Summer That Melted Everything
Summer That Melted Everything | Tiffany McDaniel
Fielding Bliss has never forgotten the summer of 1984: the year a heat wave scorched Breathed, Ohio. The year he became friends with the devil.Sal seems to appear out of nowhere - a bruised and tattered thirteen-year-old boy claiming to be the devil himself answering an invitation. Fielding Bliss, the son of a local prosecutor, brings him home where he's welcomed into the Bliss family, assuming he's a runaway from a nearby farm town. When word spreads that the devil has come to Breathed, not everyone is happy to welcome this self-proclaimed fallen angel. Murmurs follow him and tensions rise, along with the temperature as an unbearable heat wave rolls into town right along with him. As strange accidents start to occur, riled by the feverish heat, some in the town start to believe that Sal is exactly who he claims to be. While the Bliss family wrestle with their own personal demons, a fanatic drives the town to the brink of a catastrophe that will change this sleepy Ohio backwater forever.

I do not think I can express on here the joy this gave me. @Gissy tagged every item with a note why she chose it for me. Disney, sloths, HP, coffee…all things I 💜. The candle smells amazing, the snow globe is adorable, the Belle cup and Cinderella measuring cups so cute, the books look great and the most perfect bookmarks. Thank you! Your choices couldn‘t be more perfect. #ListyFoundFamilySwap Thanks for hosting @KateReadsYA

Beautiful book. It‘s still in my heart. Beautifully written. So sad too😢Looking forward to read Betty

I read that month 11 books that month and it was a fantastic reading month. I have to mention also: The Hobbit and Ninth House

And liked Promise Boys, The Haunting of Brynn Wilder and The Secret History

Great month!!! 📚❤️

What a beautiful writing style but so sad😢This story, set in the 80‘s, discussed social topics like, racism, homophobia, AIDS, social stereotypes, mental illness and other topics in a different way. I know the book has mixed reviews but it worked for me😭Beautiful, I want to read moe books by this author. This was her debut novel. 4.5⭐️An oldie book in my tbr.

ncsufoxes Betty (her second book is so good). Her recent release, On the Savage Side, just floored me. I agree, she writes about such horrific things but her writing is so beautiful. 7mo

dabbe Is the setting the hell that is Phoenix in the summer? 🤣🤣🤣 13mo
CBee @dabbe ha! I think Alabama is about the same except we get the extra fresh hell that is humidity 🥵 This one is set in Ohio! 13mo
dabbe @CBee Oh yeah, the humidity. Everyone says Phoenix is a dry heat, and it is ... until monsoon season. Then it's 115 with 70-90% dew point. Is Alabama like 90% and 90% humidity? That would be the worst. I visited Hong Kong years ago in April, and that was the weather. All I did was stay in the hotel and sit in front of the air conditioner. 🤣 13mo

How is this her debut novel?? Her writing is poetic, powerful, incredible. Not an easy book to read, but a worthwhile one. She takes horrible situations and injects light into them somehow. You think you can‘t possibly keep reading for the heartbreak, but you do, because the light is still there ♥️ @AmyG @TrishB this one rocked me!

ncsufoxes I have loved this one & Betty, both difficult subject matter but so good. Her writing is so beautiful. I just ordered her new one. 13mo
CBee @ncsufoxes I loved Betty as well and look forward to the newest one 💚 13mo
TrishB Yes, I read this one in awe of being her debut. I think this one probably contains a bit more humour than the 2 later ones, which helps you deal with the situations. But a brilliant author. 13mo

The Devil has entered the town of Breathed, Ohio in the form of a 13-year-old boy. Or wait...has he? This tale of the events of a 1984 summer is relayed by the now elderly protagonist as if it were a fairy tale, full of ambiguity. At its core, it's a story of a child discovering the world to be less magical than he thought, full of hate and death. Beautiful language and imagery keep it from being depressing.

