Kiss Her Once for Me
Kiss Her Once for Me | Alison Cochrun
The author of the "swoon-worthy debut" (Harper's Bazaar) The Charm Offensive returns with a festive romantic comedy about a woman who fakes an engagement with her landlord...only to fall for his sister. One year ago, recent Portland transplant Ellie Oliver had her dream job in animation and a Christmas Eve meet-cute with a woman at a bookstore that led her to fall in love over the course of a single night. But after a betrayal the next morning and the loss of her job soon after, she finds herself adrift, alone, and desperate for money. Finding work at a local coffee shop, she's just getting through the days--until Andrew, the shop's landlord, proposes a shocking, drunken plan: a marriage of convenience that will give him his recent inheritance and alleviate Ellie's financial woes and isolation. They make a plan to spend the holidays together at his family cabin to keep up the ruse. But when Andrew introduces his new fiance to his sister, Ellie is shocked to discover it's Jack--the mysterious woman she fell for over the course of one magical Christmas Eve the year before. Now, Ellie must choose between the safety of a fake relationship and the risk of something real. Perfect for fans of Written in the Stars and One Day in December, Kiss Her Once for Me is the queer holiday rom-com that you'll want to cozy up with next to the fire.

A Natalie Naudus narrated book!! I'm getting a feeling there's a theme behind the books she narrates bc this one also features a #queer asian woman and her #mentalhealth crisis. Oh, and #romance! It's told in flashbacks which made it a little confusing at times in audio format but I did enjoy the drama, the friendship, and even the pain/lessons learned. It is a little spicy and the MC is very Very thirsty/ there's a lot of ✨ pining ✨

This was a nice cozy romance to start my new year. While it was a nice light read, the plot wasn‘t really there for me. I have to agree with a lot of the criticism this book got. I‘m demisexual, and I didn‘t think the representation was really there with Ellie‘s character. I also hated how all of the other characters, but especially Jack, treated her. I felt like Jack owed Ellie a big apology, not the other way around.

I loved this book so much. It is probably one of my favorites this year. It‘s perfect for Christmas time and whereas it is a little bit cliched in some ways, I still really enjoyed it because it did have some unique perspectives and it was very different than what I thought when I first picked it up. Super warm and fuzzy for a cold winter to make you feel happy.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ What a sweet Christmas romance! Two very different women meet one snowy day in Portland, have an epic day and evening together, but then a misunderstanding separated them. Full of a great supporting cast (especially the grannies) and tons of humor, this was the perfect holiday read. From airstream trailers, to a bakery called the Butch Oven, I was both swooning and snickering. Also loved that the mc broke the dysfunctional family loop.

ChaoticMissAdventures This is on my list! I really loved her other book and I live in Portland, so I feel like this is a must read. So glad you liked it - from what I hear the geography of the town is spot on. 5mo

Now this is EVERYTHING a Christmas rom com is meant to be. Silly, fun, romantic, and genuinely touching. So few rom coms get both the humour and the meaningful side of things perfectly right and this absolutely did. I loved the big silly fake dating queer love triangle (or many-gendered trapezoid) and I loved the touching material about taking risks and overcoming perfectionism. Pretty flawless!

I spent a goodly portion of today buying ingredients for my contribution to the birthday feast I‘m headed to tomorrow, then assembling some of those ingredients into a potato chip pie. Now I get to eat a piece of the overflow pie I made to use up the extra filling and finish KISS HER ONCE FOR ME! It‘s extremely obvious where this book‘s gonna end up, but I‘m still enjoying the ride.

This week‘s library haul. I probably should‘ve stuck to my two holds (MORTAL FOLLIES and NETTLE & BONE), what with how slowly I‘m reading right now, but I figured I should start laying in some holiday romances; hence the tagged book. Then they had an anthology of classic queer poetry, and a manga short fiction collection, and I DID manage to resist the classic Chinese novel but lemme tell you, it was a close one.

Merry Christmas in July! This one was heavier than the cover copy made me expect, but that didn't make me enjoy it less. Ellie and Jack are both so wounded that it balances the rom-commy premise nicely, and all the side characters are the absolute best (minus Linds and Alex, but they don't count). For someone who likes their holidays with a little more heft! #christmasromance #contemporaryromance

I don‘t usually read contemporary romance, they tend to be too trendy and fluffy for my taste ( Where‘s the angst and morally grey, definitely problematic love interest??) BUT wow!! This was SO CUTE. I LOVED Ellie and Jack (Jack was 🔥) I loved all the tropes and all the quipy characters. This book made me cry, it had the feels and the sap and I really had fun reading it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #gaymay 🏳️‍🌈 #BOTM

I should have taken a picture of Kiss Her Once For Me by Allison Cochrun with a loaf of bread instead of flowers.

