The Cruel Prince
The Cruel Prince | Holly Black
By #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue. Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe. Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences. In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

Just not the right book for me. My mind couldn‘t connect the human world and the fairy world. Not that I necessarily had to but I wanted to. I just couldn‘t get into this book. I couldn‘t like any of the characters. I‘m VERY impartial about this book.

April was a good reading month (1 bingo! Yay!), and I seem to have kept up pretty well on #aam, #roll100, and #bookspin/#doublespin! Favorite challenge read was, surprisingly enough, the tagged YA politics and fantasy set in a faerie realm. I didn‘t love the formulaic YA-ness of it all, but the resolutions and reveals in the last half were slightly unexpected and therefore interesting. I would read the next in the series, and I didn‘t expect that!

I read this book two weeks ago. Then I read it again, and again, and again. I can‘t express the amount this book has changed my life. The worldbuilding was alluring and dark, and the fantasy elements were so engaging. The book as a whole was just heavenly and gave off an otherworldly yet realistic energy I‘ve never found while reading before. I loved how romance is a subplot and not a main focus. This book reached all my expectations and more.

miabaker
The Cruel Prince | Holly Black

“I spent much of my life guarding my heart. I guarded it so well that I could behave as though I didn‘t have one at all. Even now, it is a shabby, worm-eaten, and scabrous thing. But it is yours.”

quote
miabaker
The Cruel Prince | Holly Black

“But kissing Locke never felt the way that kissing Cardan does, like taking a dare to run over knives, like an adrenaline strike of lightning, like the moment when you've swum too far out in the sea and there is no going back, only cold black water closing over your head.”

quote
miabaker
The Cruel Prince | Holly Black

Love love LOVE these quotes.

“Let's have a toast. To the incompetence of our enemies.”

“Because you‘re like a story that hasn‘t happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding of the tale.”

“There‘s always something left to lose.”

“That‘s what comes of hungering for something; you forget to check if it‘s rotten before you gobble it down.”

quote
miabaker
The Cruel Prince | Holly Black

“Nice things don‘t happen in storybooks. Or when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it.”

quote
miabaker
The Cruel Prince | Holly Black

Two Jude quotes that I feel really show her character development from a timid mortal girl into a mortal hungry for revenge.

“What could I become if I stopped worrying about death, about pain, about anything? If I stopped trying to belong? Instead of being afraid, I could become something to fear.”

“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

I honestly don‘t remember why I put off reading this series for so long, but I definitely regret it. I enjoyed the characters (especially Jude who is a badass),the storyline, and the multiple plot twists. I can‘t wait to see how this story continues!

I read this whole series in one day so it definitely was interesting! A little more slow burn than I expected. I definitely would‘ve liked it better when I was younger but I still quite liked the series and dynamic between Jude and Cardan!

So I hear about santas little helpers and my brain goes elves. My brain says elves and I think Holly Black. Her Tithe books were so huge for me in my preteen years and even though I barely read YA anymore I read this whole series and I loved it so much.

Having said that, I don‘t think these elves would do a good job helping Father Christmas.

The Cruel Prince is about a mortal girl, Jude Duarte, who tries to navigate a world of hate, betrayal, and her complicated and growing feeling towards her enemy. Jude is forced to grow up in Faerie land alongside her two sisters after being whisked away and raised by their parents' murderer.

Mmeso Ifebuzor As a mortal, living in a realm of immortal magic, Jude feels powerless at her own weakness. Between her mortality and lack of magical ability, she faces a grave disadvantage in earning power and prestige. However is determined to prove herself as more than a mere mortal, by being chosen as a knight in faerie court. (edited) 6mo
Mmeso Ifebuzor The biggest theme in The Cruel Prince, that cruelty of one person pressures others to be just as cruel. Most characters in the novel repay the cruelty they received back to other characters. Balekin‘s abuse towards Cardan, caused him to become twisted, causing him to be cruel to Jude and those weaker than him. Jude is mean to others because that is how Madoc taught her to survive, and the cruelty he displayed in front of her. 6mo
Mmeso Ifebuzor The cruel prince is written in first-person. The magical yet fatal land of Faerie is seen vividly through the eyes of the main protagonist, Jude.
This book is perfect for you, if you like mystery, fantasy, with a tad bit of romance. Personally, I loved it as you can see great character development in both Jude and Cardan as well as the growth between their relationship.

Jude is a mortal girl who lives in Faerie with her faerie family after her parents were murdered. She wants to be a knight but Madoc, her “dad“, forbids her! Jude is tired of being a powerless mortal so she strikes a deal with a prince and defies Madoc. What could go wrong? I would recommend this book to someone who likes action, fantasy, and unpredictability. One of the themes of this book is how the cruelty of others affects a person .

MissYaremcio I loved this series! But totally through Sarah J. Maas was a better writer than Holly Black! 5/6 I was just missing a bit more on the theme. 6mo

Finally read this after so long of reading all the hype about the series. I did like it and found I liked it more the farther I got in the story. Jude is a character worth rooting for. I felt there were some parts of the story that were rushed/muddled and the world building was only okay. But, I went right to the library and grabbed the next 2 books so that really says it all. So far not my favorite YA fantasy, but we will see!

I can't say it lived up to what I was expecting from the hype but here I am immediately reading the next book. I think a lot of what's supposed to make the prince "cruel" is kind of overblown or assumed or just downright unsupported but maybe that was in the blurry first third of the book I read at a bar. I'm definitely appreciating the book more for Jude's transformation and scheming.

I‘m struggling a bit trying to find the connection to the characters or the writing. I‘m only 30 pages in and I hope I find the groove

Nute I should get better about doing this, but I very give up on a book. Usually I put it down for a few days, sometimes read something else in between, and then come back to it for another go. Some books make the story worthwhile well past the three-quarter mark or not until the end. 10mo

Finally got around to reading this book. I‘ve been on a YA fantasy kick lately. It was an entertaining read overall, but my dislike of Jude‘s POV at points made me wish this was a multiple perspective book.🤷‍♀️ #YAFantasy

majkia I bailed on this one because of my dislike for the POV. 10mo
Bknrdadventures @majkia Yes, Jude as the lone perspective is not as complex or interesting as the book could have been. She‘s not even the most complex character in the book. 4mo
