I read a Louise Penny book that takes place much later in the series and then realized that this is a series that needs to be read from the beginning. Although I thought book one was good - I loved book two! Three Pines and its cast of characters really came alive for me. I cannot wait to start the next book.

Another great entry in this series. I found myself not really caring about the murder and just enjoying the characters and seeing how they think. It‘s all described so well. Right down to the flickering fires and cold Quebec weather. I did gasp out loud near the end which doesn‘t happen that often when I am reading!

I just started this series over the long weekend. And I already know that I am going to have to make sure I pace myself and not rush through it. I love Three Pines. The first two books are getting me into a Fall/Christmas/Winter mindset!

Melissa_J Your book holder looks so cute! 2mo
ReadingMeagan @Melissa_J Thank you! It‘s from a woman I follow on Instagram and who is a part of the Modern Mrs Darcy Book Club 😊 2mo
Laura317 You definitely need to pace yourself. I‘m about half way through the series, and will allow myself to read one every 3-4 months. The fact that Penny is still writing this series makes me giddy with relief. I will dread the day she ends it. 2mo

Ill probably read a few chapters before bed.

First day of #BFC2 was off to a slow start

BarbaraJean Might be a slow start, but what‘s important is that you started, right?! 👏🏼 And I think in round one @wanderinglynn confirmed that any books finished during the challenge count towards your goal. I‘m counting the book I finished today even though a lot of it was read before the challenge. (I read most of it during round one of BFC!) 5mo

What a wonderful little series this is. I‘m enjoying getting to know the residents of Three Pines and the Surete. Im not sure that i like this book as much as the first one, but i think Penny has a brilliant way of weaving together several stories without revealing too much about any of them until the time is right.

This #audiobook is a nice continuation of the Three Pines series. Inspector Gamache is beginning to grow on me. Nice dialogue and insightful character descriptions, with the exception of the description of a large young girl, which was often cringe-worthy.

I flew through the second book in Penny‘s series. I switched between listening to the audio and reading the paperback from the library. I am enjoying the characters and the wold that Penny is building, but I knew the identity of the killer from the start. I will continue reading the series since everyone keeps telling me that the books get better, especially after book four.

As much as I enjoyed the audio, reading on the page is def the way for me to go for fiction. I just felt & lives this story so much more. Of course Gamache is the Inspector I‘d want on the case. He is just so quietly emotive. & when can I move to 3 Pines? Is there another place, aside from the seemingly high murder rate & the cold weather, that is such a perfect place to live? I‘m so ready for more of this series 💜

Louise Penny does it again. Wow. Her writing is so brilliant and keeps your interest throughout. The characters within the village of Three Pines are all suspects and you spend the entire book trying to figure out the perpetrator. It‘s full of mystery and turns you wouldn‘t expect and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series! Onto the next!

When reading I love to feel like I'm THERE- seeing and experiencing as the plot unfolds- and this author definitely makes me feel that. I enjoyed revisiting this town and these characters and plan to read the next one soon. However I'm worried about all the signs we're seeing of a conspiracy against Gamache, esp as a good friend of his seems to be part of it, and I don't know if I'll be able to continue watching as people set him up for a fall.

Bailedbailed

This is the first time I have ever bailed on a book club book.

And I'm irritated for doing it. I'm also frustrated that I feel irritated. Because I don't owe this book, this author, or even my book club my mental health.

The language the narrative of this book uses to describe fat people, especially a child is awful. It is dehumanizing, and I'm not about to spend another 8 hours listening to language I've heard since I was in middle school.

I‘ve figured out what I love in this series. It‘s not the whodunnit, the action, nor any of the other stuff I like in other mystery series; it‘s the humanity. The ways Gamache sees people & also what he misses. The contrasts & connections between, & a sad sweetness I‘ve not often found in this genre. These mysteries & stories engage & move me to tears in the best ways. The Graces & the cracks that never heal made this story a beautiful thing 😭

Lcsmcat I totally agree! There‘s a lot of goodness in these books. ❤️ 11mo

I read the first book of this series and wasn‘t a huge fan. So....should I continue? I have so many people recommending the Gamache books to me, but I‘m on the fence.

Librarybelle There is more character development as the series unfolds. I love the series, so I may be a bit biased... 12mo
emtobiasz Depends on what you didn‘t like. Gamache stays more or less as he presents in the first novel, although you learn much more about him. But the secondary characters of Three Pines deepen and become less character types/stereotypes and more fleshed out people as the books go on. 12mo
Karkar I did not like the first one either. My friend who recommended them says they get better! 12mo
See All 6 Comments
Caroline2 The first book is a bit weak, it honestly gets so much better! Two is ok too but 3 is really good! 12mo
Becker I would echo the above comments. The first book is okay but she continues to develop the characters more and more with each book and you end up becoming very invested in this little village. 12mo
LiteraryinLititz For me, this isn‘t a series where I‘m going to read every single book. I have read maybe 3-4 books in the series but overall they are a bit slow. It‘s more about the charming village and townspeople, I think. 12mo

I love a good mystery series. This only the second one in the series, but I'm hooked!

Kaye Would you recommend this series for someone who‘s not a huge mystery fan ? I guess I‘m wondering if there‘s more “ meat “ to the book than just a mystery like , say, Agatha Christie? Reason being, I heard them ask Hillary Clinton once what sort of books she liked and she named this author as one of her favorites. I saw the first in the series yesterday at the used bookstore and actually had it in my hand but put it back. (edited) 1y
kimgnix It does have more depth to the characters than a traditional cozy mystery. I think you should give it a try! Maybe check it out from the library so you don't have anything to lose. 1y
