Winter Street
Winter Street | Elin Hilderbrand
In bestseller Elin Hilderbrand's first Christmas novel, a family gathers on Nantucket for a holiday filled with surprises. Kelley Quinn is the owner of Nantucket's Winter Street Inn and the proud father of four, all of them grown and living in varying states of disarray. Patrick, the eldest, is a hedge fund manager with a guilty conscience. Kevin, a bartender, is secretly sleeping with a French housekeeper named Isabelle. Ava, a school teacher, is finally dating the perfect guy but can't get him to commit. And Bart, the youngest and only child of Kelley's second marriage to Mitzi, has recently shocked everyone by joining the Marines. As Christmas approaches, Kelley is looking forward to getting the family together for some quality time at the inn. But when he walks in on Mitzi kissing Santa Claus (or the guy who's playing Santa at the inn's annual party), utter chaos descends. With the three older children each reeling in their own dramas and Bart unreachable in Afghanistan, it might be up to Kelley's ex-wife, nightly news anchor Margaret Quinn, to save Christmas at the Winter Street Inn. Before the mulled cider is gone, the delightfully dysfunctional Quinn family will survive a love triangle, an unplanned pregnancy, a federal crime, a small house fire, many shots of whiskey, and endless rounds of Christmas caroling, in this heart-warming novel about coming home for the holidays.

In this book, we are introduced to the dysfunctional Quinn family. This was a quick, enjoyable #holidayread A lot of my holiday reads have been completely unrealistic, often loaded with eye roll inducing dialogue. This one wasn‘t bad at all, and it was still full of all of the family drama you would expect in a light read at this time of year. I‘ll likely be continuing the series next holiday season.

I finished the first two books in this series and I really enjoyed them. They are perfect for me this season with just the right amount of drama, humor, dysfunction and Christmas. Starting Winter Storms #3 today.

I‘ve been reading this series every Christmas for the past 3 years. This time I decided to try the audiobook. I love this book but was not a huge fan of the narrator. Still, it wouldn‘t be Christmas without the dysfunctional Quinn family. 5⭐️

This was a quick, fun read. Family disfunction, problems and worries, and a household in holiday chaos set the scene . But family coming together for Christmas, and love ultimately win out. A good Christmasy read.

During the holidays, I particularly enjoy, feel good, light-hearted books revolving around characters and/or families who deal with some sort of dilemma - ultimately finding themselves coming together during the festive season. I also love when seasonal books take place in beautiful locations - this book takes place on Nantucket at a beautiful inn called, Winter Street Inn, (could that be any more of a perfect setting for a Christmas book!).

Apparently my library is no longer using Libby or Overdrive starting December 1st. 😭These are the 4 audiobooks that I currently have downloaded, 3 of which were for the #WinterGames. Hoping to get through them before the app locks. Maybe since they‘re already downloaded, I‘ll still have access to them for the full two weeks? Here‘s to hoping!🤞🏻🤞🏻