Main character said love interest who was a baker smelled like bread. 16 Times! And one "the way her touch is like a lightning rod and a warm piece of bread." WTF⁉️ Don't remember baker ever making bread in this book. Cookies, waffles, pancakes, and breakfast burritos but no bread. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Don't get me wrong there was a lot I loved about this While You Were Sleeping vibes romance. Especially weed smoking, day drinking grandmas Memaw and Lovey. Nice to see diverse and inclusive romance. But honestly this book just wore me out. ⬇️

14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Instead of Love Triangle there was Quadrangle. LITERALLY had EVERY romance trope: Fake marriage, second chance romance, miscommunication, only one bed, in love with best friend, trapped in snowstorm and probably a few I'm forgetting. ⬇️ 14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I spent majority of the time yelling at the page. "JUST TELL HER" and "YOU ARE BROKE AND ABOUT TO BE EVICTED" do not let your mother guilt trip you in to sending her money. ⬇️
14mo
See All 9 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig Favorite Quote: "Your mom sucks the most suck of all the people who suck that aren't like war criminals or Republican senators."

I think I would have enjoyed more if it had been a Novella. For me it was just too busy and went on way too long. But hey if you love an over the top romance this one may be for you.???

Forgot to post this one! It was my last read of 2022 - perfect in the way that it‘s Christmasy and wintery in all the traditional ways. I couldn‘t quite get into it though. I‘m not a huge fan of romance books but I‘ll usually tear thru the sapphic ones… and I mean, I enjoyed parts of it… but halfway thru I just kinda got tired of it, as the plot is pretty predictable. If you‘re a hopeless romantic, go for it!

Another book that I read for a book club but this time I was pleasantly surprised. A meet-cute turned love trapezoid! I loved how saucy (even though it was pretty predictable) the plot was. The story was well written and the author had me invested in all of the characters‘ lives — loved the representation in this book! I only didn‘t like how most of the characters problems could have been solved through communication 😅

AbigailJaneBlog I actually am a bi/demi sexual with GAD who has recently finished their master's degree so I actually found this really validating, but I was frustrated that Ellie did not make good decisions to look after herself. It reminded me to take better care of my mental health. 1y
peanutnine I thought the queer representation was great. I've noticed that demisexual rep had become a bit more prevalent in LGBTQ fiction lately, which is awesome because I didn't really know much about it before. The author is demi herself so it's really nice to have own voices telling these stories. 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @peanutnine I didn't know she was demi, nor have I come across it in any other books! If you have some recommendations I'd love to hear them! 1y
See All 10 Comments
peanutnine @AbigailJaneBlog of course! Her debut The Charm Offensive also has a demi main character (and as much as I liked KHOFM I think Charm was even better). Never Been Kissed by Timothy Janovsky and the Dating Disaster by Saxon James were two good ones I read this past year. Also the Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood and Radio Silence by Alice Oseman have rep 🙂 1y
MoonWitch94 I had heard of Demi, but this was the first time I have read a character that ID‘ed as such. It was interesting to read a MC with this identity. I‘m sure it was super validating for you @AbigailJaneBlog & I‘m glad the writer is as well. Always nice to add that extra bit of authenticity. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly I didn‘t read the book (couldn‘t get it from the library in time), but my husband is demisexual so it‘s really nice to hear about demi rep in a romance! 😍 1y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @AbigailJaneBlog it's an m/f pairing, but The Mistletoe Motive by Chloe Liese has a demi heroine, and also autistic and diabetes representation! I really liked it. 1y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I loved how queer this book felt in all the details of the dialogue, the side characters, and the references. I love when a romance like this is not only queer because of the characters' identities, but like the book's whole worldview! 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I'm also autistic and dating a bisexual man, so that sounds great! 😅😂 I also agree with this idea of a queer lense - it did feel very central! 1y

