The Great Gatsby | F Scott Fitzgerald
post image

Gatsby spends many #summernights throwing lavish parties for hangers on, frequently stepping away to answer the #telephonewire (usually business from Chicago), hoping that Daisy will walk in, so they can rekindle their romance and finally be together #forgood.

And now I'm all caught up 🙂

vivastory Very clever! I need to reread this. I felt a bit meh when I read this, but have since read & loved several Fitzgerald stories. 5y
Cinfhen Fantastic 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 5y
Cathythoughts Nice one 👍🏻♥️ 5y
readordierachel @vivastory It's the only Fitzgerald I've ever read. Definitely need to correct that. I used to be meh about it too, but I liked it much more when I recently reread it. 5y

#MusicalNewYear #TelephoneWire

I drew a complete blank on this prompt yesterday, but this book popped into my head just now. First published in 1948, forgotten for years and republished in 2014, it is a cracking mystery and a fascinating portrait of post war Melbourne. Yet another one of my books I can't find. I desperately need more shelving!

Cinfhen Yay for memory 🤓 5y
Freespirit I like the sound of this one 👍🏼 5y
vivastory This sounds wonderful! 5y

Before the telephone ☎️ people had to wire or write their love letters ✉️!

Cinfhen Ha!! Truth!!! I remember the excitement of getting a letter from a boy. Having to get the mail before ANY family member got to it first😂 5y

Station Eleven | Emily St John Mandel
post image

#MusicalNewYear It struck me as I was thinking of #TelephoneWire that my kids have probably no idea what that really was, which made me think of one of my favorite books, Station Eleven. Set in the future there‘s a scene where items from the past are sort of memorialized in a “museum”. What item would you want to preserve as a relic of your past???? My first thought was my Walkman 🎧

vivastory It'd be a tie between a Walkman & a VCR. 5y
Cinfhen Oh yeah!!! The VCR! @vivastory good one 5y
TrishB I still have my first Walkman somewhere and we still have VCR in the shed 😁😁 5y

Deblovestoread This is really going to date me but my first transistor radio was the best present I got when I was a kid. 5y
Cinfhen It wasn‘t until our big move overseas before we got rid of almost EVERY ITEM we ever owned.... that included all the dozens of broken electronics....we must of had 11 boomboxes in all different sizes and colors!!! @TrishB @Kdgordon88 it‘s funny, but our transistor radio still worked 😂😂 (edited) 5y
Bklover I remember when we got rid of our clunky black phone and got a space saver phone (name on your pic). I thought it was the greatest thing ever until my friend got a pink one for her room. 💕💕💕💕 5y
cathysaid Remember actual Report Cards? And Library cards? I could build a pretty good bio with those two things. 5y
L_auren My portable CD player. My prized position in 1999 😬 a gift from my dad‘s wealthy boss! 5y
squirrelbrain There‘s a fab video doing the rounds at the moment of teenagers trying to use a rotary phone - bless ‘em! https://interestingengineering.com/video/watch-two-teenagers-try-to-dial-a-numbe... @vivastory @Cinfhen @TrishB @Kdgordon88 @Bklover @cathysaid @L_auren (edited) 5y
Cinfhen Wait??? There are no longer library cards???? @cathysaid I remember when report cards went electronic but our library still uses library cards 5y
Cinfhen OMG! That was hilarious @squirrelbrain 5y
Cinfhen See, my kids would say discman too @L_auren because they don‘t remember the Walkman 😜and I so remember the colored space saver phone @Bklover that was fancy!!! 5y
TrishB My daughter doesn‘t even remember dial up internet access!! 5y
ShookBelf We were introducing our 14 year old son to the delights of a vinyl record a few weeks ago, and totally blew his mind when we turned the record over to the B-side!!! 5y
AceOnRoam @TrishB 😁😁😁 too funny. 5y
Cinfhen That‘s funny @ShookBelf @TrishB I feel bad for our kids....they missed out on some good times 😜 5y
readordierachel Good one! Love this book ❤ 5y
merelybookish Just the other day, j had a clear memory of rewinding a cassette in the tape deck of a car while driving. That squeal and vibration as I would try to find just the right spot. Made me sad. 5y
Cinfhen I really loved this novel @readordierachel do u have any suggestions for similar books?? 5y
Cinfhen I remember that skill set too @merelybookish It was so cool when the remote control feature was introduced. It could take u right to the song!!!! 5y
readordierachel @Cinfhen Hmm. Margaret Atwood's MadAddam Trilogy (Oryx and Crake is the first book) has a similar feel. I loved it, too, though in a different way from Station 5y
Reviewsbylola This reminds me of a hilarious video I saw recently. https://youtu.be/1OADXNGnJok 5y
Cinfhen Thanks for the recommendation @readordierachel and THAT video is hilarious @Reviewsbylola I can‘t believe that wasn‘t staged 5y
CSeydel @Reviewsbylola that was awesome. I convulsed with laughter every time they made a mistake and would pick up the receiver and put it down. I‘m watching with my 15 year old and she said “why are you laughing? Isn‘t that how to restart it?” So I‘m thinking ... it‘s not staged (edited) 5y
Reviewsbylola @CSeydel I could totally see my 19 year old stepdaughter doing the same thing. My 6 year old asked me the other day how my mom texted people when I was a kid if there were no cell phones. 😂😂🤣 5y

