(Day 19 - #WhenTheLeveeBreaks)

*If you‘re a fan of the blues, then perhaps you already know about Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie. They are the musicians who wrote & recorded this song in 1929. Their lyrics are about the massive floods and ensuing chaos caused by the “Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.”

marleed Oh, you did good on this challenge! 9mo
Cinfhen Fabulous collage!!!! Well done 👍🏻 9mo
rohit-sawant Fantastic! 👏🏼👏🏼 9mo

Cathythoughts Did you see their us a HBO production of His Dark Materials coming out soon. I hope I can get it on telly ♥️👍🏻 9mo
TrishB @Cathythoughts I‘m keeping my fingers crossed it‘s better than the film! 9mo

Drowned World | J G Ballard
post image

One of my favorite Ballard novels, the tagged book takes place in a tropical London that is mostly underwater due to rising sea levels. I read this & Hello America, a companion novel, back to back. I liked Drowned World more but I definitely recommend both. Great prototypes of what is now called cli-fi. Since it is #MayMovieMagic I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention Ben Wheatley's perfect adaptation of another favorite Ballard, High Rise.

rohit-sawant I wasn't aware of Ballard! This sounds really interesting! 9mo

#WhenTheLeveeBreaks (Featured in Argo) "I will take what is mine with fire and blood."

There've been mixed reactions to the latest season of GoT, but I've liked pretty much every episode so far. Can't imagine the pressure the creative team must be under to wrap arcs and storylines in the reduced episode count. Uncle Stevie said it best.

Cathythoughts I only saw the first episodes.. it‘s brilliant... yes Uncle Stevie says it best 👍🏻♥️♥️ 9mo
vivastory I totally agree. I think this is a great final season. Better than other beloved HBO series that had rather disappointing & lackluster season endings (The Wire & Boardwalk Empire both come to mind) 9mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I'm liking it all. It's rushed, but still good. (You might want to put a spoiler cover on this post though 😊) 9mo

Bklover I can‘t wait to see how this all wraps up! 9mo
rohit-sawant @Cathythoughts Isn't it?! 🙌🏼 Loved that he thanked the creative team in his recent tweet. He's such a class act. 💕 9mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory Right? And agree about The Wire (I've yet to see Boardwalk Empire). I'm pretty satisfied with how it's turned out. Marc Bernardin rightly said that this is probably one of the last "water cooler shows" where audiences are on the same page, which grows rare with on-demand streaming, and the global experience it's created is a win in itself. Sure, it was bumpy at times but overall it was a great ride. 9mo
rohit-sawant @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Ha, didn't cross my mind 😄 👍🏼 9mo
rohit-sawant @Bklover I had a hard time sleeping from the anticipation! 9mo
Bklover So what did you think? 9mo
rohit-sawant @Bklover I liked it. Then again, I'm easily pleased 😁 I can see how a majority of the audiences felt that a lot was wanting, but I think no matter how they ended it, pleasing everyone would've been impossible. I do wish we had more episodes to really flesh things out but considering the constraints, it was good. Chuck Wendig made some great points about why it didn't meet his expectations. You'll find it an interesting read, too @vivastory 9mo
Bklover I think I‘m disappointed because it‘s over. I wish there‘d been more time too. Looking forward to seeing what GRRM does in the books (whenever they come out!). 9mo
Bklover Loved the article- I like the statement that it just stopped rather than ended. 9mo

Day 19 of #MayMovieMagic with #WhenTheLeveeBreaks #BookToMovie

@Rohit-sawant @Cinfhen

Cinfhen I remember the film 😢😢😢 9mo
Cinfhen Is it still raining by you??? More homework to do 😉 9mo
marleed @Cinfhen Michelle Phifer was more likable in the film than Beth in the book. I was thinking this would have been a good response to a question earlier this week about unlivable protagonists! ... Rain reprieve so I better get some miles for the CFN. Good thing I have tomorrow‘s pick ready! 9mo

On his first night at Green Knowe, Tolly is rowed through the flooded gardens by lamplight after having travelled through a flooded England, drenched by rain. I love that this English landscape hinges between reality and fantasy; there's no solid division between the real and imagination, which is to me is a crucial element of the best children's books 💚

#WhenTheLeveeBreaks #MayMovieMagic @rohit-sawant @Cinfhen

saresmoore Mmm, great point about children‘s lit! If the book was good enough, just reading it would blur my sense of reality in everyday life for a while. I miss that. 9mo
Chrissyreadit I love this book! I listened to it several times with my children on long car rides (many years ago) and it remains a favorite ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 9mo
rohit-sawant So wonderfully described! Love your point about the blend of the real and imaginary. 9mo

batsy @saresmoore I know, right? I miss that kind of immersion reading that totally transports me until I forget who I am. 9mo
batsy @Chrissyreadit That's lovely! I only read it recently because of a readalong hosted by @TheBookHippie and I regret not having read it as a kid! But better late than never 😁 9mo
batsy @rohit-sawant ❤️❤️ 9mo
TheBookHippie @batsy ❤️💚 This was simply wonderful. 9mo
LeahBergen I need to pull this off my shelf for a read soon. 👍🏻 9mo
saresmoore I mean, I did recapture a bit of that when I binge watched the entire series of Gossip Girl a few years ago. 😅 9mo
batsy @LeahBergen It's so lovely ❤️ 9mo
batsy @saresmoore Well, just between us, I also recaptured that feeling while watching Pretty Little Liars 😂😭 9mo

The lyrics of #WhenTheLeveeBreaks make me think of the power of nature, which is also so perfectly descibed in this great quote by Florence, a colored woman in my current read. I‘m loving it so far.

Cinfhen Ohhhh!! I own this book but haven‘t read it yet! I‘ve been curious ever since @emilyhaldi posted about this book 😊❤️ 9mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I may have bought it because of her review too, I don‘t remember why I bought it but it is set in Mississippi so it fits my challenge. It is really good, so far. You should get to it soon 😀😘 (edited) 9mo
TrishB I enjoyed this one 👍🏻 though sad and made me angry! 9mo
Tamra Good one! 9mo
LeahBergen I really enjoyed this book. 👍🏻 9mo