AbigailJaneBlog I loved the grandmas and their relationship - definitely my favourites! 1y
peanutnine The grandmas were great! My favorite character I think was Dylan. I liked how they went for what they wanted and didn't back down heartbroken when they saw Andrew engaged but instead became more determined to win him back. They were also sarcastic and witty and not afraid to say what everyone was thinking which I loved for some comic relief 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @peanutnine agreed, I loved the idea of a teacher with a knife neck tattoo. 1y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Oh yeah the grandmas were awesome! I also really liked Ellie's coworker from the cafe who offered her place for Ellie to live. She was very funny! I don't know why I can't remember her name! 1y

AbigailJaneBlog I actually wasn't a fan of the romance in this book. I loved the friendship and family relationships, but I found the relationship a little... obsessive? I'm not really sure how else to describe it. 1y
Kenyazero I did! I wasn't sure at first because she seemed pretty hooked for a love at first sight, but it grew on me pretty fast! I also enjoyed the sideplot romance. 1y
peanutnine I did like the romance. What stood out to me was the "queer lady communication" bit - it was refreshing to see them discussing their feelings instead of holding back. It made the instalove more believable. I also really liked the side plot romance with Andrew and Dylan 1y
See All 6 Comments
AbigailJaneBlog Totally agree with you folks on the side romance - I was waayyy more invested in Dylan and Andrew! And I think you're right, the "queer lady communication" was refreshing; I just wish there had been more communication outside the queer relationship. 1y
MoonWitch94 @AbigailJaneBlog I actual completely agree with you. While I appreciated the QLC bc it was nice to see actual communication in a relationship, I was more invested in Andrew & Dylan. And I think “obsessive” is the right label. 1y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I loved it and didn't find anything off or obsessive about the main romance, although I did appreciate that the subplot romance was also queer. Really enjoyed this #lgbtq hooiday romance. Got surprisingly invested in the characters.

Megara I get the title's Christmas song reference, but my first reaction was, "oh! Is this a reference of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash's song "Girl From The North Country'?" It has a completely different flavor than the holly jolly Christmas lyric! The line is "Remember me to the one who lives there for she once was a true love of mine." 1y

This was a cute #ownvoices queer romance that worked perfectly for the season, even being at the tail end. My library hold must have hit at the perfect time because for some reason I wasn't feeling the Christmas-ish romance vibe around actual Christmas. But I digress, I love a good flawed character, and while I wasn't nearly as obsessed as I was with Delilah Green, I still found myself rooting for everyone. Would have been a solid #botm pick!

swishandflick PS: my only critique here is that they kinda glossed over that whole "wife" thing that got Ellie in her feelings the first go round. Am I the only one that felt like I was being gaslit into thinking she was "supposed" to take the whole hit for that misunderstanding? ? 1y

Unpopular opinion. Everybody seems to love this book so don‘t read my review☺️Two persons were together for less than 24 hrs and fell deeply in love. One was suffering for this love😳Something happened and during those encounters you will see a lot of cheating and drama. Main character can be annoying. The ending made me think if that relationship is healthy. They play this “honesty game” were words can be so hard. Not for me please.Good things:⬇️

Gissy I liked the unconditional friendship and support Ellie received from Meredith and even by Ari. Representation of demisexual, non-binary and lesbian. I liked also how Jack‘s family supported her. I liked how the author included how to ask the pronouns the person wants to be called. However, I read some comments indicating that the author has misinformation of what is a demisexual person. The cover is so pretty. Read the book mine is unpopular 3⭐️ 1y

Finished this today & it was a solid holiday rom-com. Cute & fun, with diverse characters & a snowy Portland, OR setting (with Powell‘s Books of course) which is always close to my heart. There was a part where the main character‘s lines reminded me of one of my movie rom-com favorites, While You Were Sleeping & then reading the acknowledgements the author said it was once “a poorly fleshed-out, gay WYWS fanfic” & so now I am rewatching it. 😉

I'm back home from Virginia and continuing my quest for holiday spirit with this #BotM pick. I loved her previous book, so hopefully this one will be just as good.

Librariana Agree that your feline friend is GORGE! But my little eyes couldn't help wondering over to the artwork in your book. Is that a postcard or bookmark? Who are the characters? Call me intrigued! 1y
peanutnine @Librariana it's a postcard of the two main characters! It was a bonus gift for those who preordered the book 😊 1y
peanutnine @swishandflick @sarahbellum thanks! she's a menace sometimes but she knows how to play the cute card 😄 1y
swishandflick I know the feeling. I'm a "work from home cat mom" and it's becoming a second full time job keeping her from knocking down the tree ??‍♀️ 1y
