The Lost Queen
The Lost Queen: A Novel | Signe Pike
The Mists of Avalon meets the world of Philippa Gregory in the thrilling first novel of a debut trilogy that reveals the untold story of Languoretha forgotten queen of sixth-century Scotlandtwin sister of the man who inspired the legend of Merlin. I write because I have seen the darkness that will come. Already there are those who seek to tell a new history... In a land of mountains and mist, tradition and superstition, Languoreth and her brother Lailoken are raised in the Old Way of their ancestors. But in Scotland, a new religion is rising, one that brings disruption, bloodshed, and riot. And even as her family faces the burgeoning forces of Christianity, the Anglo-Saxons, bent on colonization, are encroaching from the east. When conflict brings the hero Emrys Pendragon to her fathers door, Languoreth finds love with one of his warriors. Her deep connection to Maelgwn is forged by enchantment, but she is promised in marriage to Rhydderch, son of a Christian king. As Languoreth is catapulted into a world of violence and political intrigue, she must learn to adapt. Together with her brothera warrior and druid known to history as MyrddinLanguoreth must assume her duty to fight for the preservation of the Old Way and the survival of her kingdom, or risk the loss of them both forever. Based on new scholarship, this tale of bravery and conflicted love brings a lost queen back to liferescuing her from obscurity, and reaffirming her place at the center of one of the most enduring legends of all time.

Holy cliffhanger, Batman. And this is why I don‘t normally read books in a series until they‘re all out.

Clutterbucks_Queen I'm like that with books and TV programmes haha! I always wait for the full series to be out before i venture into it! I'm too impatient to wait! 3d

Very well narrated! Fascinating era. I liked the idea of the clash between Christianity and paganism, I wish there had been more development of that theme. I loved the natural descriptions and there are passages of very sensitive & lyrical writing. I also appreciated the feminine perspective - I was worried it was going to contain long descriptions of men fighting battles. I had to 🙄 over the romance & sex scenes.

UnidragonFrag I always have to 🙄 the sex scenes, especially in audiobooks which makes it even more awkward. 2w
Tamra @UnidragonFrag exactly. It doesn‘t add anything to the plot or character devo. 2w
UnidragonFrag Typically, no. I don't care if characters do and sometimes it does develop characters, but descriptions of it don't add anything. Just fade to black or something. If I wanted all that descriptions, I'd read erotica. 2w

I loved this historical fiction set in 6th century Wales. Lots of drama - conflicts between the Old Ways and the new Christians, good detail about the times, and a decent love story. Recommended!

lele1432 I'm really enjoying this one! Hopefully can dive back in it tonight! 2w

This is book one of an eventual trilogy, based on ancient Scottish history, with connections to the Merlin legend. It took me some time to get into the rhythm of the narrative, but once I did, I was hooked. Rich in detail, this story follows Langoureth, a daughter of a Scottish king, who becomes enmeshed in the religious struggles between the “Old Way” and Christianity. It will be so hard to wait for book two to come out! #LiteraryCrew #buddyread

It‘s the last week for #LiteraryCrew ‘a #buddyread of the tagged book! I‘ve enjoyed seeing everyone‘s posts, and depending upon how things go, I‘m hoping to finish the readings up today.

Over the last few readings, I‘ve really grown to enjoy the story. It took me awhile to get into the rhythm of the telling, but now I‘m really hooked. It will be hard to wait until next summer for book two!

Any thoughts to share for last week‘s reading?

Librarybelle Also, any suggestions for our next read? We usually read historical fiction. I plan to look through my shelves this week for suggestions. 3w

Finished this one well ahead of our #LiteraryCrew schedule. I was enjoying too much to put it down. Great characters, and I loved how it brings to life a period and place in history (6th century Scotland) that almost never features in historical fiction. Week 2 Check in - how is going for everyone? Any thoughts to share thus far? My thoughts are below under a spoiler. #literarycrew #buddyread

Librarybelle I‘m liking this so far. Definitely a slow burn for me - I feel like I have to take my time to read each sentence. I don‘t mind that! I hardly know anything about this era, so I find it fascinating to see these two religions come to battle, of sorts. This week‘s section moves us into Part 2, where Languoreth is a few years older and near marriage age. It‘ll be interesting to see what happens next! 2mo
Mishu94 I really want to read this trilogy but I don‘t know whether I should go for it or not :/ 2mo

Prairiegirl_reading Homegoing and the heart‘s invisible furies. Not new but I haven‘t been blown away by anything lately. I hope these help anyway. 6mo
CharissaWeaksAuthor @Prairiegirl_reading Thank you! I‘m struggling to hang with any audio since The Lost Queen and The Secret History of Witches, both of which I loved. 6mo
Melissa_J I‘m not a fan of audiobooks (I can‘t stay focused on them), but I had a bad bout of vertigo a few years back and couldn‘t read. Audiobooks were my only option. I listened to this one and absolutely loved it - the narrators were perfect 6mo

This was a white lady guilty pleasure book for me, and I loved it. It‘s marketed as Outlander meets Mists of Avalon, but it seems way less racy than Outlander (based on what little I‘ve read & trailers I‘ve seen). So Outlander fans - don‘t get your hopes up here. This book is far more about political intrigue than burning romance. But if you‘re in for medieval women manipulating the patriarchy, check this out!

This book is AWESOME.

The writing is strong, the characters are realistic, the story is engrossing. The author‘s note is even excellent... Pike has taken what might be the truth behind the legend of Merlin and spun it into a beautiful historical fiction saga focused on his twin sister and her medieval smashing of the patriarchy.

The audio narration is fantastic, but I‘m so getting this book in print. Can‘t wait for the next book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book has been good since the beginning, but holy buckets... I just listened to the chapter with the pagan midsummer festival twice because it‘s amazingly gorgeous. 😍

I have a feeling I will be buying a hard copy of this book, but the audio is so good. The narrator has a beautiful voice and Scottish accent.

I love Mists of Avalon and most narratives influenced by early British and Celtic mythology, so I was pretty much guaranteed to love this book. And it did not disappoint.

This is more of a straightforward historical novel than Mists of Avalon, but it‘s very well done. And, like Mists, it centers in large part on the shift from the old gods and goddesses worshipped by the early peoples of Britain to Christianity. Overall, fascinating and lovely.

booksandsympathy I have her book A Faery Tale about her search for faeries in Mexico, England, Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Mann. I loved it. This sounds really fantastic. 9mo
businessmermaid @booksandsympathy I read about that one on her website — it sounds great and I want to check it out! I highly recommend this one. It‘s supposed to be the first in a trilogy. 9mo
Crazeedi I can't wait to read this!!! 9mo

Oh I actually did a real review for this one and it's long so go to GR for that but I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. It follows a forgotten queen from 6th century Scotland who was the twin of the man believed to have developed into the myth of Merlin.

If you like historical fictions where you can tell the author studied the FUCK of the time, place and people, you'll like this. Not fast paced but steady with lots of political and religious drama

Crazeedi Want to read!!! 9mo
GingerAntics I‘ll have this give this a shot. 9mo

I haven't really heard anything about this but it's medieval historical fiction which is kinda my jam and I'm still feeling the after effects of Sweet Black Waves so hopefully this will help

DGRachel I got a free ebook copy of this one, but I haven‘t gotten to it yet. 9mo
