This book was a slow read for me, I struggled to get through this one.
The ending was very shocking and could be triggering for some people.

I wanted to love this so much but it was just too damn disjointed for my tastes. We're tossed into the book at the beginning, which reads like the middle. It didn't really come together for me at all, despite hoping and praying it would eventually all make sense. A few scenes gave me hope, but otherwise, it was not for me. I didn't care about the people. On audio, a lot of the dialogue sounded stunted, with lots of OKs and Yeahs. ⬇️

Lovely writing, very moving and terribly sad. My heart felt so heavy reading about the cruelty, loss and poverty experienced by the twins. As a result, it did make it tough to keep picking up. But I loved the use of folk songs throughout the narrative, and the sense of place was captured flawlessly. Tough read, and not my favorite of hers, but Claire Fuller‘s writing is always just beautiful. 4⭐️

I had this book on a pedestal for years and finally the time came to read it. I‘m a little conflicted because it took a LONG time to get into.

How can I be able to say I loved this book? Yet I did. With all its horror it felt more real and plausible than many other dystopian books. Agustina Bazterrica described the end of humanity extremely well. And that ending. I didn‘t see that coming. But looking back and giving it some more thought it probably was inevitable.

Technology continues to blow me away ~ as I‘m listening to Aeham Ahmad recount his harrowing plight living in the Yarmouk Refugee Camp, I‘m able to view via YouTube his performances. For 4 years he plays piano in defiance. This book is beautiful and heartbreaking. I‘m so happy I found this memoir because of Litsy reading challenges. If you‘re interested go on YouTube. I won‘t watch ahead as I prefer to hear the story from Aeham. 👇🏼
