Wow, what a great book. I would love to see this turn into a miniseries on Netflix. My favorite part was how graphic it was. I was thoroughly creeped out!

This book kept my attention. I found myself thinking about and counting down when I could pick it up again. I was truly sad when it was finished!

This book definitely lived up to its name. Like others have said, I saw what was coming a mile away. I like Noemi and would love to know what happens after the end. All in all, a dark read with a good take on an old plot.

Thank you @peanutnine for this awesome #speculativespringswap #sss package! I‘ve heard so many good things about this book and look forward to sampling the teas! And the book weight! How do I not already have one of these?! Should make my life easier for reading while eating/petting my cat/during my semi-monthly IV infusion medication treatments, as well as for cookbooks in the kitchen.

Thanks @Avanders for hosting!

This was intriguing to read, but also disturbing.

This had really dark atmosphere, I love gothic books and this was mysterious from the first pages. I loved how secrets started to reveal themselves.

It was quite easy to guess what was happening and this could have been a bit more realistic but I still enjoyed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
The short review is: it was incredibly well written. And I hated it.
The longer review: the first 2/3 of this book is a pretty faithful, more modern Gothic tale, and then it takes a turn decidedly into horror.
Moreno-Garcia is amazing at crafting setting & mood, and I was unsettled the whole time I was reading her work.
It‘s difficult to explain: I never enjoyed what I was reading & yet I couldn‘t put it down.

I was all set with a gothic novel and coming from a different part of the world but started to get turned off when they decided to go with an English mansion, really? So stereotypical, give me some new creepy architecture!

Also the ending? 🍄🍄🍄? Really?
I think I like stories where you don't really know what the evil entity is, much scarier.

It‘s rare for me to get caught up so swiftly in a story that it‘s hard to put down. This was one of those stories. I loved the gothic atmosphere, the world setting and the mystery of what we may view as paranormal. I loved the authors take on the ouroboros and how it is betrayed in the story. I will never view the buzzing sound of bees the same ever again. If you enjoy a story that will keep you captivated until the very end, then this is for you!

My second book for #NewYearWhoDis was one I could not put down. I loved the protagonist and couldn‘t stand the antagonists (as it should be lol). The plot had me biting my nails and turning the pages with no concern for the time. The reason behind all the madness is not what you‘d think, and the conclusion wrapped everything up nicely. Thanks for the recommendation @IndoorDame ❤️ @monalyisha #NYWD22

♥I have to be honest I expected more but I don't deny that I liked and intrigued much of the story, only I didn't perceive the horror part. The ending, even if suitable, I found it hasty and confused. For the rest it helped me to get out of a probable reader block, it is not a story that will engage you, but with the right suspense. I appreciated the protagonist, she made the right choices in situations and decided, going against preconceptions.♥ ︎

First, how can anyone get any reading done with THIS FACE staring at you??!!
Ok, so being on walks with a puppy, I was interrupted/distracted a lot. Still, I knew what was going on so I feel that says something about how it dragged, it felt like nothing "got anywhere." And I felt really no suspense, or horror, fright, etc.
And then it just got weird, and kind of confusing. More below ⬇️

Andrea4 And I know there was classicist and feminist discussions in this but they felt contrived and also then confused within themselves (especially when talking about the power dynamics). Anyway, probably unpopular opinion but I just didn't get that lovely gothic vibe. 4mo

Honestly, annoyed that this platform since a picture of Mexican Gothic did not populate with the search under the title.
Anyway, I struggled to complete the book simply because it seemed like it packed a lot of action in the beginning, however in the middle of book the paragraphs dragged a bit with filler sequencing by writing in two characters to get to the history of the house aka high place. 🐍💀🍄👻+📖📑🙅🏽‍♀️=🇲🇽🥀

Walking around with this fool today- who super enjoyed the snow but is still wary of strong winds (among other things). The main character picks up this book to read and I haven't heard his book mentioned since 4th year undergrad, more than a decade ago! My copy of this book states it was first published in 1976 though, so I'm a little confused how someone in the 50s is reading it.

Leftcoastzen It was originally published in 1937 . The author E E Evans-Pritchard died in 1973.Sometimes those reprint editions don‘t have the most accurate publishing history inside. 4mo
Andrea4 @Leftcoastzen thanks :) I wondered if it was a mistake in my edition because I couldn't imagine the author not looking into that. 4mo
Leftcoastzen You‘re welcome. Metaphysical and magic reprints seem to not work as hard to get publishing history correct. 4mo
Andrea4 @Leftcoastzen that's odd, and would seem to do them a disservice. 4mo

I‘m super late to the party but I really liked this. It‘s a gothic tale of a girl named Noemi in 1950‘s Mexico who is dispatched by her father to check on her cousin Catalina who lives in High House, a house in disrepair, high up on the hill, that one must take a windy road through the mist that ends by a cemetery to get to. This was wonderfully creepy. This is my 4th Moreno-Garcia book, and she always delivers a good solid story. A gothic pick!

Reggie Also, this was my first book through the Libby app. 4mo
Bookzombie How do you like the app? This one is on my TBR. 4mo
Reggie @Bookzombie I like it. It allowed me to read it on my kindle app. And now, after seeing another person talk about the new Yanigihara, I now have that on my kindle. The only thing is, my library is not big on indie horror, lol, but I‘m liking it a lot so far. 4mo

Librarybelle I really liked this one! 4mo
Bookzombie I was trying to see if you can access other libraries‘ collections for free. For example, as a Texas resident I can access Houston‘s ebooks. So far the only thing I have found is the New Mexico State Library has New Mexico Reads, which is accessible for all New Mexicans. It doesn‘t look like they would have much horror though and I think it‘s a different app than Libby. I will look further. 🙂 4mo
Reggie @AmyG you‘re welcome. Lol, I literally had to put the food down to continue. 4mo
Reggie @Librarybelle Me too. My favorite of hers is still Untamed Shores. 4mo
Reggie @Bookzombie I think I can go to most of the libraries and get a card no matter where I live. I just called the Albuquerque Library and they just said I had to show up in person with proof of where I lived. And there was no cost. 4mo
Bookzombie @Reggie That‘s awesome! I didn‘t know how far Albuquerque would be. I was trying to find where you didn‘t have to go in person. 4mo

A day late in posting this…thanks for the tag, @TheRiehlDeal !

1. I think it depends upon my mood. Sometimes, I want a book that is fast paced and moves along rather quickly. Other times, I love the slow meandering pace of the book, the slow burn.

2. This is such a good example of a slow burn. It‘s slow, really, really slow. But, when the action hits, it became such a page turner for me. Loved it!!
