The Golden Compass
The Golden Compass | Philip Pullman
Published in 40 countries, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy--The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass--has graced the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Book Sense, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. In 1996, The Golden Compass changed the face of fantasy publishing, and 2006 marks its 10 Year Anniversary--and an opportunity to celebrate with a deluxe hardcover. Pullman created new material just for this edition (archival documents, scientific notes and "found" letters of Lord Asriel) which has been illustrated and handlettered by renowned British artist Ian Beck and will be included in the back matter. The deluxe edition also features Pullman's own chapter opening spot art. A quality collectible--with the enticement of never-before-seen new material--for Pullman fans.

I've finished one more book (tagged) for #BFC since classes started! While meal prepping a couple days ago. But maybe all of the reading I've been doing for classes counts for something? 😂 I have an intensive course that's eating up my Fridays and Saturdays for now, and when that's over I should be able to get into a better rhythm! Also still wearing a knee brace and not running, it's driving me crazy! #BookFitnessChallenge #bookdragons #BFCr3

Scochrane26 I count books about therapy most of the time, and I‘m sure you‘re reading a lot for seminary. In my presbytery, we recently examined a new pastor for ordination, & she said she‘s happy to be done w/ seminary because she can actually read books for pleasure again. 17h
Caterina @Scochrane26 I have 6 courses, 15 textbooks, and lots of PDFs, but I haven't technically finished any books yet. 😂 But when I do finish some I'll be sure to count them! 👍 I think I'll probably only get reading for pleasure in through audiobooks during seminary - thank goodness for those! So relaxing to cook or run or clean while listening. 😊 14h

dizie_lizie @Ericalambbrown the photo actually releases the dates for the BBC and HBO! HBO will be Nov 4th (I‘m in California), so basically it‘s dropping everywhere nearly the same day and we don‘t have much longer to wait🤗 (edited) 2d

Started this audiobook yesterday because my hold came in unexpectedly early and it has a longer wait list than The Night Tiger, so I really need to finish it before it's due. I didn't read The Golden Compass in middle school when everyone was talking about it, since I lived in the Bible Belt and people said it was an evil propaganda tool from the atheists. 😂 Now I have many Christian friends who love it so I figured I'd give it a go! Good so far.

Scochrane26 Because us christians should never read anything that might have a different opinion. It might corrupt us. 😂🙄 2w
Caterina @Scochrane26 Right? 😂🤷 I was told it wasn't a good book, just cheap propaganda, so I figured I wouldn't bother reading it. Turns out that was a lie rooted in the fear of people who didn't want to expand their views - I shouldn't be surprised. I would've loved this book as a kid and it wouldn't've threatened my faith a lick! 🙄 2w

I saw the movie in the theater having not read the book at the time, so I'm only now seeing how it watered everything down.
Luckily this audiobook has a full cast so it is very much like a radio drama!

It‘s just as wonderful as I remember. I couldn‘t have been older than 12 when I first read this and it was one of my favorite books. After reading it, I wanted a daemon so bad. I‘m pretty sure I pretended my cat was a daemon. I‘m moving on to book 2 in the series. I never read those when I was younger. Not sure why.

Excitement level: CRITICAL!!!!

Just seen the His Dark Materials series trailer & I must say it looks very promising. It might just right some of the wrongs that horrible movie did.

Heck, it has the god-like Lin-Manuel Miranda in it! For that alone it triumphs! 😍😍😍

It has been a good few years since I watched the movie but from what I can remember it‘s quite different 🤔

Left with a few questions unanswered and wanting more ... onto the subtle knife . Understandable how they are branded “his dark materials”

Highly recommend this in audible narrated by Philip Pullman himself Iv thoroughly enjoyed listening 👍

Momma_Jo It's been over ten years since I read this series. Might be time to revisit it. I remember absolutely loving it and recommending it to all my friends in seventh grade. Watched the movie when it came out..... Don't remember if I was disappointed by it or not ... 2mo

I heard they were making a HBO show based on a book called His Dark Materials. So I hunted down the book and learned it was a trilogy. When I was done reading it, I noticed it was a Young Readers book. I felt like it was “a bit much” for a young reader. My next thought was “HBO is making a show based on a YOUNG READERS book???” 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Ah, reliving my childhood here! 😭 Much like The Chronicles of Narnia or A Series of Unfortunate Events this was a favorite of mine growing up. I have found I am not as big of a fan of Lyra as I was when I was younger but who knows my opinion my change as I continue my reread of this series.

Powered_By_Plants Just finishing this and the first time reading , I can‘t believe I wasn‘t introduced in my childhood! Looking forward to starting the next one . Have your thoughts changed now your reading again as an adult? x 2mo
jackilynn @Powered_By_Plants so far the only change I have noticed is my opinion on Lyra. I have almost finished book 2 now & I am getting back to liking her again. As an adult now I realize the religious aspects to the story which is something I definitely didn't pick up on as a kid (much like my experience rereading the Chronicles of Narnia). Still very magical though. Happy reading. 2mo

I cannot believe it took me so long to read this. The concepts were creative and much darker than I would‘ve understood if younger. Lyra was an endearing protagonist with flaws and still likeable. And even if you‘ve read it before I would STRONGLY suggest this audiobook version, it‘s fully casted and obsessed with the Mrs. Coulter voice! Just a solid read and exceeded expectations!

I wanted to read this to find out for myself what is the controversy about these books. They were forbidden books for me growing up. The book did deal with kidnapping, child abuse and some characters exhibit appalling disregard for the lives of children. That's disturbing to me, but it is part of why I got so pulled in. The cruelty to these children must be avenged! The story is rich and enchanting. I will be diving into the sequel.

olivia.ferz I'm reading this right now. Just a few more chapters. I didn't know these books were controversial. What was the reason? 5mo
tealwish @olivia.ferz I was told they were the atheist response to Narnia, but I don't get that from the first book at all. Maybe it's anti-organized religion? All I know is I enjoyed it! 5mo

olivia.ferz @tealwish I didn't realize it was anti- anything.😂 For me, it's a well written story about a fantasy world where I'd very much like to go. That's enough reason for me to like a book and read all its other sequels! 5mo

When I read Phillip Pullman‘s The Golden Compass as an elementary schooler, I loved the main character Lyra‘s daemon Pan, who seemed to be a cute little animal sidekick who could give her advice. Welp, I‘ve discovered that he‘s not just a sidekick... he‘s the physical manifestation of her SOUL. Generally speaking, my experience rereading this book as an adult for my podcast revealed how complicated this world is! Link in my bio to listen!

Well that v is supposed to be a y...

This is only the second typo I ever found in a book (the first was cheeerfulness in The Handmaid's Tale). Could also just be that the letter faded partially, but if you compare it to other v's and y's, it seems to really be a typo

Litsy catch up time!
Have you ever read a beloved children‘s book for the first time as an adult? I guess this just wasn‘t for me. I don‘t know if it‘s because I don‘t gravitate toward fantasy that much anymore, or if some childhood books have to be read as a child? I adored A Wrinkle in Time as a kid. Though, when I reread it with my kids, I could see how it is such a strange book and hard to fall into as an adult...
