Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders, Book 1)
Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders, Book 1) | Robin Hobb
As addictive as morphine THE TIMES From the author of the classic Farseer trilogy, Ship of Magic begins an epic tale of pirates, sentient ships, magic, sea serpents, slave revolts, dashing heroes and bloody battles. On the northernmost point of the Cursed Shores lies Bingtown, a bustling hub of exotic trade and home to a proud merchant nobility famed for its extraordinary vessels. Only Bingtown liveships can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain Wild River and plunder the riches found upstream, but such vessels are made from the most precious commodity in the world a material with the ability to become sentient and so are extremely rare. The fortunes of one of Bingtowns oldest families rest on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. For Althea Vestrit, the ship is her rightful legacy. But the fate of Vivacia and the Vestrits may ultimately lie in the hands of the dark and charming pirate, Kennit, who lusts after such a ship and has plans of his own . . .

After not reading this book for months because I found out I'm not the biggest "ship book" fan, I did find myself very amused by the personality of the pirate and the personality of the "monk" in the beginning. I hope the book stays entertaining!

Good fantasy world and character development. Moves at a good pace and I wasn't bored with any part. It didn't have me reluctant to put it down and deal with reality like some books I've read, but I did enjoy it and look forward to reading the next two.

I loved this & it also drove. me. crazy. I loved the characters & things just kept getting worse for them, and I spent a lot of the book plotting ways to get rid of Kyle. Or have someone take him down a peg. Or just punch him in the face. It took me so long to read it because I‘d get so mad at what was happening that I‘d have to take a break! Fantastic world-building, compelling characters, & a satisfying ending—I need to read the next book ASAP!

AlaMich Kyle is the absolute Worst!! 5mo

While I love all the books in Robin Hobb‘s Realm of the Elderlings, I love The Liveship Traders Trilogy just a teeny tiny bit more than all the rest. A fantasy series for adults with strong female characters, pirates, and talking ships - what‘s not to love! #24in48 #Hour30Challenge

Laughterhp I‘ve been interested in reading Robin Hobb, but I‘ve never read anything and have no idea where to start! 😬😬 She has so many different book series. What would you recommend? 8mo

The Farseer trilogy is definitely my favorite Robin Hobb and it is no contest but I've been working my way through this chunkster for a bit. Interesting characters and it felt like several different worlds within this one. Now that I'm done with this one, I'm wondering about many of the characters, so I will definitely finish the series.

I'm over halfway in Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb and I really like it. I'm slightly disappointed, but that's because of my sky-high expectations, the somber turns that the plot keeps taking, and the vague serpent talk. Everything else is all good and I can't wait to read the rest.

Mitch Oh that trilogy just gets better and better and better! Enjoy 11mo
Roos @Mitch Oh thank you! I can't wait, really. I think it's also the fact that English isn't my first language that's bothering me just a tiny little bit. All of the ship stuff I wouldn't understand in Dutch, let alone in English! But I am loving the characters so much! 11mo

I didn‘t love this book as much as I hoped. It‘s not bad, the premise & world building are, in fact, really fantastic but...BUT, the characters are uneven at best & as more than one reviewer has noted, Hobb can be wordy (I skimmed in places). The concept of liveships & their connections to certain families is an intriguing one & I would‘ve liked to see more focus on them & the magic system than on people behaving badly. Just ok for me.

I can sometime finish a book, admire it /like it/ recommend it - but have missed the joy of reading it. In comes Robin Hobb! This is so well written, the language subtle & the character drawing & development swift and engaging. It‘s an engrossing span of a story, that held my attention well. I felt I was a side character, waiting in the wings, observing the play. It was a joy to read and reminded me that books are exciting places to live within.
