The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires: A Novel | Grady Hendrix
Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend. Patricia Campbell had always planned for a big life, but after giving up her career as a nurse to marry an ambitious doctor and become a mother, Patricia's life has never felt smaller. The days are long, her kids are ungrateful, her husband is distant, and her to-do list is never really done. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a group of Charleston mothers united only by their love for true-crime and suspenseful fiction. In these meetings, they're more likely to discuss the FBI's recent siege of Waco as much as the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood. But when an artistic and sensitive stranger moves into the neighborhood, the book club's meetings turn into speculation about the newcomer. Patricia is initially attracted to him, but when some local children go missing, she starts to suspect the newcomer is involved. She begins her own investigation, assuming that he's a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy. What she uncovers is far more terrifying, and soon she--and her book club--are the only people standing between the monster they've invited into their homes and their unsuspecting community.

There are a couple decades in between my two most recent favorite albums, and they are not remotely similar except both were clearly labors of love. I also enjoy albums where every song doesn't sound the same - there's a lot of variety in both of these.
Thanks for starting this @TieDyeDude - I'm always curious what people are listening to 🎶

merelybookish I am clearly not her demographic but I love Olivia Rodrigo. My daughter and I listen to this album a lot. 2mo
Billypar @merelybookish Yeah, I'm also a bit far from her demographic I'd say 😅 But I guess that speaks to how good of an album it is. The songs have been playing on repeat in my head for awhile. 2mo
KathyWheeler I love that Arrested Development album. I haven‘t listened to Olivia Rodrigo. 2mo

BarbaraBB I don‘t know Olivia Rodrigo but coming from you I trust that I‘ll love it. Like I love Arrested Development 🩶 2mo
TieDyeDude Thanks for playing. @WildAlaskaBibliophile is a fan of Arrested Development. I haven't listened to much Olivia Rodrigo (her SNL performances didn't do much for me), but I might try her album. 2mo
Chrissyreadit I loved Arrested Development- and i should listen to Olivia Rodrigo and see what I think. 2mo
Billypar @KathyWheeler @BarbaraBB @Chrissyreadit I missed out on Arrested Development when they were popular but when I got to Tennessee I had one of those 'Ohhh... this song is them?!' moments. 2mo
Billypar @TieDyeDude I didn't see her SNL or Grammy's performances, but it wouldn't shock me if the studio versions are better. Vampire seems to me like a song you probably can't help overdoing live (and at karaoke for sure). 2mo
AmyG I just love her song Bad Idea, Right? She is awesome. (edited) 2mo
TheKidUpstairs Arrested Development is one of those bands that I totally forget just how great they are, and then have so much fun being reminded. What a great album. I only learned recently that Dionne Farris featured on People Everyday! 2mo
TheKidUpstairs And I join you in the Olivia Rodrigo love, her music is perfect for blasting in the car and singing at the top of your lungs! 2mo
Billypar @AmyG Yeah, that's the song that's in my head the most - very addictive! 2mo
Billypar @TheKidUpstairs I don't know Dionne Farris - I'll have to give her a try. I do confess to singing Olivia Rodrigo in my car (I should probably probably not 😅). 2mo
Billypar @TheKidUpstairs Ohhhhh - I love this song! I never knew who did it. Same thing as with Tennessee, actually. 2mo

I ended my Goodreads Challenge with a book about vampires. The story is not what I expected. I guess I was a bit disappointed by that. It satisfied the criteria for a horror novel but I hated the husband more than I disliked the antagonist. Over all, the story was okay. I really liked the ending though. #thesouthernbookclubsguidetoslayingvampires #gradyhendrix

I like this character for now. I have a feeling that my opinion on him may change, but he also sounds kind of cute if he turns out to be some type of vampire, that would be hilarious.

So I enjoyed this and found the phrasing different making it a good read. It‘s not a typical vampire book and I really liked that aspect. It has that stepford wives perspective with a vampire in the mix… interesting and enjoyable… Although I would have enjoyed it more with some strong female attitude as it was more go along with the flow rather than take charge of the situation still enjoyable.

Reggie Oh man, I wanted to punch the husbands in here. Especially when he was like-apologize to him. 5mo

Well, this was interesting. I didn‘t really relate to the characters, but enjoyed the story. I know this was set in the 90‘s, but the way the women were treated seemed more 60‘s to me. Very gory, which I find oddly fascinating. Will probably read more of Grady Hendrix.

