Mama Day
Mama Day | Gloria Naylor
On the island of Willow Springs, off the Georgia coast, the powers of healer Mama Day are tested by her great niece, Cocoa, a stubbornly emancipated woman endangered by the island's darker forces. A powerful generational saga at once tender and suspenseful, overflowing with magic and common sense.

“I was never in that camp of a night out with someone is better than a night alone. I was someone, and there was always something to do with me.” - Gloria Naylor, Mama Day

When Cocoa said the above line, I was like, YESSS!! She‘s strong, independent, refuses to settle for less, all while keeping an eye out for a man who respects her and accepts her as-is.

12:30am, reading in the library with a cup tea and a bowl of fruit. It was a crazy day today — got my new desk delivered, had people here helping to set it up and clear out the room it went into. Treated our friends to a pizza dinner to thank them. But I‘m doing okay...thanks to my insomnia, I‘m now up to hour 12 for the #readathon. We have a busy day tomorrow with book club in NYC and family dinner in NJ, but I‘ll keep at it! #24in48 #24B4Monday

#LitsyWalkers: What weird weather we‘re having! Today got to a little over 50, and we had crazy fog as the ice was melting in the unexpected heat. I wanted to walk to the train tracks, which are in the distance there, but I started to get nervous that some idiot was going to run me over in the fog, so I made my walk a short one. It was hard to breathe in all that humidity anyway. But it sure did look cool! #audiowalk

Kaye Spooky looking picture ! Good thing you got home safely ! These walks in all this weather are toughening us up for the easier walks on those pretty spring days we have ahead. 6mo
Cathythoughts Looks amazing 👍🏻 6mo
Vexingcircumstance 50 is really cold where I live. If it gets below 40 here everyone complains a lot if they have to leave their houses. When there is snow or ice everyone panics and everything closes. Lol. 6mo

BookBabe @kaye Indeed! • @Cathythoughts ☺️ @Vexingcircumstance Wow, where do you live? I‘m in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, and the craziest thing about this weather is it was literally zero degrees less than 48 hours ago! 😳 6mo
julesG Weird weather. Your picture looks spooky, I'm glad you played safe. 6mo

DarcysMom That is some spooky fog! 6mo
Vexingcircumstance @BookBabe I live in Wilmington North Carolina. It‘s on the coast. Its actually 52 today, which is cold to me. I wore a sweater. Lol. It‘s been in the 60s the last few days, though and it was in the 70s or warmer through most of December. February is usually our coldest month, though. If we get snow or ice that‘s when we get it. Then in March it starts warming up again. It‘s usually at least in the 80s most days by April. 6mo
Vexingcircumstance We had a couple weeks of weather in the 30s and 40s this month and I was freezing. I don‘t even own many clothes for temperatures that low because we just don‘t get that cold of weather for very long. 6mo

#LitsyWalkers Day 5: Another cold, busy day; hence a very short walk. It was about 29F at the time. 35 is really the lowest I can stand. It‘s snowing now. Meanwhile, I found yet another brook. Some of the best books we‘ve ever read have been set in the American South - and they‘re often overlooked. Which is why we included it as a category in the #ReadingWomenChallenge. One of our favorites is Gloria Naylor's MAMA DAY. Based off of THE TEMPEST, this novel is a family saga set on the Georgia coast and filled with all sorts of mysteries. Head over to our GoodReads group for more recs.

It seems like God reached way down into his box of paints, found the purest reds, the deepest purples, and a dab of midnight blue, then just kinda trailed his fingers along the curve of the horizon and let 'em all bleed down. And when them streaks of color hit the hush-a-by green of the marsh grass with the blue of The Sound behind 'em, you ain't never had to set foot in a church to know you looking at a living prayer.