JenniferP What?? What are they switching to? Those are the two I‘m familiar with. 3mo
ljuliel Wow, that‘s a first ! I hope they don‘t all start doing this. If you want to make sure you get to complete the books, there‘s an app called mp 3 audiobook player ( the orange one is free) , the same one called pro is a couple bucks. You download the books through Overdrive , then you can move them to the app and play them that way. Return the books to the library and you can still listen to them through the app. (edited) 3mo
Crazeedi Whaaaatttt???? How can they do that? What are they using to give patrons ebooks to borrow?? 3mo
See All 18 Comments
Slajaunie Mine uses an app called Cloud Library. (edited) 3mo
Letora Oh no, are they replacing the apps? 3mo
jillrhudy Probably didn‘t want to cut the print budget. You wouldn‘t believe what publishers are charging libraries for ebooks if I told you, and now MacMillan/Tor is embargoing libraries and reducing availability to one copy per system. (edited) 3mo
Clwojick @JenniferP @Crazeedi @Slajaunie @Letora The library is switching to CloudLibrary, but the app seems to crash lots. The audiobook pauses after almost every chapter, and I have to reopen it and find my location again. I‘m also not a fan that the speed only goes to 2x. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was sad when they got rid of Hoopla, and not Libby too. 3mo
4thhouseontheleft Oh no! Although it‘s ridiculous what publishers charge for library ebooks. And the whole Macmillan thing isn‘t helping. 3mo
marleed Oh shoot! I read 2:1 - Overdrive:my physical collection. Much of my logic is out of fear Overdrive will evaporate and I won‘t have this vast library available to me. I am currently boycotting the purchase of any newly produced Macmillan books for their anti-coordination of public libraries. 3mo
Clwojick @ljuliel I‘ll have to give that a go! Thank you ♥️ 3mo
marleed Oh Cassandra here‘s a thought... i was so sad when my San Antonio Library card expired because of their premiere elib. My current library is subpar from an elib experience. But I library hopped! I found out i could reciprocate with other Libraries. So a hop and then another hop and I found a library nearly equal to SA which issued me a 2-yr card. Maybe that‘s an option for you. 3mo
Slajaunie They just need to work the kinks out. Mine works fine. 3mo
Crazeedi @jillrhudy I heard that about McMillan and I knew the ebooks are outrageous 3mo
hes7 Aw, that‘s such a bummer! 😢 Good luck! 3mo
Allylu Is the sign-up for #wintergames over? How do I join if it isn‘t? 3mo
StayCurious @Allylu Hi! I‘ll add you to my team #ReadNosedReindeer! Email me at lebretonr87@gmail.com and I‘ll get you started😊 3mo
StayCurious @clwojick I hope the Ottawa library doesn‘t get rid of Libby. I wonder if that‘s because of budget cuts for libraries in Ontario? 3mo

This was a quick, sweet little read. Not really my cup of tea but it was a nice “palate cleanser” I suppose. Some of the characters I just wanted to reach in & slap them for being so obnoxious, but other than that, I enjoyed the change of pace. I think I‘ll listen to an audiobook next, I‘m still so tired my eyes are stinging! #24B4Monday #readathon

#BookMail Pt1 In other bookish mail from the last week is this “chick lit” novel. The first in a series, it‘s about a family in Nantucket that run The Winter Street Inn. When the whole family gathers for Xmas, things don‘t run as smoothly as expected. Lots of drama, tears & a bit of romance. Perfect for a light upbeat read. I‘m not usually a fan of this genre, but I‘ve always had a thing for islands & Xmas.

Such fabulous holiday reads, without being sticky-sweet. I read the entire 4-book series this week and it was perfect for the busyness of the holidays. Nothing you couldn‘t put down and easily come back to later, but so good that you wish the party ended just a bit sooner. (I‘ve already returned book 1 (Winter Street) to the library.

“Kelley misses Mitzi; that hurt is fresh and new, like a bad toothache. But he misses Margaret, too, differently, in an older way, like a bone that has broken and never been set properly.”

THE QUINN FAMILY! I love everything about them. Yesterday all I could think about, in between all of the wonderful Christmas things, was getting back to their story. I reread this series every year, so they‘re all like old friends. Elin Hilderbrand is THE BEST.

Winter Street is book 1 of 4 that focuses on the Quinn family. The father owns the Winter Street Inn in Nantucket, and this book centers around this and gets us introduced to the family. They are all a hot mess, but I say that in a loving way as they are a family that I would love to be a part of, because through it all they truly love each other, despite their flaws. This book is short but was satisfying. Highly recommend for holiday reading.

Each of the Quinn's work their way into your heart quickly and I found myself flying through the pages of this one. What endeared me most about the Quinn's is their ability to see past each other's mistakes and to just love each other despite any wrongdoings or misgivings they may have - unconditional love at its finest. I can‘t wait to continue!

I mostly liked this book except for Ava; she‘s clingy and needy and babyish — calling her mother “Mommy” in a whiny teenage voice even though she‘s an adult, close to if not past 30. The rest of the characters make dumb decisions too, but they aren‘t nearly as annoying as Ava.
