The Golden Compass
The Golden Compass | Philip Pullman
Published in 40 countries, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy--The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass--has graced the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Book Sense, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. In 1996, The Golden Compass changed the face of fantasy publishing, and 2006 marks its 10 Year Anniversary--and an opportunity to celebrate with a deluxe hardcover. Pullman created new material just for this edition (archival documents, scientific notes and "found" letters of Lord Asriel) which has been illustrated and handlettered by renowned British artist Ian Beck and will be included in the back matter. The deluxe edition also features Pullman's own chapter opening spot art. A quality collectible--with the enticement of never-before-seen new material--for Pullman fans.

A book I have always wanted to read but haven‘t been able to finish.

5 ⭐️s
With a fast-moving plot and deeply complex characters, Pullman crafts a deeply atmospheric and metaphor rich world. Pullman uses his own religious views to create fantastical inversions, all deeply tied to his personal interpretation of Paradise Lost and Christianity. I have SO many feelings about this book; I love the characters and worldbuilding, even if I don't agree with Pullman's religious convictions.

Maybe young adult books are not so bad. I will be reading this trilogy

edit months later: maybe young adult books are not so bad but this trilogy does not prove this sorry it's really messed up

So, I finally finished it again. It‘s an amazing read and one that I can do slowly. I‘ll be picking up Lyra‘s adventures in book 2 here soon.

My edition is called The Northern Lights which Litsy doesn‘t seem to have.

One of the few books I have actually re-read this re-read is so that I can watch season 3 of the TV adaptation and actually follow what is happening 🤣🤣

Still love this story and Lyra

RaeLovesToRead Found it 😊 I think Northern Lights is the UK title & Golden Compass the US. I've been meaning to read it since I was 11 and still haven't got round to it... 2023! 1y

First thing that came to my mind with #Lights was the first book in the excellent ‘His Dark Materials‘ Trilogy by. Philip Pullman and the start of Lyra‘s journey. This book was also published under the title of The Golden Compass. Definitely divine!

It‘s a celebration of the sad & beautiful moments that take you from childhood to being an adult. The adventure is captivating and the theme of institutional power unchecked resonates. Lyra uncovers mysteries around her while navigating her way towards being the adult her world needs.

I didn't read this as a kid and maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had. Although I don't understand why this is considered a children's book...
It was a little too technical for me, the story felt very slow, too much of political banter and there were no funny moments in this book...
I have bigger expectations for Book Two ;) Now - watching it on screen 🎬

I still quite like this book even reading as an adult which is nice to learn. It is still just as dark as I remember but also like? More overtly religious. It‘s not that I remember it as less religious I just thought it was slightly more subtle and it is decidedly not.
Still baffles me that this book is considered 9-12 though
