This was an impressive debut from Angie Kim. A riveting courtroom drama with authentic characters. The mystery will draw you in but it's the powerful, honest portrayal of parenthood, disability care, and immigration that will make you fall. One of my favorite reads this year!

Raw and compelling view on addiction. Made me start an open dialogue with my kids. Worth the read for every parent!

Mehso-so
Jesstifies I agree about so-so vibes. I really enjoyed the first half, and then struggled with how the plot resolved. Felt like an odd mix of atmospheric old world problems jammed together with a super pro-Google nerd fest :P 3w
MiqueMarie @Jesstifies exactly. Lol 3w
megzlynn I‘m doing the Modern Mrs. Darcy Challenge as well. I have one prompt left. I can‘t wait to finish. It‘s the first challenge I‘ve ever participated in! 3w

Since it‘s almost the last quarter of the year, I figured I should update my challenges on here:
#mmdchallenge - 12/12 ✅
#readingwomenchallenge: 23/26
#ReadHarderChallenge 21/24
#Booked2019 17/24 (I‘ve been sticking to the schedule so all but one I won‘t start til October).
I was wondering if we think Next Year In Havana counts for Historical Romance by AOC for #readharder, because if so, That one is done too!

ReadingMeagan I think Next Year in Havana totally counts as a historical romance! Well done completing so many challenges! 4w
ReadingMeagan Have you read any Louise Penny books? MMD says they are cozy mysteries. And the first one takes place in October. It will be a great read for this time of year 😊 4w
MelissaSue81 @ReadingMeagan - I've not read any Louise Penny. I have one of those Cat Mystery books set aside for that challenge, but perhaps I'll check out Louise Penny too!

ReadingMeagan @MelissaSue81 I‘ve only read the first two. But I REALLY enjoyed them. They really helped put me into a Fall/Winter mood and be okay with the cold weather coming back. Her writing is really lovely. And I‘m excited to have a new series to read! Good luck with whatever you choose! 4w
MicheleinPhilly Would you say The Water Dancer is paranormal? Based on the description it seems it might be and I was considering using it for #booked2019 if so. 4w
MelissaSue81 @MicheleinPhilly - I am literally getting to the paranormal-ish part as we speak. So stay tuned. I'll let you know. 😄 I will say, I'm not an expert on the subtleties of differences between Paranormal, Magical Realism, etc..
4w
MicheleinPhilly Do you know how many times I have re-read the definition of paranormal in the Goodreads group in order to try to figure out what to read??? DOZENS. It‘s so not my genre. 4w
Scochrane26 If you still need to do historical romance by aoc, you could use Alyssa cole‘s An Extraordinary Union. I used it last yr for same prompt. 4w
MelissaSue81 @Scochrane26 - Yeah that seems to be the one everyone uses! It doesn't sound that great to me, but maybe it would be a fast read at least.

4w
Scochrane26 @MelissaSue81 you could try one of her other books. I also like sherry Thomas (lady Sherlock series). I don‘t read many romance, but after reading lady Sherlock, I went back & read a few of hers. 4w
MelissaSue81 @MicheleinPhilly - I am now 38% into it and I wasn't sure at first but now I am going to say absolutely yes! And I too, then, will count it for #booked2019 for the last quarter even though I will finish it this month!

Oh. My. Word.

I will be recommending this book to everyone with a love of the English language. I can't wrap my head around how he wrote this.

Reminded me a bit of Flowers for Algernon. Saying how is a spoiler, but those who have read both will understand.

So glad that Anne Bogel pushed this to the top of my TBR. It may be one of my all-time favorites.

And I think I can finally declare my reading slump over. What a great day! 😁

mcctrish I loved this book. I‘m only sad I didn‘t buy it 1mo
Aseleener Would this be appropriate to read to kids? Mine are 9 & 11. Sounds like something my 11 yr old would enjoy. 1mo
mom2bugnbee @Aseleener Completely appropriate re: subject matter & content. The only caveat is that the vocabulary level is extremely high. I was constantly stopping to look up the definition of a word. The main issue in the plot is that letters keep "disappearing" from the alphabet (spoilers to say more), so as the book progresses, the characters/author have to get much more creative with their word choice, thus using lesser known words. 1mo

Wow.

Until this book, I'd been reading this series strictly for the mystery. And there's plenty of that here. But what I didn't expect was all of the hidden meanings & discussions that could come from this book. Very rarely do I want to re-read a book immediately after finishing it to catch all of the nuances. That's exactly what I want to do now.

A rare ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Technically finished this last night for #SummersEndReadathon, but forgot to post... So totally fine if this post can't be counted, @Clwojick! ☺

I read this book in one day (I'm off work on Fridays), which I rarely have time to do. Taylor Jenkins Reid has become an auto-read author for me now. I loved how Evelyn was so lovable & so hateable at the same time! So good!

Holy crap.

I rarely give five star ratings. This book absolutely lived up to the hype. Mercy. Go read it.

(I'm trying to decide if I want to see it as a series. I trust Reese Witherspoon, but it might mess with the perfect pictures in my head, y'know?)
