From letter 79 to Cassandra:

“but she really does seem to admire Elisabeth. I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know.

Idk what Mr. Digweed did, so in absence of any factual information, I will just assume some very Willoughby-level f*ckboy stuff because that‘s more fun. 😉

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this story, crossing between the contemporary family's story line and with old letters between twin sisters of an earlier time. The letters really made you know those characters just as much as the protagonist and I had built up some false hope for the endings so I was sad that it didn't go the way of my imagination but it did end with some great fuzzy feelings!

Pickpick

I finished this ahead of schedule, because this edition is obviously the shorter one. It's weird to rate a writer's personal correspondence, but it did make me feel like I had Jane near. There is a singular voice & character throughout these letters, which also made me a touch sad: I felt the *realest* Jane, though expressed to her sister, was still very much under wraps. Very bittersweet as the letters bring us closer to her death. #pemberlittens

Ann_Reads A nice review, Batsy, and you're right. How can or does a reader rate a collection of private letters that weren't written with the intent of being placed in the public eye? (Of course it will be a “pick“ from me, as I'm really enjoying JA's humorous side, among other things.) 🙂 20h

sprainedbrain It is very bittersweet. 💔 20h
batsy @Ann_Reads Yes, it just feels odd to have to decide on rating scale! But just like you, it's an automatic pick because she's one of my faves and so be default I'm ready to learn more about her 🙂 I agree, she has wit in spades & is always looking for ways to amuse her readers, in her novel and her letters. 18h
batsy @kspenmoll I love the cover, as well! 18h

From letter 77 to Martha Lloyd:

“P. & P. is sold. - Egerton gives 648 for it. - I would rather have had 668, but we could not both be pleased”

😂

Letter 71 also has this mention of Sense & Sensibility:

‘No indeed, I am never too busy to think of S&S. I can no more forget it, than a mother can forget her sucking child; & I am much obliged to you for your enquiries.‘

BiblioLitten 😁😁 2d
Ruthiella I remember that bit about the novel being as important to her as a child to its mother from the Lucy Worsley bio. 2d
batsy I meant to keep track but it felt like there was more than one instance that she referred to her books as her children. Plus that line about their nephew 😂 2d

From letter 74 to Cassandra:

“I will not say that your Mulberry trees are dead, but I am afraid they are not alive.”

🤣🤣🤣

Jane Austen really knows how to put. I also think this is one of the very few quotes from her letters I knew before I started reading them.

Ruthiella I love that quote. It‘s almost Monty Pythonesque! 😂 3d
