Crossing to Safety | Wallace Stegner
?Introduction by Terry Tempest Williams Afterword by T. H. Watkins ?Called a magnificently crafted story . . . brimming with wisdom by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.

Day 24 of #adventrecommends
This book details the decades-long friendship between two married couples, from the time they meet as young academics in the 1930s to their retirement years. It‘s a quiet book – no mysteries, no scandals, no horrible secrets. It‘s a book about life, about acceptance, about appreciating what you have instead of wasting your life obsessing over what you don't have. It is beautifully written and emotionally resonant.

Tamra I love this book! It‘s long overdue for a reread. 2mo
Amiable @Tamra It‘s my very favorite Stegner. 🥰 2mo

Pairs well with: summer home; anniversary or reunion
Stegner's writing style reveals his age (born in the 30s) and intellect (lots of literary references). This exploration of lifelong friends and their marriages is not a story with a beginning-middle-end, more progression of life ages/stages. There was a sentence or paragraph to read aloud or circle on every page: a description of a picnic or waterfall, a brutally honest conversation about death.

reciprokate "In that fine place, in the ripened Indian summer weather, those two once again choose us. And circumstances where smaller spirits might let envy corrode liking, they declare their generous pleasure in our company and our good luck...We have been invited into their lives, from which we will never be evicted, or evict ourselves." 2y

"I believe that most people have some degree of talent for something - forms, colors, words, sounds. Talent lies around in us like kindling waiting for a match, but some people, just as gifted as others, are less lucky. Fate never drops a match on them. The times are wrong, or their health is poor, or their energy low, or their obligations too many. Something."

reciprokate "Talent, I tell him, believing what I say, is at least half luck. It isn't as if our baby lips were touched with a live coal, and thereafter we lisp in numbers or talk in tongues. We are lucky in our parents, teachers, experience, circumstances, friends, times, physical and mental endowment, or we are not."

Stegner relays through brilliant, simple, and subtle details the dynamic relationship between two very different couples and their life-long friendship. A character study of loyalty, love, fear, envy, and the bonds of friendship. Relationships and friendships change us, teach us about ourselves, and ultimately make us stronger. How does one measure success at the end of one‘s life? Leaves the reader with many questions about life to ponder.

This book was so-so for me. The redeeming quality was the exquisite writing style of Stegner. I didn't connect with the characters like I'd hoped and the ending was a big disappointment for me. Stegner is such an accomplished writer that I'm sure I'll attempt another of his works in the future.

I so much wanted to love this much loved book, but it just didn't do it for me. I know that it made some "ugly cry", but I was not so moved. I was quite moved by some scenes and quite liked Wallace Stegner's writing but the book left something to be desired.

MrsMalaprop I chose it for Book Club a couple of years ago, not having read it before. I liked it and can still recall some scenes from it. It was slow-paced and I wondered if I'd appreciate it more if I read it when I was a bit older. 2y

Frere Jacques and Au Pres de Ma Blonde bring back memories of my high school French teacher. I knew the former song from my dad and learned the latter from my teacher and I can't believe that I remember the words and the music, not having thought of this song in ages. And the funny thing about both songs is that I sing/think them in French. Not translated from English to French. Straight French. It's the oddest sensation. I love it.

tpixie Love french! I miss it! Are used to be able to think and dream in it. But I love the skill slide. 2y
tpixie I'm reading a wrinkle in time and there's a French saying that means 'the more a man knows, the less he talks'. I'm trying to figure out what verb that use for talking because it's not parler. I recall there were verbs used just for written French, so it makes me wonder if this is a special verb. ' Qui plus sait, plus se tait'. The se tait is getting me. Any idea?? 2y
tpixie I finally found it - the verb is se taire- to be quiet 2y
Suelizbeth @tpixie I'm glad you found it! Sorry I didn't see your question until now. I think I need a refresher French course. It sure would be fun to revisit this language. I'm terribly rusty. 2y