TLuvs I was "entertained" with this title up until around the half way point. The last few chapters have so throughly disgusted me with the extreme male chauvinistic behaviors, gas lighting/mental abuse, invalidating of the wives, condescending tones, and physical abuse. I had to step away and breathe for a little. I seriously don't know if I'll finish. Nor if I'll read anything from GH again. 7mo
TLuvs Don't have much good to say but a definite case of not the author for this reader. 7mo

I couldn't relate to characters and I hated how husbands treated their wives. I think my problem with this book was that this was concentrating on housewives' every day problems and fights and not on vampires. This wasn't a horror story for my taste.

I loved the writing style though!

This was an entertaining quick read. The pacing was perfect for this story. When a newcomer starts causing problems, the women of the book club must come together and overcome their traditional roles and expectations to put a stop to it. Very suspenseful and certainly gory in some spots.

I would love to be part of a book club that picks monthly themes, rather than a specific book. I think it would be so interesting to chat about a broad theme within the framework of a bunch of books that handle that theme differently. Plus, its a great way to hear about more books! I don't have the social energy to start a book club, but if this exists and u know of it, please let me know 😅

BookmarkTavern What kind of themes? This sounds like a really cool idea? 12mo
ShyBookOwl @ozma.of.oz I'm thinking more specific than a genre, but stuff u can know from the back cover and is broad enough to play out many ways. Like, set in a hidden/secret place, or deals with the loss of a parent, or takes place across 2 timelines or on 2 continents. I'm spit-balling, but that's where my head is at 12mo
Soubhiville I have a bookclub like that. We mostly meet virtually, US central time zone. April we will be in person, but our May topic is “it‘s the end of the world as we know it.” Meeting on May 20th. If you‘re interested email me, magicbelly@gmail, we‘d love to have you attend a meeting and see if you‘d like to join us 🙂. 12mo

ShyBookOwl @ozma.of.oz Some of that is maybe too broad, but I think the idea would be to explore and learn about multiple books with one thing in common, through spoiler-free chats. That way, ppl can find more books in their wheelhouse or even expand their wheelhouse by encountering a theme they wouldn't normally gravitate towards 12mo
ShyBookOwl @Soubhiville That's awesome! I probably couldn't attend anything in person as I'm in Ontario, Canada BUT super interested in virtual meetings! I'll email u 😊 thank you!! 12mo

Omg this book was gnarly and gory. Bored housewives with shit husbands have a book club. New guy comes to town, rich, hot, but he‘s a vampire and he‘s spotted in the poorer, Black neighborhoods, where kids are going missing or brutally unaliving themselves. This book was quite a surprise & went so many places I didn‘t expect &maybe it didn‘t need to. Not sure how I feel about it, need to think. TW: SA, gore, suicide, systemic racism, sexism etc

This story really grows its characters into becoming strong women and breaking the 'house wife' stigma.

Understanding this book was set back in the 1990's, I'm glad that it showed those stereotypes in a way that demonstrates how terrible and demeaning they are, while still throwing a fun twist on it as these women go outside their comfort zones to protect their families and their community.

It was also a much heavier book than I anticipated, so I‘ll need to find something a bit lighter next!

This will be my second time calling one of Grady Hendrix‘s comic satire of a horror book fun which seems weird but this book was…fun. I love how, like in Horrorstor, Hendrix has put his very otherwise ordinary characters to work fighting evil - not only the storybook evil of vampires but the more insidious evils of racism and misogyny that unfortunately plague our day to day lives.

“I think,” Grace said, and they sat up straighter, “that it shows a remarkable lack of planning on Betty‘s part. If you are going to murder your best friend with an axe, you should make sure you know what you‘re doing.”

Jeansandatshirt I am a mood reader, and I like psychological thrillers. So let me say that the writing is excellent - vivid description, likable characters. So much to love! Also - vivid description! Ugh yucky poo! So I prefer the less graphic in my old age maybe? I‘m not saying I won‘t pick it up in the future! Limited reading time means I‘m pickier about what I read, so moving on - for now! 2y

It‘s not often that I come across a truly funny, horror novel but this one definitely fit the bill.

Patricia Campbell is a typical Southern housewife. She belongs to a book club solely devoted to true crime and murder mysteries. The arrival of the handsome stranger, James Harris, causes the women to piece together a deadly puzzle about deaths in the area. To protect their families, they take care of the problem in a proper-Southern manner.
