This dark, creepy novel about a tree nourished by lies and fruited with truths is the perfect read for a Snow Day!

ATL got 1-2 inches of snow last night, and the city has ground to a halt. It‘s not a problem for me though, plenty of reading to do!

Mehso-so

I would have liked this better if I had a connection to characters and the comics from which they were derived. An incredible writer, Valente created six vibrantly different voices for each of her characters. The novel is filled with rage at an industry that time and again dismisses it‘s women, both fictional and realistic.

It just was not for me.

A perfect Halloween read and highly recommended!! 🎃👻

Thirty-five years after the initial uprising, society has changed to accommodate zombies. The main characters are blogger journalists following a presidential campaign of the first candidate to have been under 18 during the zombie uprising. After a series of fatal incidents on the trail, the bloggers begin to suspect someone of sabotaging the campaign. Another wild ride by Seanan McGuire!

Bui traces her family‘s origins and flight from war-torn South Vietnam to parse her identity. Beautifully illustrated, the memoir sketches the trauma of forsaking a home to seek refuge and belonging in an entirely different culture. A poignant read during the current political and socioeconomic climate.

I wish it were still the weekend, and I did not have to work! Oh well.

I loved this book. Liadan was such an engrossing character, and her strength was so inspiring. The romance was absolutely lovely, despite lacking picture perfection.

This novel was powerfully feminine. I am not sure I can do its beauty justice in this review. I will be rereading it for years to come.

I finally got around to reading this novella. It starts with a very interesting hook, the incarnation of a being who is forcibly dedicated to a task. Ree is a fascinating protagonist with a fierce nature and the desire for self-determination.

I am absolutely looking forward to the sequel. And tor.com is winning the novella game so hard. Maybe the Booksmugglers will give them some competition this year.

MCYmermaid So many of my short works on my Kobo app / shelves are from Tor.com! 7y
thec0zy @MCYmermaid Mine too! You really cannot go wrong with them. I think Binti was the novella that really sold me; I've been a goner ever since. 7y

One race with ice magic, the Frostbloods, have oppressed the fire magic race of Firebloods for about a century. There is not a better sentence to demonstrate the two-dimensionality of this novel, except perhaps, 'the Fireblood girl melts the icy heart of her Frostblood guard with her magical heat.'

The romance is trite, the romance plot twist barely merits that description, the heroine whines ceaselessly, and the dialogue. Omg the dialogue.

Girls at the Kingfisher Club is a retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses, which was one of my favorite fairytales as a child. Valentine does a wonderful job subverting the fairytale narrative and offering instead a novel about women claiming independence for themselves in 12 different ways.

(and Genevieve Valentine is the name her parents gave her. So cool, right?)

I cannot believe it is over. It was such an enjoyable novel. The characters feel well and truly fleshed out, and the plot was well-executed. I was concerned the novel's length would make the plot plod along, but it did not! I would have felt swindled if it were any shorter.

According to @maria.mianaai , V.E. Schwab effectively had two books in A Conjuring of Light, but she wanted the Darker Shades to remain a trilogy. To make that happen, the publisher had to mess with the margins to keep the book under 700 pages. This picture does not perfectly illustrate the difference, but the margins in A Conjuring of Light are about half the width of those in A Gathering of Shadows. 😍🤓📚

So look, I read this as I was recuperating from my wisdom teeth extraction, which means pain meds affected my perspective on this book. They made me like it. It probably also helps that I've never read any Connie Willis before.
It was a light science fiction romance. Without my pain meds, I would have found the characterizations and dialogue painful and irritating. So I guess I say read this when you're not fully focusing on it.

Somehow this #bookmail isn't as exciting as the others. I also exempted it from my book buying ban 😒 oh well.

