Wives and Daughters | Elizabeth Gaskell
post image

One of my favorites #setinasmalltown, Elizabeth Gaskell had a genius for capturing the foibles of a small community. And this is another for my #FolioFreaks. I just wish they had done Cranford in these editions! #maybookflowers

Reviewsbylola I can't wait to read this! I loved Cranford. 3y
Moray_Reads @Reviewsbylola It's a toss-up for me whether I love Cranford or Wives and Daughters more. I also recommend the audiobooks narrated by Prunella Scales, they're wonderful! 3y
saresmoore Great pick and a beautiful edition! I haven't tried the audiobooks, but that sounds like a great idea. 3y

Chappell writes southern fiction at its most poignant and most humorous. His character descriptions make you feel like you're sitting on the front porch watching all the shenanigans ensue in this tiny North Carolina town. The author's love of NC and the nuances of southern life endear and entertain. Must read, especially if you're in need of perspective, humor and a dash of cheer. #setinasmalltown #fiction #southernlit

Titania This book and the other 3 books in Chappell's tetrology are treasures. 3y
cathysaid @Titania Agreed. ❤️ all of them! 3y

The Magician's Lie | Greer Macallister

Pickpick

5/5 With a nod to #aliasgrace by #margaretatwood Macallister crafts a tale that questions the guilt of a woman accused of bloody murder in 1905. Known for cutting men in half on stage, the Amazing Arden is the prime suspect when her husband's body is found cleaved by an ax. Her freedom may hinge on the story she tells the small-town sheriff, the favor she might grant him, or her ability to escape his jail. Whoopie's #botm choice #setinasmalltown

Aunt Dimity's Good Deed | Nancy Atherton
post image

For the #setinasmalltown prompt, I decided to make a book quilt of the Aunt Dimity novels. They are set in the small village of Finch in the Cotswolds of England. I love reading these light, cozy mysteries and sometimes wish I could visit Lori and her gossipy, but mostly well-meaning, neighbours. And the recipes, of which one is always included at the end of the book, are an added bonus! #day4 #photoadaynov16

#picaday day 4 #setinasmalltown is a book that pulled me out of a reading funk. Even though it isn't my normal genre, Where the Heart Is was a powerful book that moved right into my heart.

#photoadaynov16 Day 4: #setinasmalltown

Small town novels set me on edge - everything is more tense since I personally know the stakes of being the outsider in a tight-knit community

#photoadaynov16 #setinasmalltown #romantsy

I like Lucy Dillon, mainly because her romances focus more on the characters themselves with the romance as a sort of secondary plot, and seem to all involve dogs!

This one is set in a small town, where the main character works in a bookshop. I loved the majority of the story, but do not like part of the ending. When it comes to main characters, I'm very particular about who deserves to be with them!

Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop . . . [s]omehow it was hotter then... Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o‘clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum. . . . #photoadaynov16#setinasmalltown @RealLifeReading Immersed in co-teaching this novel right now so Maycomb seemed a fitting choice!
