Gathering Blue
Gathering Blue | Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever. As she did in THE GIVER, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, how people could evolve, and what could be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kiras plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future. This ebook includes a sample chapter of MESSENGER.

This was a great story. I absolutely loved The Giver and it was interesting to read about one of the other communities from the first book. I do wish it would have been a continuation of the first book but this one was fantastic on its own. Time for the next one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I had trouble getting into this one because I spent the whole time waiting for it to connect to The Giver! It was an enjoyable story on its own part, though. 2mo
TamTracy @TheAromaofBooks I completely agree! That‘s probably the only reason I didn‘t give it 5 stars. I wanted the story to continue! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I'll be interested to see what you think of the other two books. I honestly found them lacking the tight narrative of the first two books. They do somewhat tie back into The Giver, but the thoughtful themes that make The Giver such a disturbing story are just not there. But lots of people seem to really enjoy them, so maybe I'm just the weird one?? lol 2mo

I love how people's strengths and weaknesses are used differently in this read and how history is remembered, spun, and forgotten. Can not wait to see how these stories come together to see the whole picture.

⭐⭐⭐ I enjoyed this better than The Giver. I'm confused as to why there was no blue in the village though. And why the two books don't seem to connect except for a maybe mention of Jonas that I'm not even sure of. 😒

pppooraikul The next book, Messenger, will connect Gathering Blue and The Giver and I like it best. (The final one has a rather unsatisfying ending IMO.) 6mo
kplovesbooks @pppooraikul Oh good!! I'm glad the next book will tie it together!!!! I'll be reading it soon. 😀 6mo

10/10 Fairly short read, would make for a very interesting longer story. Matt and Branch are my favourite characters in this. Some interesting plant knowledge in this one as well.

Kira's saved after her mother dies, she is told she is no longer welcome due to her disfigurement. Kira feels lucky to have been rescued from a hard life or even death, she is now protected by the guardians and is taken care of much better than she could have imagined. But the longer she stays the more she learns that something is just not quite right. She, Matt & Thomas decide to investigate and figure out what is happening. 4/5 ⭐

Lois Lowry is a powerful but gentle writer. She knows how to carry you away, Iull you, and then surprise you. “Gathering Blue” is officially my favorite book from her. I cherish the image of Kira threading the robe of the Singer, saddening, blooming, and bleeding for art.

I found this today and was like whoa! The Giver has been sitting in my shelf for awhile so this will go next to it since it says it‘s a companion to it!

mdm139 There are 4 in The Giver series. I like book 1 and 2 best. 2y
MelissaSue81 I just noticed that on Libby it said The Giver was #1 in the series, I had never known that. 2y
BookaholicNatty @mdm139 WHAT!!!! 4? Seriously? Oh my heavens! Why have I never noticed this before!!! @MelissaSue81 me neither!!!!! I am shocked that there are 4!!!! 2y

Reviewsbylola I‘ve never read this but I absolutely love The Giver. 2y
theresidentromantic I actually read this one first, as a kid, then it's sequel The Forest which is about a character in this book. And then when I had to read the Giver for school I was totally taken aback! 2y
theresidentromantic As an additional note, love this one more than the Giver, but the next one, 3, will make you cry your eyes out. 2y
Erin7 I LOVED The Giver, but the second one in the series dragged for me. I haven‘t been able to bring myself to continue with #3 and #4. 2y
dragondrool I remember liking this one better than The Giver. Not that I remember much of either. It took me four tries to get through The Giver. 2y

Another great story from Lowry! In 215 pages she builds a world and creates characters that you love and hate. What an amazing book for young readers to dive into and really get them thinking. I can‘t wait to read the next book!

JosieG This is one of my favorite series. I'm working on piecing the quartet together as I can find them used, but I've already read them, and I loved them all. 2y
Ash.on.the.line @JosieG I just found the last one of this series last week and now I‘m working on reading them! So far I love the first two, can‘t wait to finish the last two. 2y

This book was ok. I am reading this series for the first time as an adult. I listened to 'The Giver' last fall and liked it. This book was just ok. I am into 'The Messenger' next which I am hoping I will enjoy more than this book.

I loved 'The Giver' and have always wanted to finish the series (once I learned it was a series). This is #2 of 4 books. I like how this entire world is a mystery...its supposed to be a futuristic world, but it seems like a very out-dated way of life. I couldn't imagine growing up as Kira did.
It feels like they could of put all 4 books together, as they seem too short to read as a stand-alones. On to #3 'Messenger'. Got to find out what happens!

Susanita This was my favorite of the series. 2y

Cortg After finding out this was a series, I didn‘t think I was going to like the other books. Yep, I was wrong. ❤️ 2y
JenFowler @everlocalwest I'm about to start 'Son' now. I wish it all ended well, but now I'm not so hopeful. 2y
everlocalwest It's honestly not even the text of the novel, but the story behind it that moves me most. Lowry wrote it for her deceased done (if I remember correctly he died in combat in Afghanistan). In that way, the novel is a beautiful elegy. I hope you enjoy it as I did! 2y
JenFowler @everlocalwest I did not know that! I'm glad you shared . That adds a whole new dimension. 2y

This book is much like "The Giver", it was an alternate future, or a dystopian society. Much different form Jonas' community but there is much emphasis on "survival of the fittest", strong against the weak. It was a really inspiring and eye-opener book. And like "The Giver" it will definitely leave you begging for more.

I've read more this year than I have in a while which is definitely nice because I have a long to read list to get to. I finished both of these today and though they are wildly different from each other I enjoyed them and wished that both had been longer. I especially enjoyed the world Lowry created in Gathering Blue and would have loved to learn more about it.

Freaking Lois Lowry and her inability to properly end a book. 😡 I enjoyed it very much... but what happens?? How does it all end?? Does Jameson get his due? Does Kira get the life she deserves? Does Mat learn to bathe regularly? So many questions.

I LOVED the Giver, but didn't feel as if this one was as good. Do I need to read the third one to understand the world better?

Purpleness I felt the same way and never got to the third one. 4y
djm001 Sometimes I think I didn't enjoy the sequels as much as The Giver because I read The Giver at such a young age and it made quite the impression on me at that time. I did like returning with the sequels and getting more from that world. 4y
autumnprivett @VeteransWife512 Yes! There's this one, Messenger and Son. 4y
autumnprivett @djm001 Good to know. I've wondered the same thing. Also, I expected it to be a continuation of the original story, so I wonder if that's why I didn't enjoy it as much. 4y
ThatBookishGal You have to read all of them before you get to Son because everything comes together with that book. The three books are individual worlds/communities, and they all come together with the 4th. 4y
wanderlustywriter Agreed, the three sequels were nowhere near as good as The Giver. That being said, I'd still recommend reading them, they're still decent. 4y
Joriebooks Gathering Blue was originally its own book and not a sequel. They were thrown together when she wrote Messenger. I really enjoyed the series 4y
Candidceillie I love gathering blue when you don't take it as a direct sequel to The Giver. Messenger left me really wanting though, sadly 4y
Kathi_Y I agree the Giver was by far the best of the books. 4y
anned2544 I've read The Giver and loved it.. Haven't read the others.. Should I?? 4y

I remember that my parents bought this book for me when I was in elementary school from a scholastic catalogue along with The Giver. Every crack on its spine and crease in its pages is a sign that this has been and still is a well loved book that has shaped me into the person I am and want to be.

Texreader I read it as an adult and found it to be so beautiful. I believe it is the best in this series. 4y
