Another crazy week & the next one will be as well.😬 After running my errands today I treated myself to a poke bowl from a little place close to my neighborhood. This one is miso ahi & Hawaiian salt ahi with tempura flakes on top. 😋

Finally getting to this book on my TBR forever. It‘s part of my Kindle Summer Challenge so I need to finish it in September.

A very good gothic tale set in 1950's with historical and mystical elements. Creepy and unique with a very likable and charismatic heroine. Read somewhere they are making a tv show, which will be a good watch 👻

I still think this is one of the most gorgeous covers of a book. A historical fiction book with a thread of magical realism. SMG is such an interesting writer, all of her books are different from the others. She has such a talent for story telling.

Creepy, suspenseful and unique.
This was a page turner, and I loved the revamp of the gothic genre. Noemí was an extremely likeable heroine, and you're rooting for her throughout.
The book is being adapted into a TV series and I think it will be visually stunning.
A great book to read around the fire on a cold evening, it would be a good Halloween read.

Saknicole I can‘t wait for the adaptation! 7mo

A refreshing setting-upper-class Mexico- & an eye-opening backdrop of British colonialism there, which I found out was real. I prefer gothic to horror & there was too much of the latter, but the gothic tone of the opening was good. Noemí was obtuse, as heroines in such scenarios have to be. The pregnancy-like effect on the central male of the substance at the heart of the plot was subversive & that substance is suddenly EVERYWHERE in pop culture!

This was a great #audiobook but honestly it might not have held my interest as text. I do love a scary house is trying to eat you story so definitely giving it a pick. I've said this before but this author is all over the place genre wise.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I am always down for a creepy family and fungus-ridden house, but she lost my attention a bit in the middle. I‘ll consider it a win after bailing on two of her other books. #AuthorAMonth

Naomí‘s cousin Catalina quickly married a mysterious Englishman living in Mexico. After she moves to his estate, the family receives wild, feverish letters that concern them. Plucky young Naomí is sent to investigate.

Well, that was a bit…weird! It‘s a soft pick, as I‘m not a huge fan of gothic books anyway, but this was odd in that it is set in Mexico but in a traditional English country house, so didn‘t feel Mexican at all. It‘s all a bit odd to me but I kinda liked it!

As @Laughterhp commented on her recent post, I also have no idea what a #socialhorror book is, but this was classed as such so I‘m taking it! This is my last book for #pop22 - yay!

How to Keep House While Drowning - 5⭐️, neurodivergent-friendly, super helpful for self-compassion and protips
Mexican Gothic - 5⭐️, badass protagonist, great creepy atmosphere
Briarley - 4⭐️, sweet m/m Beauty & the Beast retelling, WWII, dragon

PLEASE LOOK UP CONTENT WARNINGS!

I had hoped this would be a Gothic tale in the context of Mexican culture, but it's still very English. It does deal with colonialism though.

I rooted for Noemí from the start to the finish and would love to see this same character in a totally different story, from a totally different genre, hopefully having a much better time of it. Maybe a cozy mystery where she's a Miss-Fisher-esque private investigator? ✨️

First (and hopefully only) bail of the year. This book has more mushrooms than the Super Mario universe. Mushrooms are now my least favorite pizza topping. Thank you Mexican Gothic.

jeannasser What the absolute fuck was that twist? Seriously was this book inspired by Mario? What happens every time Mario takes a mushroom? He powers up and his lifespan increases. That‘s exactly what happens to the Doyle family in this book! They breathe in the mushrooms in the house and live longer. They also have to literally mate with each other in order to prolong the bloodline. Ew no. Bye 11mo

jeannasser @TalesandTexts exactly! There was so much info dumping whenever she interacted with Francis or Marta and it made me not care for a lot of stuff in the story. Catalina is supposed to be the center and driving force of the plot but she was barely in the book to begin with 😂 I wish the history of the miners was shown to me instead of just info dumped 11mo
jeannasser @IMASLOWREADER Yeah there was a bit of a creepy atmosphere. I feel like the whole Doyle situation was discomforting and it made me cringe in a good way. That‘s really the only positive I can find 😭 11mo

Certainly not for everyone and the end left me with mixed feelings, but ultimately I loved it and couldn‘t stop thinking about it! Weird, brooding, mysterious, and creepy. It lacked... something.
Don't get me wrong: the magical realism like Isabel Allende is good, the story is good, but I think that maybe it was the heroine herself that was a bit too unbearable. Some passages were not explored deeply enough, as well.
It was overall good, but not exceptional for the hype I had!

This bizarre, twisted tale of a dysfunctional family, romance, murder, and ghosts will certainly take you on a different ride than what you were expecting.
