She Walks in Beauty
She Walks in Beauty: A Woman's Journey Through Poems | Caroline Kennedy
29 posts | 13 read | 11 to read
In She Walks in Beauty, Caroline Kennedy has once again marshaled the gifts of our greatest poets to pay a very personal tribute to the human experience, this time to the complex and fascinating subject of womanhood. Inspired by her own reflections on more than fifty years of life as a young girl, a woman, a wife, and a mother, She Walks in Beauty draws on poetry's eloquent wisdom to ponder the many joys and challenges of being a woman. Kennedy has divided the collection into sections that signify to her the most notable milestones, passages, and universal experiences in a woman's life, and she begins each of these sections with an introduction in which she explores and celebrates the most important elements of life's journey. The collection includes works by Elizabeth Bishop, Sharon Olds, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, W. H. Auden, Adrienne Rich, Sandra Cisneros, Anne Sexton, W. S. Merwin, Dorothy Parker, Queen Elizabeth I, Lucille Clifton, Naomi Shahib Nye, and W. B. Yeats. Whether it's falling in love, breaking up, friendship, marriage, motherhood, or growing old, She Walks in Beauty is a priceless resource for anyone, male or female, who wants a deeper understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a woman.

I recently lost my mother and have been having a very hard time lately. A great friend sent me this wonderful book. Can‘t wait to start reading! Poetry can be so very healing. 💕

I picked up this one because poetry was one of the genres for a challenge in a book club I'm in. Poetry is just usually not my cup of tea to be honest but I liked some of them in this collection. I liked how they were separated into their different categories like love, friendship, and motherhood. My favorite section was the last one titled How To Live.

I picked this book up initially because on the day that Mary Oliver passed away, a friend of mine posted one of her poems. I'd never heard of Oliver and I loved the poem. When I found out that there were a couple of Mary Oliver's poems in "She Walks In Beauty", I decided to give poetry a shot. I'm still not a huge fan, but some of the poems definitely stuck with me!

I've never really been big into poetry. How many of you love it? Are men reading it or is it mostly women?

CouronneDhiver I imagine poetry appeals to members of both genders, but I‘m not among its fans. 10mo
SamanthaMarie My husband enjoys poetry. He often picks it up more than I do. 10mo

CarolynM I like poetry but I don't read it as much as I used to. My husband likes it too and probably reads it more often than me. 10mo
WorldsOkayestStepMom @CarolynM interesting! My husband doesn't like reading it, but he loves listening to it being read aloud. 10mo

When you're less than halfway through a book of poetry (tagged book), your book club just started a new novel, and your library hold came in all at the same time, it's time to cuddle with this fuzzball and get in some reading. 💖💖💖 #catsoflitsy #crazycatlady #bookwormforlife

I didn't get the chance to go to a bookstore today but I did go visit my girlfriend at her work , she is a school librarian. I love looking at all the books there and I also take some 😂😂 #booksandshelfiesm18

For a book with a flower on the cover, how about a book of poems since I'm really into poetry lately? #marchinbooks #happinessresistance #booktherapy

Thanks to @DeborahSmall for the formatting idea- hope it's ok I copied you! Please take as compliment!

DeborahSmall You did better than me 💕😂 3y
ValerieAndBooks I have this one too -- the anthology is very well done IMO. I suspect it may be overlooked because a Kennedy put it together-- if you know what I mean? 3y
kspenmoll @ValerieAndBooks Totally know what you mean, as I was initially guilty of that thought! Until my sister gave it to me & I opened its pages! 3y

This book... this book started as part of my engagement to my wonderful husband. He took me to Barnes and Noble to show me a book he thought I would like. I picked it up and when I looked inside, there was my engagement ring, flower petals, and him on one knee. One of my greatest moments ever. So, fast forward 3 years later, I finally read the book. So full of great advice, poems that made me laugh, poems that made me cry. One of my absolute faves

DebinHawaii What a great story and wonderful memories to have! ❤️📚❤️ 3y

Surprised how very few pink covers I own; in fact pink does not extend much onto these covers. Lots of shades of red, orange...

My apologies for not posting a poem yesterday. What appeared to be a family crisis was unfolding, and I had to deal with it. It continued today, topped off by a tooth extraction. Things have calmed down, but I'm a little rattled. This poem by Emily Bronte fits my mood. #LitsyPoetry365

This is from an anthology whose poems were selected by Caroline Kennedy. She focuses on poetry that speaks to various aspects of womanhood. This poem was inspired by a letter written in 1934 on a topic that is still relevant today. #LitsyPoetry365

LazyOwl Very moving 3y
