The Book of Strange New Things
The Book of Strange New Things: A Novel | Michel Faber
A monumental, genre-defying novel that David Mitchell calls "Michel Fabers second masterpiece," The Book of Strange New Things is a masterwork from a writer in full command of his many talents. It begins with Peter, a devoted man of faith, as he is called to the mission of a lifetime, one that takes him galaxies away from his wife, Bea. Peter becomes immersed in the mysteries of an astonishing new environment, overseen by an enigmatic corporation known only as USIC. His work introduces him to a seemingly friendly native population struggling with a dangerous illness and hungry for Peters teachingshis Bible is their book of strange new things. But Peter is rattled when Beas letters from home become increasingly desperate: typhoons and earthquakes are devastating whole countries, and governments are crumbling. Beas faith, once the guiding light of their lives, begins to falter. Suddenly, a separation measured by an otherworldly distance, and defined both by one newly discovered world and another in a state of collapse, is threatened by an ever-widening gulf that is much less quantifiable. While Peter is reconciling the needs of his congregation with the desires of his strange employer, Bea is struggling for survival. Their trials lay bare a profound meditation on faith, love tested beyond endurance, and our responsibility to those closest to us. Marked by the same bravura storytelling and precise language that made The Crimson Petal and the White such an international success, The Book of Strange New Things is extraordinary, mesmerizing, and replete with emotional complexity and genuine pathos. From the Hardcover edition.

In a maybe-not-so-distant #future we might end up in a situation like Peter - he is going as a missionary to a new planet to preach the word of the bible. At Earth he leaves his wife Bea, and slowly, and from a universe away, Peter learns how life on Earth has been changing in drastic ways. Will there even be a home for him to return to?

Also, this cover is so shiny, I can‘t even 😍

From one Michel Faber book to another - just look at that shine ✨✨

Peter travels to a new planet as a missionairy, leaving his wife, Bea, at home. Communication is hard with no #TelephoneWire going through space, so it takes Peter quite some time to learn, that not all is well on Earth.

Faber‘s writing is stunning, but this book left me wanting something more.

In this novel, Peter travels through space to evangelize aliens. Faber does two things incredibly well in this book. He conveys the difficulties of both long-distance relationships and cross-cultural missionary work. This novel gets pretty bleak, but is deeply moving.

This genre defying book certainly makes for a thought-provoking, interesting read. Missionary Peter Leigh leaves his wife on Earth & travels to a distant planet to preach to the native population. As Peter revels in his calling & the work he is doing, his wife gets increasingly desperate—revealed in the letters she writes him—as environmental & political upheavals wreck havoc on Earth. Much to think about—faith, love, responsibility, self.

One of a couple Goodreads Deals worth noting today. I bought this audiobook a couple years ago and listened to it twice with in a fairly short amount of time, a year maybe, because it was so baffling to me. Across the board its reviews are "good but not great", at best. Have any of your read it? It was such a peculiar read, it stayed with me for quite some time.

A pastor embarks on a mission to bring the word of God to the natives of a recently discovered planet. This takes him away from his wife and the world he's always known. At first, everything seems to be working out for him. But, of course, things soon start to go downhill and he finds himself struggling with his new parishioners, his co-workers, his wife, and his faith. Interesting, though a bit preachy at times.

AmyG I agree. Someone had told me it was amazing. So I kept reading and when I was done I though...huh? 2y

It was well-written and highly imaginative story. I loved how religion and science interacted in book. I love Grainger's character and i also love Jesus Lover Five. That being said, I did not get the story at all. I understood it but it was a bit anti-climactic. I did not understand the point of it, nothing remotely exciting happened even when Peter was living with the Oasans nothing exciting or interesting happened.

In this book, Peter can only watch #astheworldfallsdown. And he is watching from very, very far away. The only sense he has of how bad life on Earth is getting, is the letters he receives from his wife Bea.

Unfortunately, the disasters described in Bea's letters feel more and more like something that might happen in real life too.

I really wanted to love this book. It started out so well, I were intriqued and excited. But then somewhere around the middle, it lost me a bit. It became a bit too religious, and it didn't feel like the sweeping, space-defying love story anymore. I were more interested in reading about what went on on Earth, and I think the addition of Bea's pov could have worked really well.

Sadly, this didn't live up to my #5startbrprediction

This is the first book I thought of for #agalaxyfarfaraway. A preacher goes to a planet in another galaxy to introduce the locals to Christianity. He brings his Bible with him and the locals call it "The Book of Strange New Things". After a time, though, it's not clear whether the preacher is having as much an impact on the locals as they are having on him. Meanwhile, Earth is falling apart and there may be no place to go back to. #maybookflowers

Bookworm54 There are a couple I have enjoyed that you might want to take a look at :) Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a weird and wonderful series of books. They are easy to dip in and out of as the story is bizarre regardless! My personal favourite of those books is The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. 😊 3y
Bookworm54 There are a couple of others I would recommend. Inside Out by Maria V Snyder (followed by Outside In) is a dystopian duology set on a gigantic spaceship. Young adult and with the typical tropes, but still a great read! Then there is the Halo series starting with The Fall of Reach by Eric Nyland. And a prequel to the first transformers film, mainly focusing on an earth military crew, both on an earth mission, and manning a ship in space 💕 3y
