Book of Night Women | Marlon James

Just about to launch into this with my AP Lit students. Thinking that the pacing, the language, and the setting will be quite jarring to my students after their immersion in Morrison's A Mercy. I'll be reading along with them, so we'll be exploring the text together. Although excited, I have to admit that I'm a little nervous.

Just a few pics from my books-n-bling themed 40th birthday celebration last night. My birthday is actually in August, but I wanted this venue & decided to wait until their calendar could accommodate me. My party decorator used my own books as glamorous centerpieces & space embellishments. To be surrounded by my own books in this gorgeous, celebratory space was deeply touching to me. #blingybookshop

Last night, I celebrated my 40th birthday (belatedly) in a bookworm-glam affair I called the Blingy Bookshop. The venue where I held the party is particularly awesome because it invites clients to submit names for drinks for their special night. I based these drink names on some of my favorites texts. Can you cite the literary inspirations for these libations? #blingybookshop

A Mercy | Toni Morrison

Pickpick

An impeccable heartbreaker of a read, this narrative stands among Morrison's best later works. It employs her signature technique of flashback to great effect and draws searingly eye-opening revelations of each of an original and fascinating clutch of diverse characters in pre-US North America of the 1600's.
