I was pretty disappointed in this book, I love the Netflix series, it‘s a warm and cozy show, this book did not have the same kind of feel.

nichollinlove That's disappointing to hear 😕 This has been on my TBR because of the show. It has the Gilmore Girls/Parenthood vibe. I was excited for the books because I assumed they emanated that. 2y
NAM99 @nichollinlove Turns out, pour it out is not part of the first book at least 2y

I‘m a fan of all Sara Shepard books. What I especially liked about this one is that it was adults and college students so you are getting the perspective of people at different stages of life.

I just couldn‘t get into this book, the pacing felt off it was quirky but not in a way that I found enjoyable. I kept hoping things would come together for me but ultimately it wasn‘t the right book.

I found the cosplay descriptions and the con experience a lot of fun but overall, I found Raffy to be a frustrating narrator with the end wrapped up a little too perfectly. I also would‘ve liked Luca‘s point of view

The first half of the book felt like it was there to relay a history without much connection besides panning the fan boys. I found I enjoyed the book once I reached a point where I was familiar with some of the Batman stories. The best part was Glen‘s voices, which can only be enjoyed as the audiobook

Such a powerful book about the kids that are just trying to make it when everything is against them. As good as the book is, the author note at the end is even better and needs to be read. For anyone who needs to hear it today- I have faith in you.

For those who follow me, you may have noticed I‘ve been reading a lot of books related to civil rights and prison reform. This is the first one I‘ve read about DC, where I live. It was very interesting to learn about DC history, where the Black community was and where it is now.

Watching Jeopardy was part of my childhood and I had the pleasure of seeing the taping of the show at the studios in LA and when it came to DC. Alex Trebek has always been a bit of an enigma to me and I always found it interesting that you couldn‘t really tell how he felt about contestants. This book not only talked about his life but also explained how he approached the show and the contestants, which I really enjoyed

So many emotions around the stories in this book. I regularly wished they were fake or embellished because they are all so tragic. Poverty to homelessness is a terrible cycle and these people live it everyday.

I felt the book had good information that definitely made me reconsider how I think about issues around race, however, I didn‘t feel that it was written in a digestible way. I know that audio vs reading this book could have made a difference in my experience but even so, constantly referring to other chapters of the book would have frustrated me in either format.

A friend reminded me recently that history is written by the winners. No where is that more true than the founding of this country. This books goes into the different aspects of class in this country in ways history books never would have and serves as a reminder about treating people as human rather than by class or race.
