Let's Pretend This Never Happened
Let's Pretend This Never Happened | Jenny Lawson
From the New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy...When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.In the irreverent Lets Pretend This Never Happened, Lawsons long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human momentsthe ones we want to pretend never happenedare the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives. Includes a new chapter!Readers Guide InsideFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

Started out strong; the stories are hilarious and the tone and overall voice is really enjoyable. The author is the voice actor, which adds to the appeal and overall quality. About midway, however, the humor becomes redundant and the voice grows grating. I couldn't help but make the mental comparison of this book to the asinine, abrasive youtube videos my son's watch. Once that idea was there, I found the book harder to enjoy.

There were parts that made me laugh and it's unfair but I liked Lawson's second book Furiously Happy so much this was just okay.

Anyone who can make you laugh out loud when writing about depression and other mental health issues is a genius. This is a thought provoking story that makes you reframe preconceived ideas about disorders related to mental health, but it is done with an amazing self- depricating wit. I can hardly wait to read more from her!

Soubhiville I love her books so much! 5mo
Come-read-with-me @Soubhiville She is a great writer. I read Furiously Happy on a long flight and laugh out loud at parts! 5mo

It wouldn‘t be a holiday for me if I wasn‘t at some point off in a corner reading while my family played together (in this case, bags). I forgot my book, so I am doing a reread of this gem that I bought for my sister years ago and she refused to read. Ugh. I‘m laughing out loud and they are looking at my like I‘m crazy. Jenny Lawson would appreciate this.

I had to bail on this one. I really liked her other book Furiously Happy, but I just couldn‘t sustain enough interest in this one. It felt more like reading a blog. At least it seems her writing got better in her later book! I have a hard time not finishing books but I‘ve got too many in my TBR list (and another library loan ending soon!).

Jenny Lawson has me laughing throughout this entire book! 😂😂😂

I usually try to read at night when my kids are sleeping but this is an actual laugh out loud kind of book that must be read during the day, while not drinking any kind of beverage.

TheKidUpstairs I tried to read her second book at night while my husband slept beside me, but in my efforts to not laugh out loud I was shaking the bed so hard it kept waking him up! 10mo

This was really fun to listen to—I highly suggest listening to the audiobook. If even half of the stuff in the book is mostly true, her life is completely outrageous. The only negative thing I can think to say about this was that she sang the name of each chapter, which was kind of annoying.

This is my favorite book. There‘s a reason why it is so popular, with the readers ability to connect to even the most absorb parts. I think everyone should read it, for both it‘s ability to describe mental illness in a way most books can‘t and it‘s ability to maintain its humorous tone at even the most serious parts.

THIS. #AnthonyBourdain #KitchenConfidential

Listening to talk around me at work, despairing at how uninformed people are about depression/mental illness. "People who kill themselves do us a favor if they're that unhappy" & "How can they cry 'depressed' when they want for nothing?" are some representative comments. I'm rarely on FB but opened it a few minutes ago and this was at the top of my feed. Sharing it forward. ?