tricours I translate for a higher ed website that keeps going on about GMAT and preparations and I'm just so glad I don't have to take it myself 🤓 7y
thec0zy @tricours lucky!! I was really hoping after college I would never have to take a standardized test again lol 😂 7y
tricours What do you need it for? 7y

thec0zy @tricours I'm thinking about going to business school. Or at least, I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my life lol. And taking the GMAT seems like a good idea to cultivate options. What languages do you translate? 7y
tricours Sounds daunting 😬 I don't translate much anymore, I live in the most expensive country in Europe (Norway) and translate into another language (Swedish), so it doesn't pay well enough... But if I do translate, it's mostly Norwegian, Danish and English into Swedish, with some very occasional French and Russian. But that pays even less... 7y
thec0zy @tricours that's amazing!! I want to learn more languages (besides English, I only know dead languages). Are there many similarities between Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish? Or are they very different? 7y
tricours Bokmål Norwegian and Danish are very similar in writing, and Swedish is quite similar to them ?Which dead ones do you know? I've also studied dead languages! 7y
thec0zy @tricours Latin, Ancient Greek, and a veryyyy rusty smattering of Old English! I keep meaning to add some live languages 😊 which ones have you studied? 7y
tricours The only ones I can actually read in are Old Church Slavonic and Old Russian, but I've studied some Ancient Greek and old Norse too, however without any proficiency... 7y
thec0zy @tricours Oh nice! I always wanted to check out old Norse, but my college didn't offer any courses. The library was a little scant too. 7y
tricours The old Norse class I took at the university of Oslo was so bad! It's obligatory for teachers of Norwegian in Norway, but they don't particularly like it, so it was full of uninspired 20 year old girls and the level was kindergarten:ish -- whereas I wanted an old Norse for historical linguists kind of class... 😩 7y
thec0zy @tricours that sounds so disappointing! And there was only that course, no ability to opt into a more in-depth level? That's so cruel. 7y

I made a huge mistake when I started listening to this book. I started it while working. Cue me, sobbing like a baby while trying to work on an excel spreadsheet.

It was gorgeous, poignant, and rage-filled. I think it stayed true to the conflicting emotions inherent in traumatic situations. I think I will probably wait to watch the film in my own home. I'm not big on crying in theaters.

Moray_Reads I agree! I'd like to see it but I just can't subject the innocent public to my uncontrolled weeping and wailing. Holding out for the dvd 7y
thec0zy @Moray_Reads it's just the better choice for me, no need to drive home with a tear-jerked headache. 7y
[DELETED] 1409720085 Right? I cried so much during this one. Luckily I was at home. 7y

jpmcwisemorgan I watched it last night. By the end of the movie I stopped trying to dry my tears. At least one person in the theater was loudly sobbing. It's one that might have been best watched at home. 7y
TrishB My daughter said she can't wait to watch it again at home so she can ugly cry as apparently she cried in a restrained way at the pictures!! 7y
thec0zy @emilydecato that was totally the right decision. Omg so many tears. 7y
thec0zy @jpmcwisemorgan yes, I am definitely going to watch it at home then. I would soak through a handkerchief for sure. 7y
thec0zy @TrishB more power to her! I cannot restrain my tears, once they start, they're going full force, with or without my consent! 7y
Gayan I will have to watch it at home also. By the time I finished the audio book I looked like a very unstable person, walking around sobbing and muttering to myself. 7y
thec0zy @Gayan that is exactly what I did, except with loud snuffling sounds as I attempted to wipe my nose. (edited) 7y

Kate Harker is a human who wants to be monstrous, and August Flynn is a monster who wants to be human. They are on opposing sides in the simmering conflict that embroils their city, but choose to protect each other rather than fight.

#mounttbr

I did not connect with the characters as much as I would have liked, but still enjoyed reading the novel.

MrBook Nice review and pic 😊👍🏻! 7y
thec0zy Thanks, @MrBook ☺️ 7y

This was a really good read, focused on determining your truth and standing up for it respectfully. I think this will be especially important for me in 2017.

Now I'm thinking about pursuing a career in Negotiations, that's how much I enjoyed reading this book.

Panpan

To be honest though, this Pan was really my bad. I forgot that I hate being told how I should act or who I should want to be. Actually, I intensely dislike the word "should." Thank you, #CatholicSchool.

I did appreciate the shoutouts to the Simones Veil and de Beauvoir.

elkeOriginal 🙌 (High five, not a praise jesus - Catholic school survivor here😉) 7y
Michelle_mck My Catholic schools were the opposite - no should for us. Maybe Australian schools are different 7y
thec0zy @elkeo 🙌🏻 we gotta stick together! 7y
thec0zy @Michelle_mck maybe! I'm kinda jealous of your lack of "should." Did you get any guilttripping? 7y
Michelle_mck @thec0zy no none at all... it wasn't strict - we had discipline but not over the top 7y
