The Book of Life | Deborah Harkness
"After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness's enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew's ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches--with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy's final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago"--

This is the 3rd of the All Souls Trilogy which honestly I struggled to complete. The whole thing is boggy. Descriptions can run on and on. The vampires aren't very scary and the main character is way overpowered. And the entire premise of the story conflict - keeping creatures secret from humans - gets blown up in an unbelievable way where all the humans are totally fine with all the creatures in their midst.

jessjess The book before this one, Shadow of Night, was my #bookspin for April. 1mo

Bk2 of January 2022 & #JumpStart2022 is done. I was having trouble settling on a next read so decided to reread the last in the All Souls trilogy in prep for the new season of the TV series on Saturday. I love this cover so much, these editions are gorgeous with a main location on the spine & front of each book(Oxford,Elizabethan London & Venice I believe)While it was a bit disjointed, I still enjoyed the wrap up of the story arc. #BookspinBingo👇

This books was SOO slow. And frustrating. And annoying. I can say without a doubt, I will never revisit this series again. But I am glad to have some semblance of a resolution.

And thank god for Gallowglass. He‘s the only character I could tolerate by the end.

I finally finished. It felt like it took forever to read this. The beginning seemed like it dragged and dragged, but the action toward the last part of the book sped things up. While I liked it, I didn‘t love it. Gallowglass was probably my favorite character. I also really ended up liking Ysabeau. Recommended if you liked the first two books in the series.

This time I remembered to turn on my #audiobook. Another hour down on the tagged book. It‘s okay, but it‘s a little slower paced than I‘d prefer.

Still reading for the #NovelNovember #readathon. I forgot to track my hours for most of the week, but I‘d guess I‘m only around 10-12 hours anyway, since it‘s been a slow reading week. It doesn‘t look like I‘ll meet my readathon goals, but that won‘t stop me from giving it a go! :)

The number of times Matthew runs his hands through his hair in this book is becoming increasingly annoying.

ravenlee When I read Cinder I was distracted by Kai constantly flipping his bangs. Why do authors fixate on something like this? 6mo
megnews @ravenlee and why doesn‘t a good editor notice? 6mo
BarbaraJean Ugh, these kinds of things are such a pet peeve. @ravenlee @megnews My questions exactly!! When I read the Wheel of Time series, I was so annoyed at one character repeatedly tugging her braid. And don‘t get me started on the number of times a female character was described as crossing her arms “underneath her breasts.” 🙄 6mo
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraBB You made me laugh out loud in a situation where I wasn‘t really allowed to at work 🤪 6mo
4thhouseontheleft @ravenlee @megnews @BarbaraJean Glad I‘m not the only one bothered by things like this! I also wonder how editors don‘t pick up on this. Although this whole book needs major editing. 185 pages in and NOTHING is happening. And character development has been missing too. Only finishing this because it is the last one in the trilogy. 6mo
ravenlee I think editors/editorial staff don‘t read books like reader-consumers do, and they don‘t have quite the same experience. Without sitting down and reading a book straight through, maybe these repetitions don‘t stick out so much, especially if the editor has read several versions. I bet that, after all the rewrites, some editors don‘t read the entire finished book again. Hopefully most do, but I‘m skeptical. 6mo
julesG @ravenlee I agree. I often think the editor read and worked on the first two chapters, two chapters in the middle and, sometimes, two at the end. 6mo
julesG Book 3 is awful. So many things do not happen. It was disappointing. A friend, who read the German translation, asked me whether I could give her a recap of book 3,so she could splurge on a different book. 😈 6mo
BethM If you‘re not enjoying this one definitely skip Time‘s Convert. 6mo
The_Penniless_Author @BarbaraJean Was wondering if someone would bring up Wheel of Time. The braid tugging is definitely my biggest pet peeve, although "skirt smoothing" isn't far behind ? 6mo

I know it‘s late, but I completely spaced on this, so I‘m posting it now! 🤣

What made me smile is that I completed my first art journal. I mean, I‘ve started and abandoned them so many times, but this one is completed. I‘m really proud of myself. I also made the next one (used the sewing machine to create it and everything), and I‘ve begun work on that.

When the author talks down to me and/or explains what I know from earlier in the book.

It was easy to get lost in the world within these pages. I loved the plot, and I loved all the bookish things. I found the story intriguing. My favorite characters weren't actually the leads which is interesting. It was also a story about racism. (Not sure that is the right word, but species purity was a major plot point.) I loved the world building with the witches magic. I wish there had been more about the daemons. It was a great adventure.

Well by far these best of the series... I guess it was worth reading on after the first book! I hate to say it but the time apart the main characters had really enhanced the book and the series. It spent more time focusing on Diana‘s magic and the histories that the other books always kinda hinted at that. With that said has anyone read the two books after this one? I always like to finish a series but this reviews seem a bit meh... Thoughts?

Vansa Definitely finish the series! I absolutely loved Time's Convert, I think Deborah Harkness has a great talent in weaving in historical events with paranormal romance. 1y

It took me all week, but I finally finished this audiobook. This has been as disappointing reread via audiobook of this series. I loved the trilogy 6 years ago. I didn‘t enjoy the books this time. I guess different world, different me, and this series just didn‘t work for me now. 😔

Patchshank I read the first book a few years ago. I didn't mind it, but I felt like it's intended for a younger audience. I think if I had read it as a teenager instead of in my late 20's I would have really liked it. 1y
MsMelissa I don‘t reread as a general rule, although I make a few exceptions, mainly because I don‘t want to be disappointed that a book I once loved no longer works for me. 1y

My re-read of the trilogy has ended. Now I'm just waiting for my hold to come in on the 4th book.

This one wraps things up nicely, and although I think the action is a bit rushed, I still enjoyed it as much as the first time I read it. Secrets are revealed, some characters are lost, new friends are made, and the magic takes center stage instead of the romance for once. 😉

I‘m glad to know that my library has 2 more books about the All Souls world because I want to know more about some of the characters, esp the twins as adults. I‘ll definitely be reading Marcus & Phoebe‘s story soon. I enjoyed spending time with all the characters, & there are a few badass moments. Still the same slow pacing & subplots as the first 2. A good conclusion. I hope she writes more about this family. 👇

Angeles @Scochrane26 If you can borrow the audiobook free from your library I recommend you try listening as well. I got the physical book as well but I love the audio. I don‘t want to watch the Tv show because I fear I have a picture in my mind of what Diana looks like and a real life actress just can‘t compete. Enjoy! The first reading is the best! 2y

Fantastic ending to the All Souls trilogy.
When Matthew's estranged son pops up, causing all sorts of damage, the de Claremont-Bishop clan searches out allies while attempting to take on the one organization that has kept Creatures and Humans separate for centuries. Diana takes on new roles as mother and Madame of the clan while Matthew finally learns to let others shoulder some of his burdens.

I just got a nasty message on Facebook by a “Gatekeeper”, telling me I‘m not a true fan of Deborah Harkness if I don‘t know that she plans to write more novels in the All Souls cannon, and if I don‘t do research before inserting myself into posts I will be removed from the group. After my reread, I hate Matthew. A lot. With my entire being. In fact, I hate 90% of the characters in this book! I think I can list off, on my two hands, how many of them I like, and those DON‘T include the main characters. The storyline dragged. I‘ve read books that mix history, science, and fantasy so much better than this! Even the first book did it better! Anyway. So-so, because it wrapped everything up, although a lot like Eragon where it...
