Letters of Note
Letters of Note: Correspondence Deserving of a Wider Audience | Shaun Usher
Funny, tragic, brilliantly incisive, historic, lyrical, romantic and studiedly offensive, this stupendous compendium of letters ancient and modern is my book of the year. You will never tire of it - Stephen Fry In 2009, while researching a copywriting assignment for a stationery company, Shaun Usher noticed that the internet was full of facsimiles of letters. He started to collect the ones that appealed to him and the more he looked, the more interesting and memorable material he found. Soon, he was sitting on a rich trove of letters, telegrams, and memos that he felt were worth sharing. To do that he started a blog: www.lettersofnote.com, which quickly became the internet's most popular online museum of correspondence. Shaun's inspired selection and quirky juxtapositions turned the site into a virtual anthology, one that demanded a more permanent form. The result is Letters of Note, a collection of 150 of the best letters Shaun has found, each reproduced with a short introduction and transcript and bound into a book. Inside, the famous and infamous, the significant and the insignificant, the noble and the ignoble rub shoulders with one another. From the Queen's personal recipe for drop scones sent to President Eisenhower to the first recorded use of the expression OMG in a letter to Winston Churchill, from distraught fans of Elvis Presley begging the army not to cut his hair to a Kamikaze pilot writing to his two young children on the night before his mission, Letters of Note is a beautifully orchestrated sequence of fragments that captures the humour, seriousness, sadness and brilliance that make up our lives.

Ram Dass on the death of a child: “Is anyone strong enough to stay conscious through such teaching [meaning great suffering] you are receiving?” Not from the tagged book but another compiled by Usher called Grief.

From French writer Colette on finding a letter from her long dead mother: “How strange: one can successfully “hold” oneself very well in the hardest hours. But then, someone makes a friendly gesture behind a window, one notices a blossom which was just a bud yesterday - or a letter slips from a drawer - and everything falls apart.”

For a long time I couldn‘t bring myself to check the sound because I knew it wouldn‘t why are you on my mobile device but just now, while I was downloading e-books on my e-reader I decided to see if it would run on my computer. And what shall I say❓It does. I already listened to the first letter. Queen Elizabeth II writing her omelette-recipe down for Dwight Eisenhower. 🙂 A funny little introduction.

🖌Reading this put me in mourning for the lost art of letter writing. I enjoyed this book so much. I was surprised, amused and moved by it. Every page brought something different. A really lovely book to dip in and out of.📫

Behind Dec 1 door number 1 for my #Adventrecommends are these 3 books. I love the heartfelt emotions these letters pour out on the page. Each one is a walk through history as it affects common individuals. They would make a great supplement for a history class or the perfect gift for a history buff in your life. I recommend these all the time and can‘t do so enough.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I recently read this through Libby and I wish I had a little bit longer than the 21 day loan period to savor this book of letters. So many fascinating letters from everyday people to famous and historical people like Elvis Presley, Queen Elizabeth, Roald Dahl, Churchill, Einstein and Da Vinci. At times there were photographed copies of the written letters. Truly an interesting read.

megnews I love this book and find myself referring back to it often. 5y

One of my favorite “coffee table” books I own is “Letters of Note”, a compilation of various letters of correspondence including a letter from Queen Elizabeth II to president Eisenhower including her scone recipe. But one of the letters that‘s always fascinated me is this one written by someone claiming to be Jack the Ripper

Another fabulous letter from @TrishB - such a pleasure to receive your lovely thoughtful letters 😁😁 Thank you so much for the bookish goodies - too kind. I love the bag - illustrations by Axel Scheffler have been a big part of my life these past few years. Fantastic coaster, bookmarks and postcards - the 'Early Warning Signs of Fascism' one looks horribly familiar! Another great pin for my collection too. 😘😘 Enjoy tonight!! #litsypenpals

E. B. White's words are just as relevant now as they were in1973. Perhaps more so.

"Man's curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that the same traits will enable him to claw his way out."

Got back last night. I just finished going through ALL of the email since we left. Yes, it took most of the day. Now I am taking a hot bath, and no I'm not going outside. I'll see if I can brain enough to read afterward.

I received Letters of Note Vol. 1 from my parents for Christmas 2014 & thought it was the prettiest book I'd ever seen. So I was thrilled when I won Vol. 2 from the #LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. (My first time to EVER win an online book giveaway!) Only 40 pages in so far, but Vol. 2 seems to have the same combo of beautiful, high-quality images & a diverse array of letters as Vol. 1. Definitely recommend these to any lover of letters!

Could there a book that, in some way, appeals to everyone? If it is possible, Jess would lay a solid bet that Letters of Note could be that book.
