mother and her sister. There is a plot twist that touches on perhaps why they had a tumultuous relationship, but I felt like this didn't get enough time and development and could've really added to the story, especially in the beginning. A slow burn. Like other reviewers, I found the novel hard to get into because of its pace. Stick with it, you will be glad you did.

Well, that was... quiet. This was my first book by Quindlen and, although I don't regret the time I spent reading it, it will likely be my last. Her writing style here was folksy and sort of matter-of-fact. The book focused on a woman reflecting on her life on a farm. Even when something life-changing happened, it came across as mundane. I bet some people would really connect more with the storytelling style than I did.

Texreader But not me. Glad for your honest review. I don't do slow very well. 6y

This is a lovely, quiet, slow-burning story of a small-town girl's life over decades. There are lots of open-ended and incomplete stories, and Quindlen does a lovely job of tackling sex, aging parents, evolving relationships, abortion, and more. It's been a couple months, but already this book is fading from my mind. Still, I enjoyed it and I'd reread it. #RockinMay Day 6 This is a quiet story told in first person narration. Mimi Miller has lived in a #smalltown her entire life and she slowly unveils her story spanning several decades. There's births & deaths, illnesses and celebrations, family secrets and shared moments. If you want an "acoustic" read, striped down ~ nothing fancy yet simply refined , you'll enjoy this short meaningful story.

This was such a lovely story of the bonds of family and the draw of that place you call home, even when you have been away for so long. My favorite quote: "...no one ever really leaves the town where they grew up, not really, even if they go." Anna Quindlen writes with such realness and depth, and I could identify with so many parts of this family's story. So glad I read this. Now, to start adding more of her novels to my TBR list. ?

Miller's Valley: A Novel | Anna Quindlen
post image

August reading stats! I had a great month. Eleven isn't the most books I've read in a month but I'm fine with it. I read so many fantastic books that I didn't actually dislike any of them, so picking a least favorite was hard. Likewise, I struggled to choose just one favorite. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was a very close second!

BookishTrish But Miller's Valley though. I love how it ended without tying everything up nicely. 6y