Ill Will: A Novel | Dan Chaon
post image

Although we are firmly entrenched in the digital age, the incorporation of the technology in fiction is still novel &, when executed correctly, exciting. Such as the text messages in Ill Will & Joe Hill's Loaded. It is also fascinating to read an older procedural where the pacing is different, due to the investigator having to hoof it to the nearest phone booth.

Dial "M" for Murder | Frederick Knott
post image

Growing up, one of the mainstays of any mystery or thriller, was when the victim discovered the #telephonewire had been cut. The same scene over and over: they'd pick up the receiver, start stabbing the button trying to get a dial tone, and say repeatedly Hello? Hello? Hello?!
You knew they were in trouble then. 😀
What's the equivalent now? An unwanted text? No service?
#musicalnewyear @Cinfhen @vivastory

vivastory ??...or "We've traced the call, it's coming from inside your house" ?? 5y
merelybookish @vivastory Oh yeah! That was the whole next level! 😀 5y

I could be wrong here, because I read this book years ago when it was first published so my memory is fuzzy, but I seem to remember that one of the most vivid parts of RoC for me was Katey Kontent‘s job as a switchboard operator. For some reason, the image was just so intriguing and vivid to me. All these women just lined up in a room taking phone calls.

#telephonewire #musicalnewyear

Leftcoastzen My mom knew how to do that! 5y
JackOBotts I‘ve been watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Midge is working as a phone/switch board operator for a department store. Chaotic and never a quiet moment. 5y
vivastory I can't imagine. Too stressful!! 5y

Cinfhen Why don‘t I remember that🧐all I remember is that the guy was a photographer ( and I‘m even a little shaky about that) 😝 5y
Cinfhen Great graphics!!!! 5y
Beatlefan129 My grandma worked as a switchboard operator. It always makes me think of “One ringy dingy, two ringy dingy” 😋 5y
Reviewsbylola Like I said, I could be misremembering. 😂😂 @Cinfhen 5y
Cinfhen No, you‘re probably right!!! My memory is bad!!!! 5y

Andrew65 @vivastory Love the humour in them. 5y
Booknerd2 Agree totally!!! 💜💜💜 Wyn!!! Wish he was my friend. Everyone needs a rich, possible sociopathic friend. 😜 I‘ve read them all wish he would write another in the series. 5y
Andrew65 @Booknerd2 Possible sociopath?!?! Not sure I agree with possible. 😂 I‘m waiting impatiently for a new one. 5y
