Fatal
Fatal: The Poisonous Life of a Female Serial Killer | Harold Schechter
In an era that produced some of the most vicious female sociopaths in American history, Jane Toppan would become the most notorious of them all. AN ANGEL OF MERCY In 1891, Jane Toppan, a proper New England matron, embarked on a profession as a private-duty nurse. Selfless and good-natured, she beguiled Boston's most prominent families. They had no idea what they were welcoming into their homes.... A DEVIL IN DISGUISE No one knew of Jane's past: of her mother's tragic death, of her brutal upbringing in an adoptive home, of her father's insanity, or of her own suicide attempts. No one could have guessed that during her tenure at a Massachusetts hospital the amiable "Jolly Jane" was morbidly obsessed with autopsies, or that she conducted her own after-hours experiments on patients, deriving sexual satisfaction in their slow, agonizing deaths from poison. Self-schooled in the art of murder, Jane Toppan was just beginning her career -- and she would indulge in her true calling victim by victim to become the most prolific domestic fiend of the nineteenth century.

• I hate this! In the context of this story, the name doesn‘t matter, of course, but it matters to my editor‘s brain. What is the woman‘s name, for goodness sake?! Could the editor not decide?! 😩 •

• I never thought I‘d say this but here it goes: the ghastly crimes described in this book make Jack the Ripper seem almost humane 😲 •

• I‘m really enjoying this book; however, I think some of Schechter‘s dates are incorrect. I‘m reading part one, which features two other infamous lady poisoners of the 19th century: Lydia Sherman and Sarah Jane Robinson. They just keep dying and for the life of me, I can‘t understand how no one seemed to be the least bit suspicious until so many bodies had piled up. It‘s SO grotesque how these monstrous women committed such heinous crimes •

• Changing it up with some tea tonight instead of coffee. Really feels like a compromise! Here‘s hoping my tea hasn‘t been poisoned ☠️ Oh well, it‘s pretty good so I‘m drinking it anyway ⚰️ haha 😆 •

kaysworld1 In the current book im reading says that The Giggling Grandma aka Nannie Doss used 1 heaped teaspoon of Arsnic then in another coffee she used a teaspoon of rat poison, she sounds like a woman worth getting to know!? 😂 The second story about The Blood Countess aka Erzsebet Bathory was a bit of a eve opener.. 6y
bibliobliss @kaysworld1 Jeez!! Lol sounds like a book I should read 👍 6y

• Really been missing the true crime genre, so today—even though I have an insane amount of books going right now—I‘m starting this one. I love Harold Schechter‘s work; he‘s the perfect guide for real-life crime, gore and perversion: all things I reprehensibly enjoy reading about on a beautiful sunny afternoon. I‘m always fascinated by this stuff 😂 •

As soon as I saw the frankly magnificent washi tape @CandycaneBelle used to wrap my #allhallowsreadbookexchange gifts, I knew it was going to have to go in my #bujo. I hadn't left the space for it and didn't know what to do until I remembered the October daily reading tracker pages that I never actually recorded any reading in. 😂 #happyaccidents #ImissHalloween #THANKYOU

And thank god because I found 2 more bookmarks still in the package! 😱

Natasha.C.Barnes @CandycaneBelle I promise to let you know how the books are, they are on my 2018 reading list! 😊 6y
