The Troop
The Troop | Nick Cutter
WINNER OF THE JAMES HERBERT AWARD FOR HORROR WRITING The Troop scared the hell out of me, and I couldnt put it down. This is old-school horror at its best. Stephen King Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping tripa tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. The boys are a tight-knit crew. Theres Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well liked and easygoing; then theres Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be therewhich makes Scoutmaster Tims job a little easier. But for some reason, he cant shake the feeling that something strange is in the air this year. Something waiting in the darkness. Something wicked It comes to them in the night. An unexpected intruder, stumbling upon their campsite like a wild animal. He is shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungrya man in unspeakable torment who exposes Tim and the boys to something far more frightening than any ghost story. Within his body is a bioengineered nightmare, a horror that spreads faster than fear. One by one, the boys will do things no person could ever imagine. And so it begins. An agonizing weekend in the wilderness. A harrowing struggle for survival. No possible escape from the elements, the infectedor one another. Part Lord of the Flies, part 28 Days Laterand all-consumingthis tightly written, edge-of-your-seat thriller takes you deep into the heart of darkness, where fear feeds on sanityand terror hungers for more.

By far the most revolting book I‘ve ever read. It can be an enjoyably creepy-crawly experience, but at least one plot point seemed directly lifted from the superior The Ruins, and when the horror element evolves it goes from genuinely horrifying to B-movie schlock. STILL I would read Cutter again. His other books sound interesting. Has anyone read him?

Nute Yes, I read this book and it made me feel sick to my stomach. It was disgusting! I gave it a ‘pick‘ rating because it accomplished creeping me out ten-fold. 4mo
GhostStories It definitely accomplishes that! Agreed. 4mo

“His fear was whetted to such a fine edge that he could actually feel it now: a disembodied ball of baby fingers inside his stomach, tickling him from the inside. That's what mortal terror felt like, he realized. Tiny fingers tickling you from the inside.” from The Troop

1 of the best horror novels I‘ve read in last 10 years. I dare you to read it, watch The Bay https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1713476/ then try to eat. 😈

#QuotsyMar19 #scout @TK-421

flying_monkeys I read this back in May 2014 but I still get the heebie jeebies when I think about it. Or when I see a troop of scouts I have an irrational urge to warn them. 😂🤔 5mo
LiterRohde Liked The Deep. I‘ll have to check this one out. 5mo
flying_monkeys @LiterRohde imho The Deep wasn‘t as scary as The Troop, but The Deep was certainly claustrophobic. Had the violence in The Acolyte been toned down slightly then its dystopian future would‘ve truly shined because that world was more terrifying than both the other two combined, at least for me. 5mo

Late to the party.... But my January wrap up! With busy-ness of work & life, I was only able to complete 3 books in January but that's ok! 😊

my favorite had to be The Troop. That book was tons of gory fun!
Least favorite Cuckoo's Calling BUT I'm invested and will continue the series :)

This book is nightmare fuel. A horrific outbreak amongst young boys camping in the woods, far from home with no escape is scary enough, but add on the depth of description in this novel and the isolation and it‘s even more than scary. I thought this was absolutely excellent because it wasn‘t just a horror novel that revolves around an infection, but it really got into the minds of the characters. Super terrifying. #newyearwhodis

DGRachel That‘s a real struggle point for me, too. There was a really popular book last year that had a two page animal torture scene. I bailed and commented on Goodreads thinking others might like that warning and some fool wanted to argue with me about how the scene was important to show character development. 🙄 9mo

I honestly couldn't get into this book. I gave it a good chance and read nearly 200 pages of it. It is a very very character driven story. I was under the impression that it was going to be a scary book with maybe some violence and gore. It is no where near what I would consider horror. There are some parts that some people I'm sure would find disturbing, but compared to other horror books I've read, this one just fell short for me.

Everyone always suggests this one as an amazing horror novel and I kept waiting for some horror. Didn‘t get any. Just got some gross scenes and animal abuse/murder.
Trust me the Boston cream donut was far better than the book 🍩
ALSO he spelled Josef Mengele‘s name wrong and I just cannot even put into words how angry that made me.

cody1018 Without reading your review I basicially just said the same thing. I was not scared at all and really thought what the book would be about would have been a lot more scary. When I found out what the book was about, I said to myself......that's it? I couldn't get past the constant back stories of the characters either. I just wanted some blood and violence. 9mo

I am the worst at planning what I will read but here is my attempt. The top row are audiobooks and the bottom e-books. I just got The Troop from the library and An Anonymous Girl is an ARC. I am in the middle of HP and The Craftsman so those two are a sure bet! #tbr #seasonsreadings

eanderson I loved the Craftsman! Sharon Bolton is my all time favorite author. An Anonymous Girl was a great book as well! 9mo
jenniferajanes I hate to confess this as everyone is posting what they‘re reading this month, but I‘m emboldened by your admission. I never plan what I‘m going to read unless it‘s for a read along or book club. I finish one book and then see what I‘m in the mood for next. Maybe I should try planning and see where that takes me... 9mo
JoScho @jenniferajanes oh yeah same! I don‘t even usually attempt a TBR but thought I would give it a shot. And I only listed four and last month I read ten so I am giving myself plenty of wiggle room. Don‘t feel bad because I am the exact same way. 9mo

Warning: this is a grossly graphic book, there were some parts where I really wanted to stop reading, but I just had to know what happens. This book is what happens when Lord of the Flies, a mad scientist with an interest in biological warfare, and a sociopath meet.

