My FAVORITE read of the year. I love all the Gothic tropes. Jane Eyre, Crimson Peak, and The Haunting of Bly Manor vibes. I love Noemí the protagonist. I saw somewhere that is is going to be an adaptation; needless to say, I AM DOWN FOR THAT. Any book recommendations that fit with this vibe? #Latina #Gothic

Kimberlone While I found this book interesting, I didn‘t love it. I think it was too short for the gothic feel to fully work for me. Needless to say I will watch the shit out of an adaptation 2w

Of all the possible plots and twists, I still wouldn‘t have guessed the ones in this book. Get Out meets….botanical horror?? Is that a genre? It‘s a slow burn with a lot of world building of the family early on but once it picks up, boy does it ever. A more modern take on classic horror and gothic style stories. Noemí is a true powerhouse heroine, loved her.

My stack of completed physical books for #Scarathlon2021! Death on the Nile, Orquídea Divina and Mexican Gothic are definitely my top three, but I can't pick a favorite betwen them. It was a good reading month for me! I only managed an hour of reading last night though, so that gives me 18 for #20in4. Next time, I swear I will conquer. 📚

Only critique is it took a while to move on from just okay shes still in the house… but again once it got going it GOES! 🍄🍄🍄

I just finished this book which was
✔️ one of my #20in4 goals
✔️ a horror book by a female PoC for #Screamathon

When Noemi‘s father gets a letter from her newly-wed cousin stating that something strange is going on in her bridegroom‘s mansion, Noemi is dispatched to solve the problem. She quickly unearths a mystery and a horror. I spent the story worrying if they could both make it out alive.

I feel like the hype around this was overblown. It felt repetitive, confused, and rife with plot holes. While the plot‘s base is sufficiently creepy, so much is unexplained with any kind of real richness. The characters are super one-dimensional. I kept expecting a twist and it never came. This wasn‘t for me, but as a Halloween-week read…meh. 🍄 🏠 🌹 🐍

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I picked this specifically for my weekend travel, and to bring a bit of horror to my reading list just in time for Halloween.

The author has nicely wrapped up elements of classic Gothic fiction with "botanical horror" (a phrase I've just recently learned) and tucked them into the shadows of a crumbling mansion and abandoned mine.

I found it to be creepy and delightful, albeit not unpredictable. Would be excellent for a rainy day read!

I LOVED this book! It was full of everything Gothic that I love — creepy house, freaky wallpaper, unexplained happenings — and some reveals later on that I was not expecting. Would definitely recommend! I love how Garcia took the ubiquitous English Gothic novel and twisted it into her own creation. And I loved all the mushroom stuff! 🍄

This book was incredible! I was disappointed to start a new story last night after finishing this one. A privileged young woman in 1950s Mexico visits her sick cousin, who lives in a dilapidated mansion with her husband's mysterious family. It was a horrific and unique narrative. I generally don't swing toward horror, yet this one has inspired me to read more of this genre!

Once the story really started getting creepy, I had a hard time putting this book down. It is a fun Gothic horror set in 1940s or 1950s Mexico, complete with a scary old mansion run by a mean old man who might just be a literal monster and not only a metaphorical one, a smart young heroine determined to solve the mystery of the family, ghosts (or just bad dreams?) and even some romance. Highly recommend.

I hesitated between a So-so and a Pick, but then I realized I've spent the whole of today just reading it. It's true that elements such as disturbing old manors, horrendous family secrets and fierce young brides dismantling dreadful traditions have been used once and again in so many books, this novel though does have its quota of originality that kept me glued till the last page.

ShelleyBooksie Beautiful photo 1mo

This has been on my tbr for ages so what better time of year than this to read it. Saw mixed reviews but I really enjoyed this one. It‘s classed as a gothic/thriller/horror and I‘d say yes it‘s gothic, it‘s quite haunting, wouldn‘t class it as horror or thriller though as it‘s pretty tame. A slow burner but I really liked the story and loved how sassy and cheeky the main character was. I‘d be interested to read more from this author

Such a slow burn (like, 200 pages of feeling kinda meh) but the payoff…I understand the hype. Impressive to write a Gothic that feels fresh and contemporary while also setting it the fifties, in Mexico, and not losing any of the tropes that make it a Gothic. Wow!!

I so badly wanted to give this book 5 stars and a rave review. But I just can't. It is a very intriguing story, written in a kind of boring way.
I will say though, reading it for yourself, with your own intonation may assist with this. I listened to it, and the narrator just didn't do it for me most of the time.
All that said, the story really is intriguing. So if you're looking for a fairly easy read with a good plot, This one is for you.
