This was…odd but fascinating. It follows the planet Sask-E‘s development over three “generations” (lifespans have been greatly increased, so each generation spans hundreds of years). I loved the world-building: there are persons from a number of different species (moose! cats! naked mole rats! bots! a cyborg cow!), powerful corporations gunning for profit, a utopian underground society…and that‘s just scratching the surface. (Cont‘d) ⬇️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) The ending of each section felt abrupt, though—cutting off before there is any real resolution of the major events that have just occurred. When the next part picks up, we see the outworking of those events in the next generation. It was well-constructed, but also frustrating—I got attached to each set of characters, and wanted to read how things worked out for them, rather than having to piece together clues from the next section. ⬇️ 2w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) My other frustration is that the tone is all over the place. There‘s the lighthearted nature of a world with naked mole rats who wear jackets and cats who don‘t understand why humans get aroused by a strip show, and then we get into the corporate greed and corruption, and there are some very dark scenes indeed. Newitz explores conservation, infrastructure, personhood, exploitation, classism…there‘s a lot here. ⬇️ 2w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) In some ways this is all over the map. I kind of wish each section had been fleshed out into a novella or full novel, expanding this into a trilogy. That said, it was a fascinating read and I‘m interested to read more by Newitz. 2w

#IDLR #InDeathLongReadalong I really enjoyed this contribution to the series. What‘s interesting is I read that this series was originally meant to be a trilogy. It would have ended with the wedding! Instead we‘re up to…what, book 65 or something?? I can‘t wait to see what further growth the characters have and who else joins this crazy cast of characters. A few points to discuss are in the comments:

StayCurious Summerset has a layered and tragic past. Do we think his dislike of Eve stems from the fact that she‘s a cop or from the fact that he could lose a part of Roarke to her? 3w
StayCurious Eve has a select number of friends that are like family to her. We see how protective she became of Mavis. Do you think if she had to she would have skirted the law and hidden Mavis away using Roarke‘s power? Or would she have stuck by her badge to the end? 3w
StayCurious Peabody was sorely used in this book by the killer. How do you think she‘ll handle that so early in her career? 3w

StayCurious Immortality and youth is something that so many people crave, even, it seems, in this futuristic world. Do you think humans should have a finite time on earth? Would you take the drug immortality if you were offered its benefits? 3w
ShananigansReads @StayCurious I think she would have stuck by the badge. In a way she is the badge and Roarke is helping her figure out she is more than that. But I also think not being able to save Mavis would have broken her in a new and terrible way. 3w
MrsV I think Summerset‘s dislike is because Eve is a cop, but with him knowing her past, I think he‘ll soften a bit towards her. Eve, I feel would have begrudgingly stuck by the badge with Mavis, and I agree it would have gutted her to do so. (edited) 3w
Librarybelle I would not take Immortality…it seems the risks outweigh the benefits, if benefits is the right word. I‘d like to think Summerset will thaw over the series. He did have that moment when Eve remembered. As to Mavis, whatever decision Eve would have to make to protect Mavis if she had to skirt the law would be detrimental to Eve. I am so loving this series!! 3w
willaful !t's so wild that it was supposed to be just three. Though TBH, I think it's gone on way too long!

Summerset shows he has a good heart here. I suspect their relationship will stay pretty much the same but with less real heat under it.

I don't know what Eve would've done. She's shown a willingness to bypass the rules in favor of justice, and letting Mavis take the fall would certainly not be justice. But it would break her either way.
3w
ShananigansReads @StayCurious I‘d pass on immortality. 3w
willaful I do believe in a finite time on earth, but then of course I have no choice. Maybe I would feel differently if I did. Certainly I am loathing getting old and facing mortality. 🤬

Poor Peabody. I suspect it will toughen her up but I hope Eve keeps her from feeling like a bad cop. I think she knew all along that he wasn't super interested in her and she wasn't that invested, so that should help.
3w
StayCurious @willaful I suppose we‘ll see if she keeps covering the same ground or if she keeps it fresh. She has said she‘s not ready to say goodbye to the characters yet - and I guess her publishers bow to her wishes. She is Nora after all haha (edited) 3w
LiseWorks I don't think Eve would have broken the law to save Mavis, but she would keep trying to help her. I think Summersett has a thing against all cops that is why he distrust her. And that has to do with his daughter. Roarke found who killed her and dealt with it. I am glad Roberts kept writing this series. I am not for immortality. 3w
TheAromaofBooks That's really interesting about this originally being a trilogy. I can see that now that you say it, because a lot of threads did feel like they got tidied up. I'm interested to see where these characters go next!! I really loved Peabody in this book and felt so bad for her. Casto felt smarmy to me from the beginning because of the way he was flirting with both women. 😑 3w

Another superb entry in the In Death series! Eve confronts parts of her past and has to prove her bff‘s innocence. I laughed out loud in a couple of parts, and I‘m enjoying how much Eve and even Roarke have grown so far. Cannot wait to see what is in store for them next. #InDeathLongReadalong

Librarybelle This is my #BookSpin title for this month‘s #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks 3w
LiseWorks I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Yes I also laughed out loud at some parts too. 3w

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR: Mavis gets fired, poor thing and Eve‘s house is taken over by fashionable characters for a night as they target her hair and wardrobe before the wedding.

Eve has a terrible nightmare/memory and finally relives what happened on that final fateful night.

Peabody gets closer to Casto, even though he has shown a bit of flirty interest in Eve.
Eve finds her unknown - the immortal flower -deadly, beautiful and illegal⬇️

StayCurious They nail down Redford - he was planning to make the immortal drug and owned a specimen of the flower. But did he kill Pandora over a deal gone sour? 4w
ShananigansReads I think Mavis will be okay, but I cannot imagine the nonsense going on at Roarke's house. They must be driving Summerset crazy. Eve's recovered memories caught me off guard for some reason. I'm glad she did what she did, that bastard deserved worse. I do not trust Casto, but I never trust new characters.

Librarybelle I‘m glad Eve recovered her memory…she can now begin the slow process of healing. How horrifying what she lived through as a child! Overall, I am anxious to finish. Another great addition to the series. 4w
LiseWorks We are starting to see a little of Peabody 's Character. It is sad that Mavis lost her job. Just goes to show how the employer thought of her. 4w
MrsV I figured that was going to be the way in regards to Eve‘s past. If she wasn‘t the one, Roarke definitely would. I‘m also glad it brought a little bit more understanding with Somerset, maybe that stick won‘t be so far up his butt now with her. 4w
TheAromaofBooks I'm really enjoying this one. Like ShananigansReads I'm not sure if I trust Casto, mainly because he seems to be flirting shamelessly with both Eve and Peabody so 😑 A lot of emotions in this week's chapters, but it feels like maybe Eve can finally start to move forward. I loved how supportive everyone was for her. Side note, I think five chapters a week is a great pace for this buddy read!! 4w