Story of the Canadian equivalent of a boyscout troop on a deserted island for a campout when a mystery man arrives carrying an illness. I‘m giving this book a pick because even though it was so gross I couldn‘t read it while eating, there was a point where I audibly gasped “ohmygod!” The last third had me on pins and needles. It‘s not just about the illness or it‘s spread but also about the depravity and heroism we are all capable of.

Lord of the Flies plus mutant bioengineered tapeworms. This was very gory, more than I cared for. The story had potential and wasn't bad but I had some issues with the writing. The author loves using similes and especially comparing things to overripe fruit and the color of bruises as he used nearly the same comparisons several times. The boys were all the usual suspects and reminiscent of King's stories of boyhood friendships.

Overall, this was disappointing. Other than an intriguing premise and a very good depiction of a budding sociopath, it wasn‘t scary or surprising. And the Lord of the Flies comparisons are completely off. Much closer to the Island of Dr Moreau. I probably won‘t read Cutter again.

TricksyTails Is it the spicy one again? Teach me how to make it! 🙏 I love 🌶🍫😍 2y
SkeletonKey @TricksyTails - Yes!! I have a homemade recipe somewhere but for now, my secret is that with whatever pre-made powder mix I use I add a dash of either cayenne pepper OR ancho chile pepper (if I want softer heat), and also a tiny bit of cinnamon. Then don't forget the whipped cream 😂 2y
Kimberlone Try to limit myself to one physical book and after that just read whatever I have on my nook. I‘ve learned from experience I never read as much as I think I will on vacation! 2y
SkeletonKey @Kimberlone - It definitely depends on where I'm headed for me, but I know at least one of my plane trips is nearly 23 hours in the air and I can't handle screens 😂😂😂 2y
TricksyTails Thank you! 🤗 I'm going to try it! I loooove spicy. I might see if I can find ghost pepper powder. 🤔 Do you have a favorite cocoa mix? Mmm can't forget the whipped cream. 😋 2y
SkeletonKey @TricksyTails - Usually just Rich Chocolate Swiss Miss 😁 sometimes I get fancy stuff but that's what I always have on hand. 2y
No_One @SkeletonKey @TricksyTails interesting! I do that with my coffee. A sprinkle of cinnamon and cayenne in with the grounds. Especially if the coffee isn't as good as I'd like it to be, as was the case with some that my parents recently brought back from Costa Rica. 😊☕ 2y
TricksyTails Yummayyyy! Thank you for sharing! Need to hit the grocery store now. 😁 2y
SkeletonKey @No_One - Oh wow, that sounds amazing! 2y
TricksyTails @No_One Tell me more. I must try this. 2y
No_One @SkeletonKey also, I recommend buying at least one book at your holiday destination! Who am I kidding? I'm sure you already planned that. You are a #Litten, after all. 😊 2y
No_One @TricksyTails lol, that's all she wrote! Just vary the spice according to your taste. In my opinion, it's best with sugar and milk, too, but everyone takes their coffee differently. 😊 2y
SkeletonKey @No_One - We are kind of predictable in the book-buying department 😄😄😄 2y
TricksyTails @No_One Going to try it! Thank you! 🤗 2y
TricksyTails So I was busy going gaga over the hot cocoa...I need that mug!! 😍 2y
No_One @TricksyTails @SkeletonKey omg, ouija mug!!! Sooo very cool! ☕☕☕ 2y
SkeletonKey @No_One @TricksyTails - All Hail the Halloween Store clearance selection on November 1st, hehe. 2y

My current #audiobook read. And I seriously don't know what's scarier, the actual scary worm monster in the book or a couple of the more mosterous boys in the troop...

Karkar I go with the naughty boys being scarier and worms being gross. 2y

Nope, Nope. Nope. I started this by just reading a random page & there were worms. Too gross & upsetting for me. Worms & skin stuff are big triggers for me. I still can‘t get the chapter about the worm from My Best Friend‘s Exorcism out of my head.
This is one science gone wrong book I wished I hadn‘t picked up. I read the last chapter (cause I still needed to know how it ends) & am now adding it to the donate pile. I only paid .25 for it today.

Grimscythe I want this in physical copy so badly. It‘s one of my favorites. XD 2y
MaleficentBookDragon @TheGhastlyGrimoire send me your address and I‘ll send it to you. MaleficentBookDragon@gmail.com 2y
Reggie Well good, then you didn‘t get to the chapter with the monkey or the one with the turtle. (nightmares for days) 2y
MaleficentBookDragon @Reggie thank goodness. They mention the turtle at the end and I am so glad I did not get there. I still can‘t get Lord of the Flies out of my head and I read that when I was twelve. Books are so much worse than movies for me. I can watch Hellraiser while eating dinner but books stay with me forever. 2y
