Oh man, I have been neglecting Litsy terribly. I'm going to try to be better. Got these three signed by Ursula Vernon at the con where I bought them, but haven't cracked them open yet. Too many library books ahead of them! (Kingfisher is her pen name for adult books)

Well damn, that's weird to see on the page. I wasn't raised quite as cultish as this character was, but still very conservative Christian, and my now-husband was instrumental in challenging those bigoted beliefs. I knew this book would stir up some family history for me. It's still weird. #bookofthemonth

WOW. JUST WOW. I'm not sure what else I can say. I read this for the "refugee main character" prompt for #Booked2018 - and it's amazing. Little Bee's voice was enthralling from the very beginning. She talks to the reader like you're there and able to respond, rather than just telling her story to the air. Some scenes are extremely difficult (content warning, rape) but it's worth it. I might need to buy my own copy. #faves2018

Reusing this picture. Went to the B&N book club today and really enjoyed it! Met a few awesome women and had some great discussions. One of the women was from my home state, Oregon, which is crazy because we're in Baltimore! I really enjoyed the book, and I don't read a lot of contemporary fic. It's really only tangentially about feminism, though. The characters are flawed in realistic ways.

Reggie I went to the one at one of the Albuquerque stores and had a great time. I‘m glad you did too. 6y

After thoroughly enjoying Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, I looked up more Rosamund Hodge, because she writes my favorite micro-genre so well! (Fairy-tale and Shakespeare retellings.) Cruel Beauty was another gorgeous, lyrical tale that puts an entirely different spin on Beauty and the Beast. Excited to dig into Crimson Bound (Little Red Riding Hood, I think) next!

Gorgeous cover. Fascinating premise. Terrible execution. Ends on a massive cliffhanger but also didn't make me care enough about it to be mad. Just confused. Skip this one.

TommieMarie74 That‘s disappointing. I had high hopes for this one. 😕 6y
Crystallinegirl @TommieMarie74 Me too! I wanted to like it so bad. The main character is just dumb and makes stupid decisions. Also wonders if he should fall in love with every. single. girl. that he meets. No consideration given to how they feel, of course. The geography felt like it was constantly changing - the city is close! No it's far away! Suddenly he's in an ivy maze! Just frustrating to read. Don't get me started on the "ending" if you can call it that. 6y

So I miiiiiight have made the mistake of going to The Book Thing again. But when the books are free, how do you NOT walk out with a box?! My husband was super excited to spot The Rookie; it's the first book on a series he's been wanting to read for a long time. I found a lot of non-white authors, so I'm excited about that. And what looks like a book on the science of bisexuality, which could either be interesting or really dry. We'll see!

Did you ever read an opening paragraph that made you go "that's a beautiful piece of writing, also, I don't think I'm going to like this book"? This is an amazingly evocative paragraph. But I hate the style of writing! A whole novel of this....well. I'll give it a chapter or two and we'll see.
Edit: nope. Four more pages and bailed. I just can't keep my attention on this. Need slightly less flowery description and a little more substance.

14 hours into my personal #24in48, I've finished three books and I'm starting How the States Got Their Shapes. Enchantress was good. A little slow at times, a little dry, and some events happened out of order (at least according to Wikipedia) but it is historical fiction, so I can give it some leeway.

3 hours into my personal #24in48 and one excellent book down! I'd heard there was a GLBT romance in this one, but there's more than one! Excellent representation in this book, a fascinating world, and a pretty good plot. Happy I finally got around to reading it.

Crystallinegirl @GondorGirl There were definitely a few rough patches; I saw the reveal long before the main character did, and there were a few points where I was very confused about where a character was or how they did what they did, but she's a fairly new author. And the book was good enough otherwise to make up for the few technical mishaps. 6y

I actually bought this puzzle before I read Drowning Deep, but it's pretty fitting to break it out now! DD was awesome - fully lives up to the promise of Rolling in the Deep, the novella that preceded it. Predatory Lovecraft-esque mermaids are fascinating, and I can't wait for a sequel!

Crystallinegirl @Reggie I thought it was a little slow to start; but it just lets the foreboding sense of doom build more and more. Which is part of why it felt very Lovecraftian to me. (and thanks! The puzzle is proving to be very frustrating, lol, because all the colors are so similar!) 6y