She takes another tragic tale with difficult subject matter (lots of trigger warnings which I‘ll list out in the comments) but uses such beautiful writing. It was a truly heartbreaking story on so many levels but I couldn‘t stop reading. Definitely a story that will stick with you. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #bookspin #litsylovereads

It seems fitting that a book about the devil would be so absolutely soul-crushing, but the internal injuries one suffers while reading this do not exist to shock. We are scathed into pondering the vivid picture of what lurks in the hearts of human beings. The heartbreak of it all is both startling and familiar, and the narrative demands an emotional interactiveness from the start.

WJCintron Hi, this may not be the right platform, but couldn't find an email. I read your review of this book & other reviews you've posted on Goodreads. I can honestly say I love the way you write your reviews. They are in depth & honest. It would mean a lot if you could take a look at our book. I think you may like it, given our strong message on humanity & mental health. It's character driven & we dig deep into their pain. 2y

@Soubhiville Thank you! I planned to wait until I sent your book to post a photo but I am, as ever, tardy.

We went camping last weekend (first foray back into socializing) & I‘m wiped. Plus, my work‘s planning to ease back into full-services & I‘ve been moderately (read: majorly) obsessed with crafting an impassioned plea for maintaining one WFH (work from home) day per week. Focusing on anything else has been tough. I promise I‘ll mail it soon!

vivastory I love the tagged book & have heard nothing but high praise for her latest. Fingers crossed that the powers that be go with the wfh! 3y
monalyisha @vivastory It‘s one I‘ve been meaning to read forever! As for the WFH, I think it‘s a tough sell...but I really feel gutted about the prospect of returning to the way it was, so I had to say something. And I *love* my job! I just think our American Work Week (plus my commute) is soul-crushing. To have had such freedom for almost a year & a half & to be, now, on the precipice of losing it? Well, suffice it to say that *I* am losing it a little. 3y
Soubhiville Good luck with your job. I hope you‘ll enjoy the books! 3y

emtobiasz Good luck on the wfh ask! I think it‘s totally reasonable. The programming that I‘ve done for the library this year has taken so much more intensive planning time, compared to pre-Covid: I don‘t know how I used to get anything done in the building! I just don‘t have the same level of focus for that kind of brain-work as I do at home. 3y
monalyisha @emtobiasz Thank you! I haven‘t heard from many people in our field so that‘s helpful. Aside from the way I‘m personally feeling, I really do think there‘s a population that‘s served by virtual &/or recorded programming (busy families who can‘t make it to our in-person events; homebound patrons who crave social & intellectual connection; at-risk patrons who can‘t jeopardize their health in public places). I‘m keeping my fingers crossed. ✌🏻 3y
ravenlee FWIW - as a mom (and my kid is 7 now but NEVER slept as a baby), having access to storytime events whenever the kiddo is ready for them is amazing. If you have a kid who‘s nocturnal it can be a real help to have these virtual storytimes in the middle of the night when you‘re drained. We watched a LOT of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and it would have been so great to cut that with some stories from the library. 3y
802Librarian I‘m a library director and I confess that I‘ve really enjoyed having a much more regular and flexible schedule while we‘ve been closed 🤫 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Fingers crossed that your plea for a WFH day doesn't fall on deaf ears. 🤞 3y

Consigliato!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ McDaniel has secured a spot among my must-read authors! A frustrated attorney snarkily invites the devil to town. And to town he comes ... in the form of a 13-year-old boy ostensibly bringing with him the hottest summer in memory. Through subtle magical realism and allegorical characters, McDaniel broaches heavy themes focusing largely on good versus evil. Breathed, Ohio is literally and figuratively melting. A brilliant debut!

britt_brooke @Cinfhen You could go either way on this one, but I hope you‘ll give it a go. 🤞🏻 3y

This book is slow to start. I had a hard time with the anachronism of McDaniel‘s fictional Breathed, Ohio. (Although set in the 1980s/2055, Breathed is more 1940s, and the references to Atari and Nintendo feel a bit belaboured). The pacing is much tighter in the second half, but the ending is dark. Ultimately, a moving, albeit difficult, meditation on good, evil, and love. CN: violence, racial violence, child abuse, racial and homophobic slurs.

