Brideshead Revisited | Evelyn Waugh

Bookwormjillk I haven‘t finished the chapter yet but those dinner scenes had me rolling. I love this book. 1w
Ruthiella In my limited experience, this chapter with its snarky humor is more typical of his other novels (The Loved One and A Handful of Dust). 1w

mcctrish If surviving dinners with his father does not encourage savings going forward, nothing will 1w
willaful Dad is a piece of work! Though given that he already provided Charles with an ample allowance, I can't entirely blame him for playing dumb.

So I'm guessing Charles used up the last of his money rushing to Sebastian's bedside? Hmmm....
1w
dabbe @mcctrish 😂😂😂 1w
dabbe I can't help but compare Charles and Sebastian's relationship to Gene and Finny's in A SEPARATE PEACE, though this one they're in college, and there's definitely more humor. Pretty much similar time periods as well. And how dumb am I? I had no idea Mr. Waugh pronounced his name as EVE-luhn. I'm thoroughly enjoying this book. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t believe a word anyone says in this book. This is not a complaint. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Why didn‘t Sebastian invite Charles earlier if he wanted him around so badly?! 😂 Also, dunno if Dad is thinking explicitly “hmm, perhaps my son is gay” but I love him commenting that he wouldn‘t turn up at his friend‘s deathbed because the friend‘s wife wouldn‘t like it. 1w
KAO I chuckled aloud when I read Sebastian‘s brief letter to Charles actually dated: “I wonder what day it is”—and I thought to myself that I could easily and honestly date my next letter to a friend this same way instead of checking my calendar to give the impression that I have my life under control with an accurate date! (edited) 1w
KAO I‘m enjoying this book too—and am pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor! 1w
ElizaMarie @willaful I agree! I think the dad is purposely playing dumb about the $ because he knows his son squandered it away —- I love the dad‘s attitude! (edited) 1w
ElizaMarie So far the book is pretty funny! These characters! @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t believe anyone either!!!! All the dramatics! 1w
Sparklemn @KAO This was my favorite line of the chapter! 😆 1w
lil1inblue I so agree with @bookwormjillk the dinner scenes were uproariously hilarious. I love Waugh's humor! 7d
lil1inblue @dabbe You're nailing these comparisons! It's been a while, but I definitely feel hints of A Separate Peace. 7d
willaful @KAO yes, that was a hoot... And very Sebastian, I think. 7d
dabbe @lil1inblue IKR? 💜🧡💛 6d
julieclair I think the dad is my favorite character! 3d

Ruthiella Why the about-face? What is Mrs. Gibson up to? 3mo
Lcsmcat No spoilers, but I‘ve read ahead (sorry!) and Mrs G hasn‘t suddenly developed character. 3mo

Cuilin @Lcsmcat why am I not surprised! 3mo
Cuilin @Ruthiella does she know about Osborne so she‘s moved on to the younger son, perhaps? 3mo
Cuilin It‘s nice to see Mr Hamley appreciate Roger but who tells one son the other son used to be his favorite?? #ParentFail 3mo
AllDebooks @Lcsmcat no surprises there! Scheming minx 3mo
mcctrish Roger is just doomed - only has fellowship if he doesn‘t marry but still courts Cynthia and gives all of his money to O. #hambleyofhambley has got a real thorn in his side with the French 🎶I was defeated, you won the war🎶 why can‘t he be a gracious winner ? I‘m happy he‘s proud of Roger but my heart still breaks for Molly 3mo
willaful @Cuilin The Squire is one big #ParentFail! 3mo
ElizaMarie @Cuilin ha! I thought that same :( like a backhanded complement there. 3mo

dabbe All they want to do is bitch about how much the family is ruined, yet they won't lift a finger to help--even though they have the money to do it! #beyondannoyed 🤬 5mo
AllDebooks These vile people are causing so much more angst. Jog on, ladies 😡 5mo

Bookwormjillk They‘re the worst and Mrs Tully is getting on my nerves too. 5mo
Leftcoastzen Nothing brings a family together like money troubles! The ones that could help are spreading the misery. 🙄😡 5mo
Clare-Dragonfly Mrs. Glegg is soooooooo obnoxious! 5mo
ElizaMarie The teapots!!! 5mo
julieclair Mrs. Moss is the only one who seems to care at all about the family. 5mo

TheAromaofBooks While I can't like Maggie's dad as a person (so far anyway) I do appreciate that he thinks the world of Maggie. 5mo
mcctrish I think Maggie grew up a bit today. 5mo

Clare-Dragonfly I‘m glad Maggie didn‘t get any deeper into trying to teach them than she did, or they might have gotten upset! As it is they were kind people. 5mo
julieclair @mcctrish Agreed. She learned a bit about the world. And thankfully made it home safe and sound! 5mo
Bookwormjillk I had to laugh at the idea of Maggie just running into her Dad. That must have been a shock. 5mo
ElizaMarie I love the fact that she really thought she would be fit to be Queen of the Gypsies 5mo
Morr_Books @ElizaMarie 🤣 Don't know that the thimble was enough to buy her that role. 5mo
Leftcoastzen Imagine! No tea ! How COULD someone be queen of the Gypsies & live that way ? 😁They were ultimately kind, her father was beside himself 5mo
dabbe Wonder how long Mrs. T and Tom will leave Maggie alone? 🤔 Bets, anyone? 5mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe not long 🤣🤣 5mo

mcctrish @Bookwormjillk I was just skimming along and then “wait what?! Ludo is here?!” Truthfully I thought for sure they were banditti but then I thought they were hunters and maybe V was with them (edited) 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly Something actually happened!!! @mcctrish I also thought V would turn out to be with them. 9mo
peanutnine I was like oh now we finally get to hear what happened to Ludo! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Just kidding 9mo

BarkingMadRead @peanutnine #obviously 🤷🏻‍♀️ this is usually the point where I would binge read the end, but I feel like I still wouldn‘t know anything, so why bother 🤣 @Bookwormjillk #hallelujah 9mo
TheAromaofBooks I gotta be honest, I freaking love Annette and her complete inability to keep a secret 😂 9mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks without Annette, we wouldn‘t know a damn thing 🤣 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly There doesn‘t seem to be much acknowledgement that Annette‘s husband has disappeared! 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly Linguistic note: I see that Annette has switched from calling Emily “mamselle” to “madam”! This matches up with something I noted in the book I just finished—in English, Mrs was for a long time just a title of respect for an adult woman of a certain class, even if she wasn‘t married. The Mrs versus Miss for marital status distinction wasn‘t solidified until the mid-19th century. Emily is probably Madam now that she‘s inherited. (edited) 9mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhh that‘s interesting! And poor Ludo ☠️ 9mo

mcctrish In the words of me “WTF?!” 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly So, just like with Ludo, we get the Count‘s POV when nothing interesting is going on, and then something happens and we don‘t get to know anything about it. 🤨 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Someone needs to rewrite this book except with the interesting parts actually IN THE STORY 🙄 9mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Yes! And leaving out 80% of the #verdantverdure . 9mo
