Visiting Snæfullsjökull next week, so I started rereading the paperback I've had since 1965. Went to look something up, and found that this was an inferior and abridged translation (left), in which the characters names had been changed, scenes left out, and other atrocities of literature. At long last reading the better translation (right) and enjoying it, which is as good as I'm going to get since my French isn't up to reading the original.

I‘m in western Iceland and my view is Snaesfellsjokull, where you can jump in to the center of the earth, at least according to Jules Verne.
Started reading it today!

This was definitely one of the more adventurous books I‘ve read. This has to be my second favorite Jules Verne novel, next to Around The World In Eighty Days. It had me wanting to read more and more. I couldn‘t put it down, I just had to keep reading it. I had this urge to finish reading it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #AJourneyToTheCenterOfTheEarth #JulesVerne #book #books #epicreads @EpicReads #bookend #bookends #Classics #ScienceFiction #Fiction #Adventure 💗💗

This was my January TBR-buster read. I‘ve put 12 titles from my TBR in a box and I draw one each month. I didn‘t feel like reading it but it‘s not a challenge if you‘re just going to give up. Glad I persisted!! Didn‘t enjoy it very much. Not my genre. But some of it captured my imagination and it‘s one of those “must reads” in my opinion. I have a list of them! Now, back to reading what I like. Until my Feb pick.

This book and a couple of essays are all that's standing between me and the end of the 2018 Read Harder Challenge from @bookriot --eek! Not off to a great start with this book but gotta power through, it's for 2 categories-- a genre novel in translation and an assigned book you hated or never finished.

My little buddy is clearly happy to have me home. Even with his cute furry head in the way, I was able to finish up my first Jules Verne novel. I enjoyed it, but I did expect a little more adventure and less whiney narrator. Ultimately, I still liked the tale (despite a rather anticlimactic ending). Hopefully my next Verne experience aligns more with my expectations. Recommendations are welcome!! #bowie #catsoflitsy #LitsyAtoZ #J #readharder2018

I Just finished Journey To The Center Of The Earth. It evolved a eccentric geological professor, his assistant nephew, and a guide try to descend into a Icelandic volcano to find the center of the earth. It was a fun read overall but dragged a bit in places and had a overall disappointing ending. But if you're a fan of Jules Verne or if you're looking for a classic science fiction store check it out. What's your favorite Joules Verne story? 🤔

Rachel.Rencher Sorry the ending wasn't what you were hoping for, but maybe it's better that it wasn't predictable! 1y
parasolofdoom This one's my favorite but I've only read two! And Five Weeks in a Balloon was really unfortunate in its depiction of Africans 1y
rwmg I can't remember whether what I read was a translation of the originls or whether it was a children's adaptation 11mo

I try to squeeze in some classics that I missed when I was growing up and #SerialReader is a great way to do that. I‘ve been on a little Jules Verne kick after reading Around the World in Eighty Days. While I didn‘t enjoy this one quite as much I did have fun reading about the adventures of Harry, his crazy Uncle Hardwigg and their intrepid Icelandic guide Hans.

I was obsessed with this when I was (not so) young and still spent an embarrassing number of years hoping that the centre of our earth held exactly these mysteries. I can't bring myself to watch the Brendan Fraser movie.

This is one of the original illustrations by Édouard Riou for this classic, first published in French in 1864.

However wrought with tons of scientific jargen, this book is not difficult to follow and instead proves to be quite easy for the reader to follow along. With exciting plot twists at every turn, Verne leaves you constantly wondering if our pros will EVER see daylight again. Simply a classic.