It took me a bit to get into this book. I‘m glad I stuck with it, because it ended up being outstanding. It definitely took a turn. At first I thought it would be lighthearted and humorous, yet it ended up being a 180 from that. The people in this book carry heavy burdens, and I really felt for their tragedies. This book makes the reader question good/evil and examine how quick we are to judge. There are heavy consequences for the choices made.

@parttimedomestic hey Valerie I figured out what that word was that you were asking about in this book. If you recall when he introduces the devil to his brother grand grand says a greeting to him and calls him something in a language that's not very easy to understand. I did some research and this is what I found. It is actually the word "devil" written in Russian.

parttimedomestic Thanks for looking it up! I think this was the first time Grand randomly spoke Russian & it really threw me off, it was easier to understand from context as it went on. 6y
BeansPage @parttimedomestic no problem sweetie I like a good puzzle 6y

I can‘t decide how I feel about this book. I enjoy the setting, premise, and characters. But, something feels off about it. Maybe the poetic language feels a little forced, causing characters to say things that don‘t ring true, taking me out of the story. Or, maybe it‘s that that lessons are being taught, but it feels a little preachy? I‘m 3/4 of the way through, so I haven‘t decided yet.

The ending of this book made me so mad I got distracted and burned the dang burrito I was heating up for dinner! While I do think this book is written beautifully (if a little heavy handed on the metaphors and flowery prose) I had a lot of problems with it. I‘ll keep it at that so as not to spoil it for my #LMPBC #groupo partners!

emilyhaldi This book was a struggle for me to get into, but ultimately I ended up totally loving it ❤️so bizarre but for whatever reason it just worked for me!! I can easily see why a lot of people wouldn't like it though.. 6y
parttimedomestic @emilyhaldi the pacing was pretty slow at first, and I‘m definitely in the minority for not liking it! Ultimately the writing style and lack of character development really got to me. 6y

Really not feeling this one... just one big plotless metaphor.

#BookNDessert! The dessert that followed on this tropically hot and humid day was tropical ice cream at a new Peruvian ice cream cafe. I chose Guava. Delicious! Just the cool, refreshing treat we needed to beat the heat. 😋🍦

Tanisha_A Love guava ice-cream too! 😁 6y

#BookNDessert! The dessert that followed on this obtrusively scorching day was at a new Peruvian ice cream cafe. How utterly delightful!!! Accompaniment: tamarind ice cream (the light brown one) and lucuma ice cream (the orange). If you haven't had either, the tamarind tastes something akin to blackberries with a bit of cantaloupe thrown in ( @BookBabe agrees w/ the 1st part); lucuma is too unique (not so fruity) to classify, w/ heavy texture. 🤤

batsy Yum! I love tamarind; the ice-cream must be so refreshing 6y

Vexingcircumstance Crap. Now I want to make the pizza I have in my freezer. It‘s 3am. It is sleep time not pizza time. 6y
Vexingcircumstance I‘m probably making the pizza. I blame you. 6y

Help #groupO ladies! @suvata @prettybooknerd @WriterAtHeart I have it narrowed down to three and I can‘t decide! I‘d appreciate your thoughts. The Summer That Melted Everything is one. The other two are The Story of Arthur Truluv OR The Hearts Invisible Furies

WriterAtHeart Here is my order: 1. Truluv, 2. Summer, 3. Hearts. I am intrigued by all, but this is the order I would pick. 6y
coffeewithbooks That work for me . I am happy with anything 6y
coffeewithbooks I think I am going use . If that work for y‘all 6y
Julie548 @prettybooknerd works for me! And I ended up getting all three books so I‘ll decide when I see them! It was a good excuse to buy books! 😂 6y
coffeewithbooks @Julie548 that a great idea lol . My husband said he buy me another book since I left mine in Michigan. I told him dang if it that easy to get a new book then I will loose 3 lol and get more 😂 6y
